The issue I have with Carey is, for a centre attacking midfielder he really isn’t very creative. He doesn’t impose himself or is influential in a game for the forwards to thrive as he is to busy always looking to drive and have a shot.
He’s an NJ 10 and an upgrade Berry. Both work hard and have a good shot. Decent on the ball but neither are playmakers who add creative passing and flair.

Carey is quicker and more agile, he can drive forward with the ball, something Berry didn’t offer in L1, never mind at this level.

Knibbs is in a similar mould, known for his goalscoring and work rate at Reading.

Hopefully Fullah comes back into the squad, he’s the closest we have to a more technical 10, and on top of that he adds pace to the team. NJs said himself once Fullah goes into the team he probably doesn’t come back out. I get the feeling he doesn’t want to be forced to leave Knibbs or Berry out from the squad for an 18 year old, but sooner than later he’s going to have to.
I’d say Carey is more of an 8. A 10 is the creative player we don’t have. I’ve no concerns with Carey. We’ve seen he can do it previously, he’ll do it again. It’s not like the team have been performing around him either. Wouldn’t mind seeing him and JRC together.
NJ uses him as a 10 though, and Knibbs and Berry have similar qualities in that they’re hard workers over traditional playmaking 10s who offer flair and creativity but are weaker defensively.

Only way NJ uses a more typical 10 is if they have that work rate and aggression. There won’t be many players who offer both at this level.
Jones does try to use him as a 10, but that’s clearly not what he is.

It’s worked hasn’t it? He’s been an improvement on Berry, Gilbert and anyone else who’s played there under Jones.

His best performances have been as a 10 and his worst have been as an 8 with Knibbs as a 10. Surely that tells you his best position in this system is at 10?

They also coincide with Kelman being on the pitch, he fills the space Kelman leaves.

He's had a deserved rest but needs to come back in instead of Berry. Always feel that Berry is more effective as a sub.

We love to complain when they're poor, so it's worth mentioning just how good his set pieces have been over the past few games: low trajectory, angled, and accurate.
  • He's been good defensively in the last two games too
  • He's started to put in some wicked in-swinging corners recently, almost Declan Rice quality.

Both things commented on above show a great work ethic. Set pieces are all about practice and NJ has publicly questioned his defensive abilities and he's responded with graft. That's a proper Charlton player

His delivery is so good should have been 2 nil up from them

Thought he had a good game tonight his deliveries as said above where quality and there was a moment in the first half he ran at them but for our strikers to just stand statically not giving him any options I do feel sometimes it's a thankless task at times when there is a lack of pace up top not saying they didn't work hard just an observation.

When he’s good, he is very very good and when he is bad, he is rubbish.

He seems to like alternating between good and bad performances so hopefully due a stormer on Saturday.

That was genuinely one of the worst performances a player has put in for us all season. He's still in credit but my word

And I still didn't want Berry to come on for him.
  • We need proper competition for Carey next season - basically undroppable as he is our biggest goal threat and the alternative is Berry.

Carey was crap but so was 7/8 other players on that pitch today he’s the last person we should be going for would be down if it wasn’t for him

Won't pretend I'm his biggest fan but it's no surprise that Carey's best form was before Knibbs got injured

That's not how it works, if you're shit, you're shit and previous performances shouldn't cloud that, nor give him a free pass to be shit

Was he any worse than anyone else, he had our only other shot on goal, he is our only player who looks to attack.

My only real criticism of Carey is that I wish he’d just get his head up more and have a look sometimes. He is far from our problem right now though.

I mean Jones said it himself after Saturday, you cant fault him for the goals he's scored this season, but he really needs to work on his assists

Ideally wish we were a few points better off then you could potentially throw Fullah into the team without pressure of having to scrap for every single point

His workrate was better tonight but all in all it was still another selfish performance whenever he got on the ball. There is nothing but Carey, Ball and Goal.
  • I find the criticism of him a bit weird tbh, he’s on about 8 goals from midfield in a team that creates next to nothing.

Yes he can be frustrating at times trying to dribble around too many players but he and TC are about the only ones who can take us up the pitch.

It’s not criticism from me. We know exactly what he is and I’m grateful for the multiple points he’s won us this season.

We are quite reliant on him popping up with something and so when he’s very close to doing it regularly and being that brilliant multi million pound player, it’s frustrating when he puts in a stinker and it feels like he’s part of the problem of the midfield being overrun.

It feels a bit like if Carey is on form we have a chance of winning, if he’s off it we’re lucky to get a point.

The Carey Paradox. Score and he’s a hero, smash it into the defender and he’s a moron.

You’ve got to take the rough with the smooth; players in his position have to take risks, and as frustrating as he can be with some of his decisions we’d be worse without him.
