Quite possibly the strangest game of football I can remember seeing.
The first half was so one-sided we barely got out of our half. But credit Sheff U for that - I thought they looked a cut above and just over-powered and out-classed us. When they went down to 10 men it evened the game up a bit, but they still looked the better team, and it was only when they went down to 9 men that we seemed to have any time on the ball.
Second half I still thought they would break and punish us at some point, for our generally lacklustre performance, but it never came, thankfully.
Take the points and move on. Football is a funny old game.18 -
Survival by whatever means. Yes they were all over us and the architects of their own defeat but if someone told me we'd take 6 points off them and 2 clean sheets I'd have thought they'd been sniffing glue.8

Hopeless around the box, men should always know what to do, once access to the box is granted.2

Jones doesn’t understand that football is supposed to be entertainment for people. He seems to think that when we go to a match we are, like him, going to work. I admire his work ethic but hate his football. As far as he’s concerned he should earn his pay, keep us up, and shut up.llama_child_21cws said:14 -
I wasn’t able to make the game today but sounded like a shocker
But surely we take the 3 bonus points that we wouldn’t have got if they hadn’t have got 2 players sent off and move on, these games happen
We will obviously lose at Millwall and Leicester will be tough so let’s get a result of some sort on Tuesday and battle on, home results are key for us2 -
Because teams can play well and lose, and badly and win.superclive98 said:Only Charlton fans can complain about how we won, when we're in a relegation battle.0 -
Well, it's a fair point, and there are definitely optimists and pessimists. But for me, the worst perspectives comes from those who think they judge players, games and situations by their 'merit', while somehow ending in up the exact same positive or negative stance.Callumcafc said:
Is it not between the realists and the pessimists?Chunes said:Posting without reading. I felt like tonight was probably a night to stay off of CL because of the inevitably obvious car crash between the optimists and the realists. But oh well, let's not pretend this site isn't an addictive dopamine hook that can be avoided.
I thought we were so incredibly lucky to not be 4 - 0 down early on the first half. Kaminski singlehandedly kept us in it. It took two sendings off for us to scrape the win.
It's so weird that we won, and yet it's the first day of the season that I thought to myself... We really could go down. I hadn't thought it was a possibility before today. I genuinely thought we had enough. But now, I'm really not sure.
Pemmists - we won but it wasn’t good enough
Realists - we won, it wasn’t very good but we won and that’s all that matters after the poor run of form
If everything is always positive, or negative, it's not careful analysis, it's just a default stance.
One of the most annoying aspects of this site are the posters who are constantly positive (or negative) about everything, and yet want to pretend like they're basing it on analysis, when it's actually just the way they are.

Total bullshit as per from Wilder, apparently they were all sweetness and light and just a bit mistimed tackles, while we were cynical, nothing unusual from the guy, just a waster imo...fenaddick said:12 -
Anderson, a positive, really?Bailey said:Firstly, who on here had us to do the double over the blades without conceding a goal, no I didn't think so. Playing Bree at left wing back was probably Nathan Jones saying to the board, 'look we need a left wing back', most of their best attacks came down that side and if I were Chris Wilder, I would have pointed out that right footed Bree and Gillesphey were to be got at. If we go to the Den without that position filled, hide behind the sofa. Positives, Kaminski, Lloyd Jones, Anderson, leaburn, Dykes, the return of Matt Godden and three points in this three game run. Negatives, vacancy in the left wing back position, no Bell or Edwards. You might think we didn't deserve it but at the end of the season, we will look back and thank our lucky stars for Sheff Utd taking Chris Wilders instructions too literally.4 -

The first 35 minutes we were saved by our goalkeeper and the woodwork and I never thought we would get three points.
after that animal was sent off for that atrocious foul on Knibbs I thought the tide could change
and when they went to nine men I knew we could win the game.
it was not pretty but the substitutes did well and we should have scored at least two goals.
three good points today 👍👍👍👍2 -
No reason to think not. Awful second half at Blackburn and really bad again today.panther10 said:I just pray we dont play like that at millwall next week1 -
I was expecting the worst when my name came up on the memorial screen before the game. Sorry guys, I am still here.
I continued expecting the worst for the first 30 minutes, when we hardly got into their half and but for Kaminsky (definite number one - sorry to those advocating Mannion).
As for the second half, not quite expecting the worst but never particularly confident. So many tactics I just didn't understand. A break was always on the cards with a mere one goal lead. We really miss a midfielder that can put his foot on the ball and pick an attacking pass. And why not leave a man forward for corners and long throws when you have a man advantage. They lose a man as well when you do that and the odds are slightly more in the defence's favour with 9 against 7 than 10 against 8.
A win is a win it didn't feel like a good win.6 -
We've been fucking awful to watch for weeks to be fair. I think the last performance that was actually decent on the eye was probably the second half at Ipswich, maybe the second half at Birmingham. It's how we're set up, to win ugly. Today was just a really really bad version of that

I have never walked out of a ground having won feeling so despondent / annoyed.
the first half is up there in the list of most appalling displays I’ve seen in 45 years. Thank god for Kaminski.
With a two man advantage in the second half I still saw their attacking threat greater than ours.
The one good thing was game management and possession across the back, because on the few occasions we tried a penetrating pass it failed.
Dykes - promising
Campbell - energy and commitment
Kaminski - thank you
Everything else… see you next Tuesday.

Self explanatory.
The assault is made worse due to being aerial - dangerous tackle in rugby.6 -

Today showed why we struggled to beat Norwich, Portsmouth and Blackburn.
It’s understandable that some fans feel a bit deflated, but cheer up, we won a genuinely must win game!4 -
So much negativity- a year ago we were losing to Crawley at home now doing the double on recent Prem side …10

He's OTT on TC but so are you. He terrorised them with his first touch when he went past his man and won a corner, but then he spent the next 30 mins putting in awful crosses and wasting good field position. He did then have a great run at the death to wind the clock down.superclive98 said:

Massive clown.RonnieMoore said:First half Sheff Utd started as expected front foot , full of confidence the good thing was we stayed in the game .. i do question NJ team selection in midfield and that caused us issues the whole game .. Anderson ?? the only reason we were in the game at HT was Kaminski… two or three excellent saves and was clear MOM … then the sending offs and the changes …. Don’t think NJ done enough at ht we should have stretched the play but didn’t .. good goalfrom Carey after knock down from Dykes .. but then we got it wrong , don’t get me wrong Sheff Utd never looked like scoring second half but we didn’t go for the kill .. we did not keep procession well enough especially at the back , the crowd did not help and when played the ball forward Sheff Utd coped well which is what they wanted .. Campbell had no one marking him at all and he had so much space and time yet again failed to deliver a killer cross he was poor .. why oh why Apter not playing .. .. we huffed and puffed but it got a little nervous cause it was a massive result .. at the end of the day it was massive 3 points against a team who were in top form .. does not matter how you get it , performance it’s about winning and we did .. we seen it thousands of times that sending offs effects the other team more … but today I think NJ got it badly wrong both in starting line up and at ht with the subs and his game management through the second halfIf anyone other than the OP had written that, you wouldn’t have said that. There have been countless other posters saying similar on this thread.
Ronnie says some bizarre stuff sometimes but that’s a blend and mix of opinions from every other post on here. Don’t see the problem with it
How he can berate TC after that performance is beyond me. He terrorised them and changed the game.

Well at least Wilder has given us a good laugh by saying he will appeal the second red. Look we are all biased, especially managers, but when you state things like that you make a fool of yourself.Raith_C_Chattonell said:

If ever a game was tailor-made for Luke Berry’s craft and ability to play "between the lines," it was the moment the opposition went down to nine men. While three points are three points, the logic was flawed: slowing the tempo and launching crosses into the box was opposite of what we should have been doing. At one point I am pretty sure TC headed to the corner flag to wind the clock down. Mental when you think about it.

Then (not being personal), I honestly can’t believe anyone present who sat through that hasn’t got serious concerns at the direction our play and confidence is going in, or highlight the fans as being negative as a key takeaway.superclive98 said:

Out of interest, were you there @superclive98 ?superclive98 said:Only Charlton fans can complain about how we won, when we're in a relegation battle.Given the circumstance, I thought the fans were great. If Jones or anyone thinks a crowd of football fans isn’t going to voice some frustration when they are playing so badly and negatively during a bad run, then they are in cloud cuckoo land. I’d rather highlight that despite what was on offer, the fans continued to sing Nathan Jones red and white army throughout. At the end of the game, the team felt embarrassed to celebrate and there were no fist pumps. The manager scarpered quickly. Our goal keeper was man of the match in a game we played against 9 men for more than half of it. The away team got a standing ovation from their fans.It was awful. Everyone is hugely thankful for the three points, particularly given other results, but we’ll see in the next few games whether the double sending off was just the bit of fortune we’ve been needing, or a very temporary papering over the cracks.29 -
We were very poor the first 35 minutes, there was only one team playing and one team trying to survive. Got given a life line that ultimately proved one thing, we lack any creativity. The system Jones uses is based on defensive hard work and nicking a goal in “moments” but it only works when he has his “A team”.Positives: Dykes was actually a handful, and Clarke for someone who hasn’t played much football looked alright and will only improve with game time.We need a few signings this window but not league one stars we need championship experienced players that aren’t made of glass.2

Because at 2-0 against 9 men even we can't fuck that up.superclive98 said:Couldn't understand people screaming for us to get forward faster in the last 10/15 minutes. Did they not realise that Sheff Utd couldn't score without the ball?
The only way we weren't going to win the game was to needlessly give the ball away and allow them to counter-attack us.
The only thing that mattered was getting 3 points from a game where we should have been 3 or 4 down after 30 minutes.
Can you trust this lot to hold onto the ball and not concede? We were doing our level best to gift them opportunities even with them basically holding station in the second half13 -
I'm pretty certain that before the reds, we didn't have a shred of decent possession within 30 yards of their goal, let alone have a wayward shot or create a chance. Even after the reds, we didn't have a shot in the first half did we?
Did Anderson push their bloke in back for a potential penalty in the first half too? I sit in the other half but it looked an iffy contact to me.6 -

You make your own luck. Our epic start saw us accumulate enough points to have a buffer to cushion our recent poor form.Simonsen said:

Poor perfomance but a great result and it's results not performances that count.
Was never gonna be pretty this year and we're a league one squad that just needs to punch above another 3 sides to see it out no matter how ugly.
Jones and the boys are doing at great job as evidenced by the league position which I'd have bitten your hand off for in August.
Keep the faith. We're doing far far better than I hoped/ expected at start of the season.16
