Similar to one of Mendonca’s goals at Wembley.

I reckon Carey tried to control it and it jumped up. He had the awareness to pick it up again quickly and finish superbly, but the pessimist in me thinks he probably didn’t mean to knock it over the defender.

I really don’t want to detract from what is technically a brilliant finish, but if he meant that it’s Messi levels of brilliance I reckon

I've watched this so many times and I actually think he meant it and knew exactly what he was doing. He lifts his right foot to give the ball height instead of trying to pump it past the keeper on the first touch, the volley's then saved for his left which he pelts past the keeper

If it was slower then we'd be talking about it more, but I honestly think it's one of the best goals we've seen from a lad in a Charlton shirt.

  • He absolutely doesn’t mean the flick I think, but shows great awareness to know where it’s going to come down and finish it like that
  • Thought the wing backs were terrific, both offensively and defensively.  Great to see targeted crosses swung into the box rather than some of the more aimless ones we have seen earlier in the season.

I really hope Leaburn is not badly injured as he would thrive on some of that service and start to score more regularly imo which would improve us, but also improve his price tag when he does move on.
Having Bell back is such a huge upgrade for us.  We really need him fit for much of the run in.
Tactics seemed on point today and we started aggressively which was good to see.

In the flip side, the second half performance (first 20 or so), was surprisingly poor and old habits of our entire team dropping to the 6 yard box leaving acres of space on the edge of our box (against 10men) was not good and happened a handful of times.  We got lucky a bit in that spell, not least with the penalty.
I thought our crowd were excellent from way before the game kicked off, songs in support of NJ so early after last weekend was a good thing.

Finally, I have never visited the City of Leicester before. It was surprisingly nice and not at all as I had imagined.  I will go back.

But what's up with their fans?  I know they are on a poor run but it seems a bit billy big bollox the talk of protests and disgust they have got for their owner - the same family who got them to be PL and FA Cup winners.  Did they think that was going to last?  Mental if so.

A win of huge importance, lifting us 6 points clear of Blackburn and the drop zone and 8 clear of Oxford. WBA are in free fall with a rookie manager and once Leicester’s points deduction is applied, they could well find themselves in the bottom three. Should that occur, I’m not sure they’ll have the stomach to fight their way out of it on the evidence of yesterday. In Fatawu, they probably have the best winger in the division but the team and the home crowd looked demoralised from the outset.

For us, the result was critical but it was also a really encouraging performance after our recent travails. That first half was as good as I’ve seen from us for a while. The team had real balance with Clarke and Chambers as wing-backs, the remodelled midfield was solid and aggressive and we gave Leicester a torrid time up front, with Leaburn a man on a mission.

We had a sticky first 20 minutes in the second half and began to sit deeper but once Ayew hit the post with the penalty, it was effectively game over. Nathan got his substitutes spot on, with Godden very impressive up top, TC stretching the opposition on the left and Coventry wrestling back control of the game in midfield. Our game management was very good and we saw the match out comfortably.

There were good performances all over the park, with a particular shout out for the young wing-back, Luke Chambers. He looked a class act and his cross for the second goal was sublime. The other new signings all played well and it was great for Matty Godden to get 45 minutes under his belt.

The result sets us up beautifully for the 3 consecutive home games coming up in the next two and a half weeks. The only negatives from yesterday were the injuries to Lloyd Jones and Miles Leaburn -  hopefully they are not significant and they’ll be fine for QPR on Friday.

A cracking away day - the sun shone, the trains ran on time and we brought home 3 vital points. We managed a couple of very pleasant pints in the local Wetherspoons, The Corn Exchange, pre-match and a cleansing post-match beer in the King’s Head before hopping on the train. We were back in London for 5 o’clock to start the celebrations in earnest.

Great support for the side today, which I thought really gave the players a demonstrable lift. That was important after last week’s debacle and the result will have totally transformed the mood around the club. There’s still a lot of work to do but 50 points is now well within reach, especially with 10 of our last 17 games at home.

  • The other thing to mention is that Bell came back and we won. If we can keep him fit it’s a huge asset, but realistically we still need better cover on the left side of defence

Absolutely love this stonker on their forum

”2-0 loss to Charlton at home is about as bad as it gets in terms of one off results I am afraid

The performance was an improvement and the sending off was a massive problem I do admit, but then I say again, Charlton, at home, not exactly the most testing fixture on the fixtures list is it, and we have nothing to show for it.”

That’s a fair comment from their perspective. They were at home to a team that last season were two divisions below them, and who came into the game near the bottom of the form table.

To borrow a phrase from Tony Mowbray, they should be beating teams like Charlton.
It might have been a fair comment but the geezer has apparently managed to wipe their home defeat to Oxford a week ago from his memory. That was a loss to a two bob outfit who sat second bottom and well adrift of safety. We may not be any great shakes at this level as yet but we are surely a notch or two up on poxy Oxford United
We also have a 3 0 win at Portman Road on our 2025/26 CV. So our Foxy friend is well wide of the mark.
I think your disparaging remarks about Oxford show precisely the reason why we shouldn't care when other fans make similar comments about us. Lots of people carry ideas in their head about past history somehow giving 'bigger' teams some divine right to win. It's football though, 11v11, and in most divisions any team can beat any other on the day. Indeed, it's precisely that possibility that makes the sport enjoyable. It's therefore not worth getting upset when others do it to us.

Yes, the defensive balance isn't quite right. Too many players dropping into the box, with hardly anyone marking and pressing attacking players on the edge of the box.

Players marking space instead of opponents,  as Brownie often moans about.

Very unlikely that he meant it, but a player will know where a touch, intended or otherwise, is going to land.

    Yea!

It flicks up off his foot, he glances round quickly and catches where the ball is falling and finishes brilliantly.

Two wonderful goals from the Ginger Man and Dick Van Dykes in particular.
    Bravo!
All those saying there was nothing wrong with the first “goal“ are absolutely right. Shocking decision by the assistant referee.  Not the ref’s fault as he can’t see what’s happening.

Simply, we had a proper defence for the first time in months. Our problems have been very straightforward. Three good centre backs and two proper wingbacks fixed it. Now also clear that our midfield is a huge problem with none of them capable of making a decent forward pass, partly why we were on the back foot for a lot of the second half
Four more wins will keep us up
At one point towards the end of the game Docherty picked up the ball just outside our penalty area & strode into acres of space. He kept going and going and going and then gave it away which lead to another Leicester attack. He had time to play it out wide but just didn't know what to do with it.

I really have no idea what you have against me. I made a positive post earlier about how I thought the team did well & then replied to someones post about Dochety.

It's getting to look I little bit like bullying to me, unless I see you pick on the other dozens of posts picking up on something that went on during the match

    Just lay off will you.

Watched it about 20 times and still no nearer knowing if it was deliberate.
    Other unknowns:
    1. is the Leicester fan applauding the quality of the goal or ironically applauding the Leicester team?
    2. If Bernie/Bernice Ecclestone has gone all the way to Leicester to watch Charlton and got in the front row, why can’t they even be arsed to take their hands out of their pockets and celebrate?

His eyes are on the ball every millisecond. It looks intentional to me, especially when viewed at 0.25 speed.

I think us fans sometimes forget that professional footballers aren't just professionals for the label.

Great work, Sonny. All but one of his goals (the other in the Millwall draw) have led to Charlton wins.

♫ We never lose, when Sonny scores ♫
  • Seven goals for Carey now - excellent return.

We need a win against 11 men to prove the tide has turned. The loan signings look promising and there was a bit of quality in some of our football yesterday.

Hopefully the capitulation against Millwall was a blip.

That looked like a goal from a player that’s taken his fitness levels up a notch or two and hadn’t personally realised how much until his body just did it. The next game should be interesting.

I don't know why it is, but whenever someone scores a great goal there are always some miserable buggers trying to spoil the magic by questioning the intent of the goalscorer. Why can't we just enjoy it for what it is rather than always trying to belittle others' achievements?

Will catch up with the posts later today, what a bloody result. Over the moon.

Editing the vlog now, fair warning, fairly hammered in it, and game footage is minimum (caught our second goal and the end of our first)

Thought our away end was really good after the last month or so, chills watching this:

Well done everyone there, great turnout, and I felt a bit of a turning point yesterday with Jones coming over and apologising to the fans etc, very humble of him and feel that could be the boost to get us all reading from the same script again,

Lovely stuff, love this club, happy Sunday :)

Seriously? We are all pleased we won, in many cases pleasantly surprised. There really is no need to suggest most fans genuine concerns based upon an appalling run and some terrible performances are indicative of “bedwetters”. Again we as fans respond rather than lead.

I support Jones and don’t want to see him replaced, however I think he’s does get his formation, line ups and tactics wrong on occasions and it’s perfectly legitimate for us to comment on that. The result today showed promise and a great deal of resilience, however you are foolish to think the season is over because of one game. It’s promising, a very nice surprise and has many positives.
