because we do so much work off the ball, we end up in the situation we found ourselves tonight where QPR looked the likelier to score in the final 20.  All over the pitch you could see the game had caught up with so many.  Coady was very much off the pace.  Chambers was done.  Dykes ran his arse off, and Clarke couldn’t get forward as much in the second half.

I appreciate Coady, Chambers, Clarke and Dykes haven’t seen much football this season for different reasons, but it was the throughout those run of games over December and new year.  Leaburn was often exhausted by the end of it.  I know the way we play is what has got us to where we are now and with safety in our own hands, but we’re getting to the business end of the season now.  Bodies are tiring and the season has taken its toll.  If we just had a couple of players that could actually let the ball do the work it would make such an overall difference.  It’s immaterial as we don’t.

I guess the positive is that because Clarke, Coady, Dykes and Chambers haven’t played much football, you could argue they should be a bit fresher for the final games, but our style really does take it out of the players.

We have to as an absolute minimum beat one of Stoke or Pompey and not lose the other imo, preferably beating Pompey and at least drawing with Stoke.  The challenge with that is facing Stoke first.  Draw or dare I say lose that, Pompey becomes huge

I can definitely see Jones changing it on Wednesday trying to manage those minutes.  TC will come in off Dykes, we might even get Coventry back in for Coady

These next 2 home games are so important.  I just really question what’s in the locker to break them both down and get the win from a quality perspective
They get tired because Jones insist upon giving up possession and chasing the ball.

Chambers brings a level of technical ability that I'm not sure we have anywhere else in the squad. They were desperate to stop him crossing, doubling up every time, and when he got an inch of space he immediately put an outrageous ball in - absolutely criminal no one was at the back stick to head home.

Also insane to get the power and accuracy he did on the free kick shot from that distance
    Criminal!

I went with a Rangers mate, who is a very good judge of a game. He was happy enough with a point and thinks Charlton should be fine regarding staying up. Other Rangers fans echoed this on the train home but also pointed out that we were playing a fairly depleted team.

My mate, also liked Dykes (mainly for his attitude) when he was at Rangers but said he won't attack the 6 yard box for crosses. Chambers put a superb cross over to the far post last night....exactly where you would expect your big striker to be...but Dykes was hovering a bit back from the near post. If Dykes can get himself to the back post more often, Chambers will find him like he did at Leicester.

Listening to Nathan's comments after the game he was clearly not happy about our 3 game changer subs not making an impact so let's hope he tries perhaps Cov, JRC and Fev next because everyone saw how we nearly threw it away. Stoke will be a tough game so we need to go the whole 90+minutes next week and not fade away and invite trouble. Personally I hope Leaburn is back for Stoke.

Just out of interest, were the QPR supporters held back last night after the final whistle?
Don’t think so - all merged as normal in Floyd Road.

But for their 'keeper, we win that.  A clear winner of their MotM.

We are now performing at a different level compared with November and December. Our goal scoring issues remain but I feel more confident that we’ll stay up regardless.

Kaminski, Jones, Bell, Dykes, Carey Chambers, Clarke provide a decent base at this level. Carey didn’t have his best game but I was urging him to shoot each time he did, it was just he didn’t have his shooting boots on. Chambers was targeted a little after his yellow card and perhaps needs to be a little stronger in some physical battles.

The other five places are where there is some debate. Ramsay is a worry for me. On three occasions he headed the ball downwards to one of their players. He also did that that thing where he casually rolls his foot over the ball and lost it leading to a desperate back pass.

The Kelman/Dykes partnership needs some work - I don’t think Kelman anticipated Dykes’ flick ons well enough.

Still, a decent performance and hopefully we will build on it on Wednesday.

No there were plenty of knobheads at the station.....
I thought it got dangerously overcrowded in Floyd Road after the game.

Leaving aside the mouthy teenagers, there might have been justification for keeping the QPR fans back 10 minutes, just to clear the station area a bit, as there was a massive queue for the London bound platform, backing back onto Church Lane.

Thought we looked very decent. Back to our sold selves with balance, Championship experience and grit.
Carey was off target but at least the bloke has a go. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn’t. But it beats the fuck out of the modern style of playing it square and backwards.

Surely it’s only because Carey is willing to have a go that he’s our top scorer with 7 so far. You probably need to miss at least as many as you score.

Biggest miss of the night...Ramsay, how he managed to get that over the bar from 2 yards out is beyond me...🤦‍♂️
  • Playing the away team's theme tune in the build up to kickoff - hmm, let's not do that again.

Know what you mean but they did bring 3,500 punters and filled the JS stand and paid loadsamoney to the club. You remember in the Prem days we used to welcome the away fans and even clapped them! Everybody liked us then. What happened!?

If you ignore the last ten minutes.
  • Meh. A point gained but disappointing we couldn’t keep up the first half pressure. QPR were shite and we just seem to let them off the hook, second half especially.

Staying up is the objective but if we do, we need a whole summer of coming up with a new identity. Another season of 70 yard diagonals and I think I’ll pack it in.
Don't think QPR were shite - we were good 1st half?
As for next year - I worry that N Jones does not have that in his locker? We may upgrade a few more players but just cannot see him wanting or playing a midfield playmaker? Will be more of the same but hopefully better!

Very evenly balanced game. We look more of a threat with Dykes. That and the commitment shown by the team generally may well keep us up. Which is what we'd all be happy with. That's the aim, obviously, but we also need to think hard about strengthening for 2026-2027.

Said before this game a draw against qpr a free hit against stoke and then must beat pompey
I will never get this free hit malarkey. Every game is worth three points. And in this one we are at home. Definitely not a free hit.

I really don't think it's a coincidence that Docherty coming back into the first 11 has resulted in much better performances from those around him. Nor is it a coincidence that when he was subbed off we lost all our organisation /game plan and we looked like a boxer on the ropes.

We've had lots of players just like Doc over the years. I think it's high time he started getting the respect he deserves.
Been saying for weeks. He’s limited in certain areas of his game, but he’s good off the ball, is a leader and we look a better team when he’s in it. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts in this instance.

Why is Stoke a free hit when they are below QPR in the table?

Because people are assuming they’re still challenging at the top of the table without actually bothering to look

Five available changes and he uses three and we spend the last 20 minutes hanging on, unable to move around the pitch. Honestly, Jones has some explaining to do to the Kenyan ambassador.

Spent ages trying to work out the five positions then realised you actually mean 4 as you have named 7 players.
    Agree with your post though.

I’m very late to the thread. Just going to say that it’s once again like the Charlton that tricked me into getting a season ticket as opposed to the post Southampton debacle Charlton (who didn’t exactly make me regret the season ticket but you know what I mean). How to sum up the feeling of “horribly disappointed not to have got 3 points but simultaneously extremely relieved to have got 1”? Oh the gaffer has already done that for me in his post match interview. Hyped for Stoke on Wednesday!

Chambers is rightly getting plaudits for his attacking play but he struggled a bit defensively. Got brushed off the ball and a few loose passes. To be fair, it mainly happened in the second half when he appeared to be tiring.

Especially considering there’s only a position between them and they are only 7 points above us. Fucking mental to say that game is a free hit

We can't afford to see anything as a free hit at this point. Every single point counts, and I'm saying that as someone (relatively) confident we will survive this season - but that's highly dependent on the players treating every game as one to win.

I'm obviously not for a minute thinking we actually will win every time but I don't see Jones going into any game not wanting to get the maximum points by fair means or foul.
