Sri Lanka win with 2 overs to spare. Nice one. Gutting for the Aussies...oh well..

Need Ireland and Sri Lanka to beat Zimbabwe, and then have the best run rate of Zim, Ireland and them, I think. Assuming they beat Oman.bolloxbolder said:Are Australia basically out now?3 -
Australia can't match Sri Lanka for points and Zimbabwe would have to lose to both Ireland and Sri Lanka for NRR to count (assuming Australia beat Oman that is).North Lower Neil said:

Probably not Australia.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
Who is likely to be in our group? Australia, NZ and one other?Addick Addict said:
Two groups of 4 made up of the top 2 from the previous phase. Each team will, therefore, play 3 games and the top 2 from there will make the semis.blackpool72 said:

Sri Lanka were superb and Nissanka was different class in scoring 100 not out in 52 balls.
184-2 and Sri Lanka win by 8 wickets after 18 overs.
3 wins after 3 and SL have qualified.
Australia 1 win and 2 losses look like a struggling team.1 -

For the Super 8 stage, the pre-seedings are:
- Group1: India as X1. Australia X2, West Indies X3, South Africa X4
- Group 2: England as Y1, New Zealand Y2, Pakistan Y3, Sri Lanka Y4

why are we assuming Zimbabwe beat Ireland ?0

It's not just the Ireland game tomorrow though. Zimbabwe also have Sri Lanka and even if they lose that game too then Australia would still have to beat Oman and only then would it come down to net run rate
To put things in perspective, Australia are now eighth favourites and they can be backed at 38 on Betfair to win it1 -
Which will surely happen.Addick Addict said:MrOneLung said:why are we assuming Zimbabwe beat Ireland ?

Indeed but nothing is impossible at present. Too many of the so called "lesser" teams are being underestimated and Australia really aren't very good with so many batters out of form and a bowling attack which is really lacking in depth. Let's not forget that both Cummins and Haslewood were in the originally announced squad. More to the point, Zimbabwe are far from certain to lose to both Ireland and Sri Lanka. And it would still come down to NRR.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

NZ beat Canada by 8 wickets to progress to the Super 8s. Special mention, though, to Canada's 19 year-old opener, Yuvraj Samra, who hit 110 off 65 balls.2

And now another factor has reared its beautiful head. It is raining in Pallekele where the Ireland v Zimbabwe game is due to start in 40 minutes time. Wouldn't it be dreadful if that game was rained off and Australia were to be knocked out as a result!!!Addick Addict said:

Pitch is totally covered.0

Such are the chances of Australia playing perceived to be minimal that their price has drifted from last night's 38 all the way out to 220Addick Addict said:MrOneLung said:why are we assuming Zimbabwe beat Ireland ?

Rained off. Which means both Ireland and Australia are knocked out and Zimbabwe go through.9
-
Can we have a minutes silence for Australia please? OK, how about a nanosecond?8

I still don’t get why Steve Smith wasn’t in their original squad.0

Leask is getting very into this dead rubber game
Don't think anyone has told him they can't qualify. 1 -

The Super 8s Groups are now decided with some five "dead rubbers" (no points are carried forward) still to be played:
Group 1
India
Zimbabwe
West Indies
South Africa
Group 2
England
New Zealand
Pakistan
Sri Lanka
England's games will be as follows (all in Sri Lanka):
Sri Lanka - Sunday 22nd Feb @ 9.30am (Pallekele)
Pakistan - Tuesday 24th Feb @ 1.30pm (Pallekele)
New Zealand - Friday 27th Feb @ 1.30pm (Colombo)

The number 1 ranked T20 batsman in the world, Abhishek Sharma of India, has started this WC with 0, 0 and 0. He has lasted 8 balls in total.0

Despite Zimbabwe being in the other group, I think we have got the slightly easier group there.1
-
The other group does have the two favourites, namely India and South Africa, but it also contains the two outsiders, West Indies and Zimbabwe.MrOneLung said:Despite Zimbabwe being in the other group, I think we have got the slightly easier group there.
Betfair prices:
India - 2.28 (44%)
South Africa - 5.80 (17%)
England - 9.20 (11%)
New Zealand - 10.00 (10.00%)
Pakistan - 13.50 (7%)
Sri Lanka - 16.50 (6%)
West Indies - 19.50 (5.%)
Zimbabwe - 160.00 (1%)0 -
I wouldn't rule out The West Indies. Definitely worth backing them each way at 19.502
-
Might be true but without a monumental adjustment to the attitude and form of most of the top order only Sri Lanka look vulnerable to this piss weak careless poorly lead rabble. The batting's been marginal but the absolute inability to restrict the opposition's run scoring will make victories so very unlikely. If Adil Rashid is 1% off his top game, there is no more generous buffet in international cricket. A couple of spicy balls from Jofra does not a credible attack make.MrOneLung said:Despite Zimbabwe being in the other group, I think we have got the slightly easier group there.1 -
Mad how we are third favourites but I guess that's how the betting market works and I would of thought our recent series against Sri Lanka has effected that.
If we play how we should we shouldn't be scared of any of those three but will we is the question..0 -
This format is pure crap isn't it2
-
At the very least they should carry points forward, then some of the games post knowing who is in the Super 8s would carry some importance. The West Indies, as things stand, could win six of their first seven matches and not make the semis whereas Zimbabwe could go through with just four wins.Leuth said:This format is pure crap isn't it0 -
Having groups of 5 complicated things, but it's silly that England finished their 4 games when several other teams still had 2 games to go.
