Michail Antonio (not) set to sign (pg 21)

Antonio was a player who relied a lot on his physicality, I just cannot see how he will be anywhere near the sort of fitness levels needed at this level having been inactive for 14 months and rising 36 years of age.
I would imagine the issue is that we are only offering him a very low basic wage and he is trying to push for extra cash.2 -
Not sure how true but i found this online:Gribbo said:
Jokes aside - this could very well be the reason. Do we know if he's even back driving yet?valleynick66 said:
Well he doesn’t want a difficult drive to work does he 😉😀Valley11 said:
Looking at housing for a multi millionaire who has played the last 10 years down the road at West Ham?stjohnshill said:Latest update - “no idea what’s going on. It’s a very strange one”. The club were looking at housing for him a few days ago next minute he’s in Qatari I don’t blame him for chasing a final pay day tbh if he does end up there
Eh?
"Following his recovery, he confirmed he is no longer driving fast cars, relying on a Mercedes people carrier with his brother acting as his driver"3 -
I never really blame players for chasing the money. It’s a short career and they need to set themselves up but Antonio is starting to be a strange one. He’s at least to me proved this is not about or at least not solely about extending his career or getting into the frame for a World Cup call up by Jamaica because if that was the case I’d assume he’d be wanting to get as fit as possible as quickly as possible and get to a position where he’s available for selection and visible and enjoying what is likely to be the final few months of a good career. If this is as I suspect all about a last payday then perhaps we have dodged a bullet because his attitude for me anyway is starting to look not totally focused on the football.2

Speaking purely about myself - if I could lay my hands on £18m to £20m(?) and had a couple of £1m+ houses paid for, not sure I could be arsed to go and play my football in a place like Qatar. Sooner stay at home, making my mark on a club like Charlton.
Fully aware this probably aint the norm though5 -
I said something similar to my Dad, who disagreed entirely and said he'd much rather take one final payday playing games that don't really matter in sunny Qatar instead of spending the next few months coming off the bench in a relegation battle.Gribbo said:Speaking purely about myself - if I could lay my hands on £18m to £20m(?) and had a couple of £1m+ houses paid for, not sure I could be arsed to go and play my football in a place like Qatar. Different strokes for different folks! I'd like him to come to us, but only if he wants to and is up for the fight.5 -
Pretty sure it won't just be a few games in Qatar though. If he comes back to work here (on TV for example) won't he need to pay a massive whack of tax on his Qatari earnings making the move farily meaningless anyway? I know that's what made Jordan Henderson stop off at Ajax on his way back to England from Saudi1

I just assumed players moving into the area seemed to be put in flats/apartments on the Greenwich Peninsula - never seems to be that much 'searching'0

How does that work then because the Netherlands has a higher personal income tax rate than the UK?fenaddick said:Pretty sure it won't just be a few games in Qatar though. I am no expert but I'm guessing the difference is he wasn't a Dutch taxpayer pre SaudiChris_from_Sidcup said:

I'm sure i read that he deferred his wages and then cut an agreement to waive what he was owed so that he could be released from his contract. Not sure we'll ever know the truth though.0

Of course, my point is that it's complicated to move to the Saudi & Qatar on a short term basis because there are tax implicationsChris_from_Sidcup said:I'm sure i read that he deferred his wages and then cut an agreement to waive what he was owed so that he could be released from his contract. I'm no expert but presume he'd still earn more after tax with a six month stint in Qatar than he would in South East London.fenaddick said:

The Qatari league season ends in a few weeks anyway as there's only 6 games left, so i assume if he does sign it'll be for next season as well.fenaddick said:

I would think that if he was going to sign for us he would have done so by now4

Thread title could probably do with an edit

TBH I'd rather us go for Gudmundsson who is a free agent, even though he is a similar age to Antonio, he would be great in a CAM role.9

NJ has told Cawley Antonio will be off to Qatar1

Boo
We left a gap in the squad for him and we still lack a real impact player off the bench1 -
No point having someone that’s not committed to play for us. Always felt like we were being used for fitness and a bargaining chip.Hindsight obviously.Henry Irving said:Boo

Sounds like it was only 2/3 days so we’ve not been used too muchSword65pf said:

What else does the article say about signing a free agent ??0
-
We were never glamorous enough for him but he needed a credible way to put himself in the shop window other than his agent just planting something.2

I also think this, the irony is he very likely wasn’t and never will be up to playing championship football now anyway.EugenesAxe said:We were never glamorous enough for him but he needed a credible way to put himself in the shop window other than his agent just planting something.2 -
Think there’s close to 0 chance either of those journalists are going to our press conferencesHenry Irving said:0
