England women cruising to a routine win over Ukraine, in an understandably empty stadium in Turkey. Now 4-1 after a goalless first half.

Thought I’d take my first serious look at women’s football……absolute crap.
I won’t be rushing back, the standard is appalling.

England poor tonight. Too much playing themselves into trouble by fannying about at the back and missed passes backwards and sideways. Play offs for us.

Missed Williamson but doubt she'd have made a great deal of difference, Spain clicked from start to finish

There's a reason Barcelona and Spain are the teams to beat in women's football

They invited the press by playing the ball with no purpose or outlet from the back. The second goal was a shocker.

I think you'll find that one of the two teams was actually pretty good.

I've watched plenty of England men's internationals that have been absolute crap, but I've never used them to judge the men's game in its entirety.

If you can’t get past trying to compare women’s football to the equivalent level of men’s football then it’s probably not for you.

Elite women’s football in its own right is very good, but will likely (generally) appear inferior if you constantly compare to elite men’s football.

That being said, there are plenty of ‘crap’ elite men’s matches too.

I think that this comparison to the men’s game does women’s football no favours in general.

In the history of organised football it's pretty much a brand new mass participation sport outside of the US. It will of course be miles behind the men's game on time alone.

I find the comparisons ie top English goalscorers of all time patronising and meaningless as there's no comparison with elite men's football.

However it is a fledgling game comparatively and will just take time to improve to a higher standard

Women and girls haven't had the opportunity to play football outside of America in the same way as men up until relatively recently and were often actively discouraged from doing so or even prohibited.

The technical quality of girls football now at Sunday league level often is way ahead of what my Sunday league level was in the 80s and i think in 20 years or so the standard of womens football will be even better.

I used to get irked with what i perceived as over promotion of womens game in the media when compared to its audience....however seeing how many girls love the game and participate themselves on a mass level makes me realise it was worth it. My daughter was so inspired by the lionesses and even more recently so with Sophie Whitehouse's heroics and she's barely out of her football kit these days or without a football as are all her mates.

I think women's game will progress like African players eg a bit of a joke/ way off 40 years ago but now a dominant and abundant presence in the game due to provision of opportunity and structured opportunity frameworks which has allowed potential to be realised.

TLDR Don't compare to men's game and give it time and it will improve.

Ps does anyone know how I'd go about getting a signed picture of Sophie Whitehouse for my daughter as I'm not on Social media?

You have to take womens footbal in its own right, you wouldnt say Serena Williams was a crap tennis player because she would have got slaughtered by Rafa Nadal,Could Flo Jo beat Usain Bolt over 100m,could Lexi Thomas beat Rory Macilroy,of course not,do you think 11 year olds football is crap because they dont provide the skill level of Andres Iniesta.Just look at all sports on their own merit,if you dont like them dont watch.

You are allowed to just not watch it, rather than try and belittle the game.

I think from his comment, he won't be,  so no idea why you said that.

Like the vast majority of guys I chat too, they don't watch women's football. Look at our crowds for it and at giveaway prices too.

After sitting through a season of Jonesball, I’m surprised the quality of football is bothering you now.

@RodneyCharltonTrotta The old skool way would be to write to her c/o the training ground and ask for one that way, although  given it's the close season  you'll have a bit of a wait for a reply. Alternatively you could use the form on the website to ask https://www.charltonafc.com/get-in-touch or email fans@cafc.co.uk

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for women playing football, good luck to them, it’s a great sport for one and all but it just won’t be catching any meaningful interest from me.
If it’s a Charlton side I will always want them to win……same applies for England but sad to say, that’s as far as it goes.
Call me old fashioned……I can live with it. 😏

Was at the match in Mallorca. Spain have now added a lot of physical strength to their technical excellence. The quality of their movement and passing remains way above other national teams. Clearly either team would get thrashed by our under 18 boys but that is totally irrelevant. Most people don’t compare the likes of Keely Hodgkinson, Dina Asher-Smith or Lauren Price to their male peers but for traditional male team sports there’s a really ‘stay in your lane’ feeling about a lot of comments.

The core of the team being exactly the same helps, and I reckon 5 or 6 of the best XI women's footballers in the world are Spanish and play for Barca.

Bonmati, Putellas, Pina, Guijarro, Paredes, Leon

Then add to that 3 or 4 world class players from other nationalities for Barca, and 3 or 4 from other clubs for Spain, and they're both absolutely formidable.
