Avoiding the willy waving contest, that's incredible support for a second division.
Fair play to Sheff Weds, averaging 23k to watch that shit week in week out, when their season was doomed from day one.

I would guess that as attendances have increased across the Championship and held up it’s started to trigger a FOMO knock on effect that’s attracted others to come along. It wouldn’t surprise me if we nudged up another 2-3k on our average this (second) season in the Championship.

My awareness is thin on this topic, but every home game this season I have been aware of newcomers at matches.
Could it be that Championship football is more affordable and accessible than Premiership football?
If we get to play West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur away next season I am not looking forward to the cost of that, or the hoops you have to jump through to get a ticket and go to the game.
For football fans going to Charlton (especially with proximity to the station) is a decent option, and we should exploit the ease of attending at the Valley….and fix all the turnstiles.

Attendance, in case people [including the clubs communication team] , in English means, as below

(e.gAttendance is the act of being present at a specific location, event, or institution, such as school, work, or meetings. It commonly refers to the number of people present ., event attendance) or the frequency of a person's presence (e.g., school attendance). QPR, Millwall and Brentford average attendance this season looks to be either side of 17k. Palace looks like it’s around 24k. Our 20k for the season doesn’t look too shabby, more so when you consider we don’t have the PL attraction boost or a promotion chasing season firing up the bandwagon.
All of those would have bigger attendances if their capacity allowed though.
I suspect it’s more likely the capacity at The Valley will be increased long before any of those 3 grounds will be. QPR will have to move. Millwall could increase theirs but I suspect that would only come if they do go up and stay there. Palace have plans that don’t seem to have progressed for ‘years’ and we are now at the stage where it’s probably a big ask to fund them.

it wouldn’t be cheap expanding the capacity at Charlton but we are still at a low point in a rising curve. Averaging 20k this season, particularly when our home form took a dive, is pretty impressive. More importantly, we broke the playoff ‘Jinx/curse’ of being promoted at Wembley and getting relegated straight away. Next season could  now see another big step forward. Ideally levelling up the roof of the East stand so it wraps around from the Upper North and filling that resulting void should be the next stage but I would guess developing the South stand would be a lot cheaper and the less disruptive option for us than expanding the capacity for those other 3 clubs if we do it before we really need it if the curve keeps rising.

We don't even own our stadium, in what world do you think we are going to be expanding it?
In the world in which the club owners buy it. Until I read the @Raith_C_Chattonell post above I hadn’t realised that development creep  had got so close to the ground. Now is probably a better time to sort out the ownership of the ground rather than wait until it’s worth considerably more.
Whilst we’re in the championship they’re never going to have a justifiable reason to spend 40M on the stadium financially it’s a massive ask, and would probably cost us championship relegation similar to what have happened to Oxford this year all money goes to stadium none to the squad.

We realistically need the prem income money to be able to afford it
After we have afforded a team capable of keeping us in the Prem.

Then before we can expand we need to convince the Council to allow us to and have solutions to the resulting infrastructure issues that larger crowds will bring. This includes issues caused by selling off the homes behind AC stand, public transport which appears to have contracted since the Prem days and road access with Woolwich Road becoming a cycle path that also has some motorised transport on it and finally much more limited parking.

Charlton would need to be an established Premier League club again—probably pushing into the top half—before expanding The Valley even becomes a realistic conversation. On top of that, the stadium ownership situation would have to be fully sorted first.

We were actually close to that point in the mid-2000s, which is why those expansion plans were seriously looked at. But the subsequent collapse and tumble down the league pyramid put an end to all of it. Right now, it’s hard to say how long it’ll be before we’re back in a position where revisiting The Valley’s expansion makes any real sense.

The Woolwich Road is not helped after game with the club/Bayliss coaches blocking the road and making a bus stop unusable

Over 12,000 sold and over 1,500 yet to renew = over 13,500 STs being made available. Say 2,000 away fans leaves less than 4,500 tickets for match by match sales, less if there are areas they can’t sell because of segregation issues. They are going to need a smaller bandwagon.

We’re segregating the North Stand (away end) from next season so the away allocation will be much smaller and tickets will be available in that stand for home fans.

Also when you look at Bournemouth, Palace, Brentford and Fulham who all have similar or smaller capacities than us, you could argue if there's even a need to expand if we do get the premier league.

I think we'd have to get up, and then stay there for 2-3 years before anyone deemed an expansion to be necessary.

Bournemouth have been up there for 4 years and only now have decided to expand their ground to 20k.
    I am personally anti-expansion past 30,000 ish.

Football is cyclical and while we may get back to the Prem some time and sell out every week while there, we likely won’t stay there forever unless we became the next Man City.

We don’t currently fill 27,000 in the second tier. Would hate to see us expand to the 40s within a decade (assuming “ideal” conditions) and then playing in a stadium 30% full a decade later.

Now our 999 year lease has been confirmed the Berylsons plan to expand The Den. Talk is to 34k. I don’t think we’re ready for that size yet but we certainly need more than the 20k we currently have. We’ve sold out 15 times this season and have been regularly selling out for the last few seasons. And quite often it’ll be well in advance of the actual match so the demand is there.

I think 26k would be plenty but I suppose by going for 34k that covers for any sustained success the future may bring on the pitch.

That is going to look proper shit when you’re back to pulling 8,000 week in week out in the third division.

Also, the club are introducing a buy back scheme for next season where fans can buy season tickets when they’re not being used so there will be those available for match by match sales.

I know you’re going to struggle to believe this but the crowd has changed a lot down there these days. The whole place is full of families and youngsters. The fan zone is excellent. The whole match day experience is good. It’s a proper family day out these days. Blokes bring their kids and missus. There’s grandads there with 3 or 4 grandkids in tow. You always got a few families dotted about but now it seems it’s a big percentage of the crowd.

No, from what I can gather it’s going to be permanently segregated and will probably be fenced off from the away fans. The design of the ground makes it doable. Why would it be any different for when we played Charlton?

So the more toxic element of our away support can come and have a froth at the mouth and knock a gate down while shouting angrily and gesturing wildly about getting into a scrap with 3 pensioners and 5 families. Local rivalry innit.

Interesting. Just wondered given the history of previous matches there and having both sets of fans in closer proximity in the same stand.

Yes fair enough, I got the prediction wrong there and I held my hands up at the time. Well what I actually said was I hadn’t seen any trouble at any of the away games I had been to and I hadn’t at the time.

But I’ve been to nearly every away game this season and there’s plenty of occasions when we share a stand with the home fans and there’s not been any trouble so I don’t think it’ll be a problem if we do it at the Den. As long as it’s done properly.

There will always be the potential for a bit of disorder at a local derby though and maybe I was being a bit naive prior to the game at your place. It’s the same up and down the country and all over the world.

How on earth are you going from not selling the side/front seats of the lower tier to away fans, to suddenly putting home and away fans in the same stand?
I know you’re going to struggle to believe this but the crowd has changed a lot down there these days. The whole place is full of families and youngsters. The fan zone is excellent. The whole match day experience is good. It’s a proper family day out these days. Blokes bring their kids and missus. There’s grandads there with 3 or 4 grandkids in tow. You always got a few families dotted about but now it seems it’s a big percentage of the crowd.
Didn't you also tell us that your away support never cause any trouble before the game in September?

I saw no issues at all at the Charlton game at The Den - fans were mixing before and after the game (helped that you tonked us of course) and it was all friendly banter. I accept that Millwall are not the club they were in the 70s/80s - still a bunch of spanners in a rusty toolbox of course.
You are currently light years ahead of us and I think that's about ownership more than anything. You've had great owners for the last 20 years and it looks like Berylson Junior is following in his father's footsteps. We've been totally mismanaged over the same period.
I've got a feeling that the gap will close over the next few years though - I know, it's the hope that kills.

Let's not get too carried away here. They've had a good season but they're ultimately still a side in the same division who get smaller crowds. I also think they'll be hard pushed to replicate this season what with the 3 sides coming down all likely to be very strong. On the flip side of that, we will be looking to strengthen and improve so I don't think we'll be 30 points behind them next year.

Things can easily change. Sheff Utd finished 40 points ahead of Derby last season, but this season Derby will finish above them. I'd say that Palace are light years ahead of us, Millwall are not.

Important note: if Millwall get promoted, please ignore the above.

I can see the u13 throat slitting crew decanting to the away end - the pretend ‘hold me backathon’ will see some PB’s

Just the one good season? We’ve finished top half of the championship in 7 consecutive seasons now.

Smaller crowds? ACTUAL crowds are probably on par. (Your own attendance expert on here Airman says your 20k attendances are ‘fantasy’. His words). Looks like our season ticket sales will be much higher than yours for next season as well. Yes it helps that we’ve had a very good season but you’ve just had your best season in what… ten years?

And yes you will be looking to strengthen and improve this pre season. But you’ve got Nathan Jones doing your strengthening and improving so not sure there will be any actual strengthening or improving going on 😁

also, owning our own ground and training ground is a big plus that puts us ahead of you somewhat. The 999 year long lease getting confirmed this year means developments will be pushed ahead with. Things are definitely on the up in the blue corner of south London.

Yes, ‘light years’ is probably stronging it a bit. But things are definitely changing in the south east London footballing landscape. Luckily for you Bromley are now in the league which will stop you lot being the smallest league club in south east London 😉😁

I thought you as a club don't care about crowds as a measure of success as you have constantly told us on here in the past and have a go at us for supposedly going on about it. Troll.
