A classic to start you off.

The Third Man (1949 ) Director - Carol Reed

Starring Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard. Shot entirely in war torn atmospheric Vienna, Joseph Cotten carries this classic film noir that keeps you guessing at what's going on until Orson Welles appears in probably the greatest introduction to a movie character and then promptly steals the show with a short cameo appearance.

The music score played on the Zither by Anton Karas, who was playing in a local bar when the Director was present. The catchy theme sounds both jaunty and other worldly at the same time and catapulted Karas to world fame by topping the UK and US charts for 11 weeks and led to him performing before Queen Elizabeth.

If you've not seen it before, then it's an absolute must watch.

There’s so many obvious ones but I’ll throw in one from left field that not many would have seen .

    P’tang Yang Kipperbang (1982) - An absolute gem of a movie .

    Southern Comfort (1981)

Only seen this twice. A film similar to Deliverance. Not very successful at the Box Office but worth a watch.

  • Far too many to mention but if you haven’t seen The Act of Killing then you’re missing out on the most unique and astonishing documentary I’ve ever seen (it was a ludicrous travesty that it didn’t win an Oscar). Jaw was on the floor by the end of the film. It might be hard for some to stomach but if you can handle it, I can assure you, that you’ve never seen anything like it and you never will see anything like it again. I wouldn’t even read the plot before watching. Just go into it blind and you’ll end up thinking WTF did I just watch?

    Duel (1971)

David Mann is a middle-aged salesman driving on a business trip. He encounters a dilapidated tanker truck in the Mojave Desert. Mann passes the truck, but the truck speeds up and roars past him. When Mann overtakes and passes it again, the truck blasts its horn.

    The battle begins.

Great, intense film and Spielberg's first movie.

The before trilogy. 3 movies with just 2 people talking, each one is filmed and set 9 years apart from each other. Probably the best romantic chemistry there’s ever been on film.

Complete aside, but part of the score features a cajun song by the Balfa brothers near the end of the film.
Did Hollywood Beyond completely plagiarised it for their small hit The Colour of Money in the eighties?
