3 previous winners in the group and Costa Rica finished top.MrOneLung said:Thinking back I was quite excited about the squad Hodgson picked in Brazil, so no one should take any notice of my opinions !1 -
What about the Southampton manager then? Or Collins Sichenje at Charlton. We could call him SC or Sichy for short, rather than by his first name. Like @IdleHans this is a pet hate of mine.DamoNorthStand said:IdleHans said:I'm glad 'Trent' isn't going if only for the fact that people insist on calling him 'Trent' as if he's their best mate. (apologies for my grouchiness, it's the heat)Think it’s more the fact that Alexander Arnold is a bit of a mouthful0 -
It really is a shit schedule. The competition starts on Thursday and on the Saturday when it should really get going we have to wait until 8pm for a match, and that’s bloody Qatar! Is it really organised by such fools, or is there a reason for this?0

And the fact he’s actually requested to be known as Trent rather than Alexander-Arnold. Hence what he has on the back of his shirt.DamoNorthStand said:IdleHans said:I'm glad 'Trent' isn't going if only for the fact that people insist on calling him 'Trent' as if he's their best mate. Sick of it.

Slightly different though when they have an embarrassment of riches in their respective positions, especially France. Carvajal is 34 and hasn’t really been involved in the Spain squad since the Euro’s. Whereas after James who is injured on a fairly regular basis, we haven’t got anyone else of that level.rina said:

I think I’m just gonna try to enjoy it despite the inevitable Tuchel car crash. Spain v Uruguay should be a good quality game.

I can't think of any England manager that had such a good choice of players to pick from.
Being negative is a trait of being English I suppose and I can remember when Eric Cantona and David Ginola weren't picked for France despite being top trumps when it came to Flair.
Like others feel, there's a few surprises but we have never had such a choice of attacking midfielders and both Foden and Palmer have missed out. Foden has been on the periphery at City this season and Palmer is either injured or looks frustrated playing for 10th place Chelsea. Going to Saudi Arabia should make you history but not if you can take penalties and play in heat it seems for Toney.
Rodgers has had an outstanding season at Villa and I hope he stays there. One Real Madrid player, Bellingham got in even if TA-A didn't but Jude isn't put on a pedestal by Tuchel like Southgate did because after Kane he was the main man under Gareth.
Without that over head kick by the confident Jude we were going home early and no Knighthood for the decent man that is GS. Knighthoods should've been put in room 101, century's before Savile.
Hopefully Big Phil Chapple will be out there ready to spot a Japanese, Cabo Verde or Curacao player if the price is right for Charlton.

Foden and Palmer missing out shouldn't be that surprising. Trent has always been hit or miss.
Tbh I don't think we'll win it but we're one of the best 4 sides going and Kane seems to have gone to the next level which we need0 -
Foden has done precisely nothing for England in his nearly 50 caps. Not sure what the clamour for him is all about.Palmer has proven to affect England games, but he is woefully out of form and needs a summer off as plainly not fit.4

Messi went off last night with what looked like a hamstring injury0

This is coming from someone who spends most of there football time in a championship (or league one) bubble, but why is it inevitable for Tuchel to fail in this tournament? The Red Robin said:I think I’m just gonna try to enjoy it despite the inevitable Tuchel car crash. You’re quoting someone who is probably one of Nathan Jones’ biggest haters on this forum. Calling for him to go post-Millwall and asking the question since “even if we stay up, should we aim higher?” referencing a change of manager.stoneroses19 said:

There is a surprising amount of similarity in coaching between Tuchel and Nathan Jones. So it makes sense that TRR would be expecting him to fail.2 -
If Palmer had played at this World Cup it would have been his fourth successive summer of tournament football. He’s been playing through injury all season and only played one England qualifying game. He needs a rest.MrOneLung said:Foden has done precisely nothing for England in his nearly 50 caps. Are there all that many Spanish ones, there's the young defender but cant thinknif others in contention0

Spanish players in the RM squad with capsAlwaysneil said:Are there all that many Spanish ones, there's the young defender but cant thinknif others in contention
Dani Carvajal (52 caps)
Raul Asencio (0 caps but in the squad in March)
Fran Garcia (2 caps in 2023)
Dean Huijsen (7 caps)
Dani Ceballos (13 caps, last in 2023)
So not many but 3 (Carvajal, Asencio and Huijsen) who might have been expected to be called up0 -

Except Spain 🤣🤣Sage said:Still convinced we seem to be the only nation that would leave a Real Madrid player out of the squad and someone who has played in some huge games. People focus so much on what he’s not amazing at that we overlook Trent being practically the only one we got that can do what he does so well.
Ludicrous decisions are to include Spence, Livramento, Burn, Quansah, and Henderson. And to select these over players like Trent, Hall, Maguire, Colwill, Gibbs-White and Palmer is insane.0 -
Can someone tell me I'm not going mad.I keep hearing Bellingham is in direct competition with Morgan Rogers and may well lose a starting berth to him.Bellingham has always been a number 6 for me.when I watched him on the odd occasion for Brum or his early England caps I thought he was like a rolls royce of a number 6. Now I know Madrid and England like to push him up as a ten.Well at least I thought they did.Being premier league illiterate,I thought I'd watch some rolling reels of Elliott Andersons season.
Very impressive. Good range of passing, great feet & reads the game immensely well as he sits on the six role breaking bits up and moving the ball forward. Never shy to get into the box and have a go as well.Being la liga illiterate,..I then thought I'd have a look at what Bellingham has been up to this season with another rolling reelWell. It was almost a carbon copy of the Anderson tape!!Sitting predominantly deep.great feet. Breaking bits (up at a slightly faster pace than Anderson)... yada yada yada.So my thoughts are this.Surely Bellingham is in direct competition with Anderson and not Rogers?Gibbs-white should've been on the plane to give Rogers a run for his money.No?0 -
Tend to agree, and it’s what Southgate should have done more - the issue is, Bellingham can do both.0
-
Bellingham's best season in La Liga came playing as very high up 10/false 9. That works well with Kane who drops deep as Bellingham pushes forward. Rogers will also run beyond him. Bellingham can play as the 6 but it's a waste of his athleticismcarly burn said:Can someone tell me I'm not going mad.I keep hearing Bellingham is in direct competition with Morgan Rogers and may well lose a starting berth to him.Bellingham has always been a number 6 for me.when I watched him on the odd occasion for Brum or his early England caps I thought he was like a rolls royce of a number 6. Watching Wharton playing now in the Conference League final. Absolutely insane he isn't in the squad but Henderson is6

But judging by what I've seen of him this season in a RM shirt that may not necessarily be the case now.0 -
So if Bellingham played as a 6 where would Rice play ?0

Yeah the signing of Mpabbe moved him further back. He's still better more advanced in my opinioncarly burn said:

Yeah Rice as an 8.MrOneLung said:So if Bellingham played as a 6 where would Rice play ?
And here's a out of left fielder.
Rogers doesn't get the 10 gig as Kane gets it with Watkins ahead of him.
I do happen to think that Kane is both our best 9 and best 101
