Wasn’t Claudio Ranieri linked too?0

Murray should have accepted Curbs’ offer to serve his final year and then made a considered rather than hubristic appointment.6
-
I've met and spoken to Curbs plenty of times and he told me that if he had been offered the same size budget that Dowie was given he would have stayed the extra season.
It seems madness to of let curbushly go and then
give Dowie a large budget, but that's what happened 🤷9 -
It seems longer than 20 years ago. My son and I attended the pre season opener. I believe it was against the New Zealand national side. The result was 1-1. I was not that impressed by Dowie, but wished to give the man time to settle in. The MOM in the game was a Central American trialist, called Boanas (I apologise for not remembering the name correctly). He looked really good.Reports reached me later in the season after Dowie's departure that the club's transfer funds had been misused. We not only paid top whack for inadequate players, but also, allegedly, funds were being syphoned off to agents, one being Dowie's brother.Did the club try hard enough to get the NZ match's MOM? We were told a visa was not available. Also did we have an option on Steve Sidwell, that was not taken up?Does anyone on CL know any more about this? Aside from the fact that a number of the 'buys' that season were appalling, a lot of cash allegedly went missing.0

I did enjoy a couple of very enjoyable days in Valencia during his reign. Of no comfort to me now though obviously.0

Aside from the fact that a number of the 'buys' that season were appalling, a lot of cash allegedly went missing.I think you're thinking of Christian Bolanos. He was Costa Rican. He signed a loan deal with us in August 2006 but then we couldn't get a work permit. Work permits were a lot harder to get back then and you had to have played a certain percentage of games for your country and he'd only made his international debut the year before. To be honest, I don't think he would have made all that much difference, he went on to play a bit in Denmark and Norway but he didn't set the world alight. We already had a fairly disappointing winger who played mainly in the Danish leagues at that time, I don't think we needed two.I don't know about Sidwell there, I know that Curbs wanted him and Bullard but Murray thought they were too expensive. I also seem to remember that some players, and I think Sidwell was one of them, were asking if Curbishley would be there the next year when we were trying to get him and when that wasn't confirmed he saw out his contract at Reading.2

I do remember his appointment and being completely underwhelmed, was CP his only managerial experience?
I can't remember all the ins and outs of the appointment but seems totally incredible that Murray would appoint him totally out of spite, not saying its not true?0 -
Curbs wanted Bullard and Sidwell cost £2M each. Murray said no. Curbs left.
Murray appointed Dowie to upset Jordon. Gave him £12M which he wasted.
Thats the story.5 -
Any truth in the story which suggested that Dowie took the team for a training run on the morning of an away game at Newcastle and couldn’t find their way back?5

I believe that is a true story & from memory I think I recall that the players had to dash across a motorway or dual carriageway to get back to the hotel.pettgra said:Any truth in the story which suggested that Dowie took the team for a training run on the morning of an away game at Newcastle and couldn’t find their way back?3 -

That rings a bell but can't recall the actual story. One I do remember from up north, he got somebody else to take a team meeting as he was decorating at his mums house. The Red Robin said:.charltonbob said:
