What the manufacturers did with wet belts was design them so they would last through the warranty. I can't believe this policy as surely it will ultimately affect the reputation of the company but I have warned a few people who were about to buy wet belted cars because the knowledge isn't fully out there yet. It is the fault of governments too, so silly changes like stop start and wet belts were introduced to save a tiny bit in terms of economy whereas they life limit the car. And look at the LED light clusters. Apart from annoying me to see LED strips of lights all over the rear of cars, when they go wrong it isn't just going to be a bulb from Halfords. Buyers of older cars really need to clue themselves up on how easy to fix and how cheap the parts are going to be on any car they buy. And a lot of the new cars on the road won't be touched with barge poles when people work it out.
Going forward are there going to be any cars manufactured that are DIY friendly ? I seriously doubt it.

Any chance we can go back to electric cars? What cars are people looking to buy at the moment please?
I was looking at buy a second hand Merc EQE SUV, but then saw they have a new GLC EV just launched. Are they likely to launch a new EQE model in the next year or so?

We're well into the second year of our three year lease on an Ioniq 5 , it's been fine although just boring to drive,  no idea what to go for next as yet,  probably go electric again but I'll need something more interesting/ fun for the weekends.

I've got my dream ICE car and intend keeping that until I either kick the bucket or can't drive it anymore. But I am looking for cheap'ish runaround to avoid having to drive my wife's car all the time! I signed up to the new Renault Twingo and so get first dibs when it is launched later this year, but I did that more for the potential resale value as they will be the hottest car around. But very small so I have my eye on a Renault 5 or maybe a Renault 4.

For the cars you are looking at, I believe the EQE will be phased out over the next year or so to be replaced with a new generation of EVs. The new Volvo EX60 looks nice, as does the BMW iX3

I just looked at the Volvo EX60 stats.
    • Electric range 503.3 miles.
    • Battery charge 10%-80%: 19 minutes.
    • 1647L cargo space
    • 680 bhp
    • 0-62mph 3.6 seconds
People are going to run out of reasons not to buy an electric car soon...

Those numbers are hard to argue with

The fundamental issues remain in weight, residual value, battery life and replacement cost, access to charging points, high end Volvos are expensive, good cars and fairly robust.

My lived experience with the electric van is an overall impractical one and remains so. I'm not against the advancements maybe I'm too cynical

Every single review I've read rates the Renault 5 very highly.

I think they are still miles away from getting it right with commercial vehicles, but cars are getting there. Reducing the cost of replacement batteries after warranty (most are 8 years) will crack the residual value issue.

    Absolutely

Still a bigger leap of faith required than I'm prepared to make right now though

A mate if mine had a Renault 5 GT back in the day. Absolute rocket, shit scarily fast but seemed to blow up every other week but none of us could touch it for raw speed off a standing start. The only car I saw give it a serious run was, weirdly, a twin cam Nissan micra!

The EV Renault 5s do look cool as fuck and without pesky fuel injectors to slow them down I can imagine they give an enormous smile upon stamping your right foot down

The key figure is the £56680 list price ! 😉😄

    Thats a challenge still.

Of course as we see with other brands EVs are getting more affordable so I agree most will adopt in due course but still a way to go.

Some of the performance figures for EV are incredible, but when you open the tap on anything above 150 + BHP you had better know what you are doing even with Traction Control and Stability platforms.
680 bhp quoted for basically a estate car type vehicle , combined with the Torque that EV can produce and you have a monster on your hands.
Only have to look at the tragedy at the  school in Wimbledon when a Defender went  out of control.

Yes it's a big chunk of wedge but it's actually a similar price or maybe slightly cheaper than the equivalent ICE X3

Edit - you were quoting the Volvo - which is slightly more than the Hybrid/ICE XC60.

    The gap is closing.

Not sure I’m reading 51 pages about EV’s, but what’s the latest plans for on street charging outside your house in 2026?
Where I live there are so many streets full of old terrace houses, I can still see that as a major issue and that was the same when I last looked into it a few years ago.

I’m very lucky, we have a driveway and plenty of parking. I’ll look into EV’s for myself when my new car needs replacing in three years or so.
Both my daughters only have on street parking where they live, currently running petrol city cars, but no charge points on the street means they might have no choice to go ICE again (plus the cost, the difference in pcp for my eldest was £250/month for similar sized cars, even with motorfinity).

Our street has every 10th lampost as a charger but not sure how common that is (or how expensive/slow)
