AA, this is really sound and relevant. I think Cox will bat 6
The one reason why Cox might bat at 7 will be if he is tasked with taking the game away from the opposition which was what Smith (strike rate 74.57 for England) was asked to do when he first came into the side.

They did but it was before Smith had to come out of the team. I don't think they'll change it though

Annoying,  but not a surprise. The rest of the day will be fine.

It's painful having the Kia Oval App on my phone, I might improve it by renaming it something less embarrassingly Surrey,  like The Joydens Wood Dogging Society.

You already have that app on your phone tho. Can't have 2 with the same name.

Daft though that Rew will keep and bat at 6, with Cox being a specialist bat at 7.

Indeed which of them is the better keeper?
Cox didn't keep in any of the last five Lions matches he played in with Rew, Mayes and Moores all taking the gloves instead. He kept for Essex in his one and only red ball game this season but rarely gets the opportunity even in franchise cricket which is probably as much to do with his ability as a fielder as any perceived weaknesses keeping.

There is one other aspect though to consider. The chances of breaking a finger are increased as a keeper especially if a player doesn't do the job regularly. Some players are prone to doing that anyway and Cox has had several periods out of the game due to doing just that including missing his England debut.
Cox has a very heavy strapping on his right thumb which is the one he fractured in the nets prior to what would have been his Test debut against NZ. All the time he can justify his place in a side as a batter only and the side has an alternative to keep, especially at international level, I don't think he will be taking the gloves. Essex left Pepper out of their original side in their last match but brought him in to replace Cox when the latter was called up for this Test.

Root was the obvious choice as captain for this match, as  Stokes was the leading wicket taker out of the first test XI and Root's the leading wicket taker in the current team.

Let's hope he stays fit for the third test, otherwise we might see Jofra Archer as captain.

England even have their golf clubs in the changing rooms. Bet they don't show us the crates of Brewmeister Snake Venom lager.

In the 2nd Ashes Test Archer batted at 11 and had Jacks, Atkinson and Carse in front of him. That said, he did average 45 in that game.

The most unenthusiastic out signal from an umpire ever?

Hopefully this will jinx it. Surely there are better seamers than Baker?

    There are.
    Robinson
    Atkinson
    Stokes
Hopefully all will be back soon.

Not many courses around The Oval though. Nearest one....Dulwich & Sydenham perhaps ?

Root attempting to out do Stokes in terms of "left-field" thinking.

Proper Test cricket today, 3 an over and 4 wickets in two sessions.

    Quiet on here today.

Not sure of the bowling today. Too many freebies & wides/byes. Joffra still sunning himself in Barbados by looks of things.

Good run rate by NZ after the first hour. Cant say the same for our over rate (as usual). Might get in 80 overs by the 7pm close.

Good proactive batting,  it's a flat pitch,  with a tired and raw attack  and old ball.

243-5. After this many overs at Lord's, the cumulative score was 222-18.
