If the chant is "Rooooot" (with a silent "t") for Root, what is it for Rew? And what will it be when the two Rews, as they inevitably will, are playing together?

The things that test us in Tests.

At the moment it's ROOOOO and ROOOOOOOT.

The younger Rew will have to be Dave.

It may not be big or clever, but Gay and Root is a funny partnership.

Nicely and quietly done by Gay to get his half century

That 6 Brook hit over backward point is one of the most extraordinary shots I've seen.

Brook goes lbw to Henry now to bring the 2 debutants to the crease.

Has there ever been a Test partnership before with 6 letters in the combined surnames?

That was a stupid shot by Rew. He was dropped 5 minutes earlier going for the hook and then attempted another one that he almost gloved. Then ducked one and then attempted another hook which he got out from.

Pretty much every well connected cricket journalist reporting that Stokes will be back as captain for the next test

Blundell and Carey have really shown how valuable it is to have a decent wicketkeeper who can stand up to the stumps. Offers a different strategy from mindlessly banging in short balls.

Australia showed how important it is to have a good keeper and now New Zealand are doing the same.
We have a keeper equally as good in Foakes but he can't get a game because he's not deemed good enough with the bat despite having a test batting average of just over 30.

The difference between those that can keep (especially standing back) and those that do keep as a discipline to the extent that they can become game changers.

Baker edges behind for 4 and we trail by exactly 100. Crucial 10th wicket stand and both of them fulfilled their roles well

100 behind but looked as if it would be much worse.

Hopefully the bowlers can rise to the occasion

Five biggest first-innings deficits conceded by teams going on to win Tests at The Oval:

    1. England beat Australia in 1902 after being 141 behind
    2. India beat England in 2021 after being 99 behind
    3. India beat England in 1971 after being 71 behind
    4. Sri Lanka beat England in 2024 after being 62 behind
    5. England beat Australia in 1997 after being 40 behind
