Argentina have an absolutely awful group in fairness. I’d expect any of the top 6/7 teams in the world to breeze through that without conceding.

The real test will come when they play a side that can actually put them under a bit of pressure.
A lot of people said the same in Qatar.

Golden boot race is unlike any World Cup I can remember... after two rounds of games...

Messi 5, Mbappe 4, Haaland 4 (30 minutes to play), Undav 3, David 3, Kane 2 and plays his second game tomorrow.
Been a quality world cup so far with all the big guns banging them in, with one notable exception of course.

Now the world cup has expanded and there's a lot of lesser teams there, i think players scoring a lot will become a common theme moving forward. Wouldn't surprise me to see someone get 10+ in this tournament.

Not bad when you think that apart from Brazilian Ronaldo (who got 8 in 2002) no player at any world cup from 1978 to 2018 got more than 6 at a tournament. If Messi isn't rested v Jordan he might get more than that just in the group stage.

    Ridiculous numbers.

They are ridiculous numbers but there isn’t a single good team in that list. Still have to be able to score the goals, of course

They absolutely could win it. I just think its
hard to tell how good they actually are at the moment. Austria and Algeria are proper nothing sides.

I’d still have them below France and probably Spain too.

Also 1 extra game in this tournament than the previous 32 team tournaments, and 2 more games than when it was just 16 teams.

I hadn't realised Gerd Muller got 10 goals in just 6 games in 1970

Well we know they're good because since 2021 they've won every single competition they've played.

    2021 - Copa America
2022 - Finalissima (destroyed Euro winners Italy 3-0)
    2022 - World Cup
    2024 - Copa America
2026 - 2 wins out of 2 at the World Cup

In that time their record is: W17 D5 L1

I completely agree with you that France and Spain are better on paper, you could potentially even argue that England are too because there's not many of Argentina's XI i'd want over ours.

Man for man this Argentina side are not as good as other nations, but they have something about them as a team, and of course they have Messi.

tournament will proper kick into gear tomorrow as the last group games start and it's therefore knockout football, no more chances.

it's been good enough already so far - really looking forward to what's to come

Sometimes you get really entertaining group games, but teams then become more cautious when it's knockout football, and the games become far less entertaining for the neutral.

Plus in some ineffable way, winning something does seem to make it more likely to win other things too, its almost habitual now and they will be full of self belief and confidence in a way no charismatic manager could completely replicate. They expect to win pretty much every time and it becomes self-fulfilling.

Don't forget everyone to thank Donald for the greatest World Cup ever, he's sure to get some kind of award at the end of it.

Any team that beats France is winning the World Cup IMO
They’re clearly a talented team, especially in attack. But I think a lot of people are getting carried away with them. Struggled first half against Senegal and beat a poor Iraq side, and gifted a goal in that game.

This World Cup is up for grabs. There’s not one side that’s significantly better than any other contender.

I liked the idea I heard the other day when knockout games go to extra time - do the pens first and then whoever wins gets a half goal advantage going into the extra 30 mins....guarantees a winner at the end of it and would mean not just watching 30 mins of tapping it about and playing for pens.

According to the wise old sage Lee Dixon, everyone who likes football will be pleased he scored that.
Pulling the old “If you don’t agree with me, you obviously don’t like football” card.

As if Lee Dixon didn’t have enough reasons for people to think he’s a twat.
