Only 2 out of 9 Asian teams qualified for the knockouts. Almost half the eliminated teams are from Asia. And one of those two teams is Australia!

Umbongo umbongo they drink it in Zaire.

    See that just doesn't rhyme.

They changed their name for that reason

Well done South Africa, unexpected result gets them the last 32 match against Canada.
And a terrible result for Scotland. A South Korea win or draw would've meant that group was one third placed side Scotland would finish above. But Korea end up third with 3 points and a -1 GD so are above Scotland in the rankings.
There are still 4 or 5 groups where it's plausible that third place will get 1 or 2 points and finish below Scotland, but they're running out of options. South Africa finishing third and below them was a banker and that's gone thanks to SA's superb result. Clearly Brazil didn't want to be known as the team that allowed Scotland into the knockout stages.
Yes it's still possible but they need a lot of results to go their way.

There's also going to be a few games like Australia v Paraguay, Austria v Algeria, Egypt v Iran where a draw puts both sides through, so i wonder if we might end up seeing some 'tactical' draws in games.
No shock that all 3 of those ended up as draws. Iran just missed out though, which will of course please the USA.

Interestingly pre-tournament there was a lot of talk that the format would probably mean teams only needed 3 points to progress, but we ended up with only 1 side (Senegal) managing to progress from 3rd place with 3 points.
And Senegal, that only team with 3 points to progress, had a positive goal difference meaning that all teams in future WCs will have to compete to win because there is every possibility that 4 points alone might not be sufficient to progress.

Of course, Italy, won the 1982 WC without winning a Group stage game by drawing all three matches. Iran were eliminated in this WC despite doing just that.

Since Tuchel took over the best side we’ve played has probably been Senegal who tore our defence apart in a 3-1 win. I know it was a friendly but I’ve not seen enough from our defence since to suggest they can cope with a proper attacking side. DR Congo will probably be a lot tighter than a lot of people hope

Senegal definitely have higher class players and team than Congo but as always it creating and taking the chances if the opposition have a low block.

So Democratic Republic of Congo, AKA Zaire back in the day are the last 32 opponents for England and the pressure is cranked up as jeopardy is now added to the WC menu which was missing from the Group games where South Korea could lose 2 out of 3 but still get to the KO round.

Iran were the unlucky loser with 3 draws seeing them go home after Cape Verde finished 2nd with their 3 draws.
Iraq playing with 10 men and being out of their depth meant Senegal gave them a thrashing and the talented team from Africa finally arrived in this WC.

South Korea didn't qualify for the knockout stage.

Really poor showing. Still crazy Qatar have won the last two Asian cups when Japan are head and shoulders above everyone else

Iran (20 in the FIFA rankings) have an excuse, after the awful way they were treated and their disrupted preparation, whereas South Korea (25) badly underperformed.

Best set of games last night. Some cracking end to end matches and quality goals. Hopefully that continues as we reach the knockouts.
That Jordan goal was a beaut.
If England don't make it, which looks increasingly likely, then I'd like an Argentina v France final, the two most impressive sides so far.
Would like to see Argentina win it for Messi. Their performances so far look like a procession for the GOAT.
You could just watch the last world cup again.

Didn't expect this would turn out to be the most entertaining World Cup I've ever seen in my life😂😂😂 Some new teams with surprising results plus all the permutations which keep changing whenever a goal is scored 😂😂😂

You spotted the deliberate mistake 👏🏻
It was Senegal who lost 2 matches and still qualified because of their 5-0 win over Iraq giving them a +2 with 3 points.

    Eurgh, completely the opposite.

Anyone but Argentina again.  I'm still very suspicious that they were given the rub of the green from officials 4 years ago so Messi could win and I'm not really up for 5 more games of repetitive Messi love-ins.

Yes, he's the best ever but it's boring going on and on about him.
Caveat: Also don't want Ronaldo to win.

Don't mind Portugal generally, but he'd be unbearable.
Hopefully they'll keep picking him - he is well past his best. Zero modesty...

I’ve seen most of the games so far, the ones in the early hours by avoiding the score and watching the full games on iPlayer or ITVX the next morning.

I thought the Colombia v Portugal game was the best of the tournament so far, aided by the tremendous atmosphere generated by the Colombian fans. Some great pace and attacking football.

A bit of an antidote to the fairly dreary performance served up by England earlier. Just as well that we have Kane and Bellingham to dig us out of trouble but we can’t keep relying upon that and I don’t think we’re serious contenders, especially with such a shaky defence. The full-back situation and the decision not to call up Alexander-Arnold is a little baffling, particularly given James’ injury record.

Cape Verde have been an excellent watch, especially their 2-2 draw with Uruguay. I also enjoyed their game against Saudi Arabia, which was only slightly marred by an American co-commentator, a guy called Davis, repeatedly uttering words and phrases like “getting the ball up the field” and “issues in the locker room”. He also kept talking about “legendary” Saudi players who I doubt anyone has ever heard of, although hyperbole seems to be second nature to Americans.

All that said, he was, and is, a minor irritant compared to the double act of Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon. Matterface barely mentions players who are on the ball (the Panama players were hardly referred to) and his rambling discussions and ‘banter’ with Dixon are, to put it mildly, banal. A shame, because ITV have some good pundits.

The Austria v Algeria game had a good second half, although after the last hydration/advert break, it started to resemble the “shame of Gijon” game between Germany and Austria in 1982, with both teams farting about and playing out time for the draw that suited them both. The two injury time goals created extraordinary drama, although I was gutted for Iran after the American regime’s disgraceful treatment of them. No doubt Donald and his poodle Gianni are delighted that the Iranians are on the way home and the security of the USA is once again preserved.

Overall, though, the games have been entertaining and the standard from many of the lower ranked nations surprisingly good. Enjoyable also to see players other than those who habitually appear in the Champions League.

Yeah the games are all on the designated weekday in the States. Felt weird to say Netherlands game was on a Tuesday (even though true) since it directly follows Monday evening games and is technically happening on Monday evening in the host country.

The games as listed above are all in chronological order.

Maybe someone was hoping Switzerland would finish 2nd in their group and Canada would win and play in Vancouver. Not suggesting for a moment...

The third place teams are up against group winners for obvious reasons, but because there’s only eight of them, there have to be four second place teams playing the remaining four group winners. This leaves 8 more second place teams who have to play each other in 4 matches. Tonight happens to be the first one.

South Africa look poor, I dont think they've had a genuinely good team since the one that won AFCON in 1996.

    Thank you.

If had been first v second for the respective groups tonight it would have been Mexico v Canada which I guess would be undesirable too for 2 hosts to play each other.

Didn’t see the very slight touch at first.

Would’ve been interesting to see what the call would’ve been without it.
