Just to mention that Cash and Glasspool were knocked out in the quarter finals of the Men's Doubles yesterday. Understandably overshadowed by King Arthur.
Shame they couldn't defend their Wimbledon title but as I've posted further up the thread their form has been inconsistent (and that might be a polite way of putting it) this season so not a great surprise.0 -
agree. His mental attitude and calmness is amazing as is his defensive play and accuracy. Very impressive and hopefully he'll have success on other surfaceshoof_it_up_to_benty said:Can't see Fery beating Zverev on grass but we can only hope. Zverev should be able to overpower Fery but Fery's superb fitness and defensive talents should put him in with a shout.
Fery's attitude is one of his main strengths - doesn't seem to get fazed by the attention he is getting. Very level headed and grounded.
Grass may prove to be his best surface but time will tell.

I wonder how many male tennis players gave up playing, when young and in favour of other sports (or their regulatory body made that decision for them) because they thought they were going to be too short in height to make it to the top. Someone like Dan Evans (5' 9'') has had a fairly decent career but never hit the heights (excuse the pun) and his stature and ability to dominate because of that must have been a hindrance.
Ken Rosewall (5' 7'') and Rod Laver (5' 8'') came from another era and the likes of Gaston Gaudio (5' 9'') and Michael Chang (5' 9'') won the French Open but I can't think of any others to win a Grand Slam in the last 50 years of that sort of height and certainly not on any surface other than clay.
Fingers crossed, that Fery changes that perception and becomes an inspiration to others though it will, of course, be an astonishing achievement should he do so.3 -
He said he had to develop other parts of his game because of it. I He seems to have a very good all round game though and still serves aces even if he doesn't have a Zverevesque serveAddick Addict said:I wonder how many male tennis players gave up playing, when young and in favour of other sports (or their regulatory body made that decision for them) because they thought they were going to be too short in height to make it to the top. I think Agassi was about 5.10.What Arthur has to somehow do to have a chance is get the ball in play, and keep the rallies going.he will have the edge in speed and agility, and possibly patience,a big ask,but Zerev does have lapses and does get a bit touchy when he is under pressure.Still when was the last time we had a mens semi final to look forward to,cheers Arthur whatever happens.PrincessFiona said:

Confident start from Fery and it's Zverev making all the mistakes. 1-1 in games but a hold to love for Fery.1

Wimbledon is to tennis as The Masters is to golf. Full of tradition and nothing changes especially when it comes to the all white attire. Great to see.0

Also fantastic when his back is against the wall. Think he needed to be broken and then get himself wound upAddick Addict said:Fery is so quick across the court1 -
Fery having to work hard. No easy points.0

Must be challenging to have never faced a sere as good as Zverev's
As much as other players will get to know how Fery plays, he will aslo imporve as he gets used to and adapts to the top players0 -
I think I'm more nervous than Fery is!1

Zverev has a huge advantage on serve.0

Annoying, isnt it? And his serve ramps up a notch further when he needs it tohoof_it_up_to_benty said:Zverev has a huge advantage on serve.0 -
Zverev clinical on the tiebreak unfortunately0
-
Ouch, 7-0 tiebreak. Shame, as Fery had done so well to break back in the main set.
Uphill battle from here. Would love Fery to beat Zverev though - not just because Fery is British either.1 -
Fery has pretty much not got to make any mistake, hang in there and force Zverev into making some. He did so well to take him to a tie break, but has made a few unforced errors - like Zverev's volley just now on the first point of his service game.North Lower Neil said:Ouch, 7-0 tiebreak. A very tall ask0 -

Arfur struggling with the big stage? finding problems with stuff he needs to shut out0

What are you supposed to do against a 100+mph forehand?0

Oh was a standalone comment to yours. That said, he loved the cameras and crowds in the previous two rounds. Think he's just being outclassed, no shame in thatEugenesAxe said:

yeah as Henman just said like boxers from different weight divisions, Fery's first serve is more like second serve, other than his speed he doesn't have a weapon. 1 -
Not with the big stage. But not being used to playing a player of Zverev's ability - that should come better with doing it more and learning.EugenesAxe said:Arfur struggling with the big stage? finding problems with stuff he needs to shut out
I think the matches up til now are starting to take their toll - he's not playing as well1 -
He's got plenty of weapons, just not one huge one, is very quick and has a good all round game. Tim Henman is being unnecessarily critical. Andrew Cotter is much much objective and I prefer Todd Woodbridge to Henman, who I think has issues that he only made it to the semi.EugenesAxe said:

Zverev is playing the best I've ever seen him at WImbledon - his confidence is sky high after the French0 -
This is the tennis equivalent of a top side playing a non league side in football.
Arthur has done really well to get to this point but the class of a grand slam champion is beginning to show and he has an uphill struggle1 -
It feels like when we played Southampton at home

HIs pace reminds me a bit of De Minaur (but different body shape) - he has similar issues again the tall, big hitters and he's 6 foot. Been in the top 10 a while but not made a GS semi0
