Keeping politics to one side, she was definitely a character.
Her opinion of Michael Howard always made me chuckle.

RIP. I think her catholic beliefs drove her politics and convictions. She was a character and will be remembered for her performances on Strictly. I was a bit shocked as she was on Jeremy Vine's show not that long ago. I think she did things her way and will be missed even by those who did not agree with her politics.1

She was my MP for a while, odd in a very British way. After successfully defending her seat she travelled around on a flatbed truck with a loud hailer thanking her constituents. We snuck up behind them on a fire shout and when the two tones went on I think she nearly had a heartattack.
On a serious note I respected two things about her, the fact she always took zero expenses from the public purse and the fact she always stayed true to her principles and beliefs, like Robin Cook. A lot of our current crop could learn from that.16 -
A conviction politician, which posters of all political hues typically appreciate on this forum.A big fan of Doner Kebabs, which somehow made her a bit more normal.2

Sad news even if she and I have very different views.
When I worked in the Revenues Department of one of the local councils, she was often in contact and was a very formidable lady.
She did have an amusing side, especially on Strictly.1 -

A great debater, who always backed up her arguments with facts based on her principles. she always made you think, which is what a debater should do. She will be a big loss to the House of Lords. Unfortunately not many (any?) current politicians have these qualities. RIP and strength to her family and friends.2

Eccentric and dotty, a bit of a showoff (like 'Boris' perhaps), nevertheless she had some good ideas. Of course, the dotty side of her personality meant that her ideas were never taken too seriously.
She brought a bit of fun to very dull and combative political landscape, but fun is never enough to bring good ideas to fruition

I have always remembered her for the documentary she did with the scumbag Mick Philpott in Derby (obviously before the house fire), about workshy benefits cheats like him and taking him to task, she walked all over him.6

She was against fox hunting and was an animal lover. I disagreed with her on most things but I think loving animals is totally decent.11

Like others have said, I didn't always agree with her but admired that she was honest and principled - something we could do with a lot more of in our current politicians. She didn't suffer fools gladly and wasn't afraid to tell people how it was - something a lot of people could do with.
I recall some documentary with 2 girls who didn't like the idea of having to work in some unfun, mundane job and her explaining reality to them!2 -
50 years in politics and my kids remember her for appearing in Sooty!11

She was patron of Buttercups Goat Sanctuary in Kent. Pretty sure she gave them her Strictly appearance money.
A women who took no sh1t and loved animals, makes her a top gal imho.
