Whenever murder happens in our political spectrum I find it deeply unsettling and troubling - whoever it is. All round worrying times we live in, but lets wait and see how the investigation unfolds.
Without wanting to add to speculation its being suggested on various social media that the attacker was known to her so dont think we can assume its political in any way.
    it still could be

Just seen this. Ann Widdecombe was not a politician O had much common ground with, but this is awful.
    RIP

Even if you didn't agree at all with her view and politics, some of the comments I have seen are appalling. From those who apparently care about people - seemingly only if they agree or depend on them

Been confirmed on the Beeb it wasn’t someone she knew

EDIT - apologies. Police say no confirmation that she knew them

“and it was "too early" to comment on whether or not the suspect was known to Widdecombe”

known to her is not necessarily political, was my point

Agreed. My original point was we can't just assume it is political purely because she's a former politician. Especially as the local press and social media are all reporting the person was known to her.

I'm wondering how the ambulance service found her - why were they there/who called them, the suspect or someone else?

Too many unseemly comments on here, disappointing.
    RIP Ann.

I wonder how 'known to her', if accurate?
  • As a dyed-in-the-wool Reformer, I genuinely hope this wasn't politically motivated. RIP Ann.

A 26-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe has since been released from custody and is no longer part of the police investigation, Devon and Cornwall Police say.

I wonder if she had a fall and banged her head, but the initial investigation suggested blows to the head.
I heard on the wireless this morning that Ann Widdecombe missed a Channel 5 thing last Wednesday, and that she was discovered in her kitchen.
I don’t know when and who found her.

I believe it was her gardener. I believe her family were contacted when she failed to show for the media event and they contacted the police - he must be local and went round to check on her?

There's a bit of a consensus going around that, because this suspect has been released, it possibly ain't a murder. I don't think that's how it ever works, let alone usually.. Pretty sure that you have a crime scene where everything points to murder, and that doesn't suddenly change just because the police arrested the wrong person.

It may sound obvious, but I've read and heard people suggesting the opposite a couple of times this morning. 🤷

Can we all cut the speculation on what may or may not have occurred, please. Let's let the police do their work and await for the facts to emerge. In the meantime, let's leave this thread for those who want to pay their respects. Thank you.
Totally agree. The man has been released without charge and is of no further interest which is exactly why the Police should be allowed to get on with their jobs. Certain political commentators were demanding to know absolutely everything about this person. That information could have put an innocent man in danger.

Ann was that rare animal, a politician of principle rather than party automaton.

    God Bless Ann and RIP.

This is a terrible event but yesterday showed that us speculating as to what happened isn't helpful. Patience is needed and the Police need to get to the bottom of it. It is hard to imagine how anybody could do this to a 78 year woman and it is understandable we want to know more but the truth needs to come out in its own time.

For the sake of her family and friends I hope this is resolved ASAP. Endless press and social media speculation must be very upsetting.

    RIP

Listening to LBC, Iain Dale who was a friend of hers is currently on the second hour of a show about her.

Genuinely a brilliant listen, a lot of laughs despite everything, I've learnt a lot about her that I didn't know as well.

Police believe she was attacked around 12:30pm on Wednesday. I think this reinforces why casual speculation is often so widely off the mark as to be entirely unhelpful.

I'm hoping the police complete and close this case as soon as possible.

RIP. Regardless of political outlook I respected her for being one of the very few politicians that said exactly what she thought. We could do with more of her kind now of all perspectives

speculation in many ways is pointless but the police will do their job regardless
