A bit quiet on here so down in the Sussex League Div 12 ( east) .Lolwray donned his whites for the first time properly in 2 years (career halted by a prostate op and dislocated finger) Sidley 2s amassed a totally of 260 odd ..in reply Bexhill 3s made a very good chase reaching 210 ish.

I am overjoyed to be back playing properly at 69 you just savour every game as you dt know if there's another injury or infermity to be had around the corner.

A useful 2-24 from 8 overs ..I am back properly! What's more I am playing with a decent mix of lads enjoyed Saturday immensely
Well done on still playing at your age

I umpired the top of the table Blackheath vs St Lawrence & HC game on Saturday. An excellent and unexpected win for the visitors, who chased down 243 with two balls and two wkts to spare. Blackheaths overseas Niaz batted aggresively and top scored with 80, then bowled fast. SLHC hung in though, putting on a hundred for the first wkt. They then lost both openers, and scored just 32 runs in the next 22 overs. They then lost Leaning and Stevens to LBWs, and the game seemed beyond them. However, both 16 year olds - Elworthy and (D) Curtiss - showed no fear and they needed 6 off the last over. A fine win. That takes them to the top, with Blackheath dropping to third.

The PL is incredibly tight this season. At the halfway stage there is just 12 points separating the top six clubs. Any one of those could end up taking the title.

If I were a betting man (!!!), I would favour Hayes who are just two points off the top and have a stack of runs in them with seven batters in the top 25 for those that have batted at least three times - Bryan (47.71), Harby (54.33), Blake (52.40), MacVicar (52.40), Low (47.33), Buttery (42.00) and Burrage (38.20). They also have six bowlers with an E/R between 3.60 and 4.53

Was told to look at the amount of disciplinaries in the KCL this year - absolutely loads !

Essex by contrast have only had one.

Is it that the behaviour is a lot worse in the KCL or has there been a clamp down ?

No clampdown in tier 1a, maybe lower down umpires are doing what they should?

There were some carried longer term suspensions carried over from last season but there are only half a dozen players currently suspended. There were 22 suspensions given in the first seven weeks of the season which, given there must be over 3,000 players playing each and every week in the KCL, means that less than one in every 1,000 players are suspended each and every week which really isn't that many. There have been five suspensions in the Essex League but they also have half as many teams and players.

All of that said I do believe that the behaviour of players over the decades has definitely deteriorated and there is an argument that more should be suspended. I'm afraid that the advent of "professionals" (by that I mean anyone being paid to play) in what is an amateur game has meant that those players have to justify their existence by whatever means they deem necessary.

One aspect that isn't addressed in the professional game and that has transferred to club cricket is the way in which appeals are made. How many players actually know that doing the things referred to below are an offence and how many umpires actually do something about that?

It is a Level 1 offence to:
    • Repeatedly appealing the same decision.
    • Appealing when the fielding team knows the batter is not out, specifically to pressure the umpire.
    • Celebrating a dismissal before the umpire has given a decision.
The Warning: Umpires have the authority to issue a first and final warning to the fielding captain for the entire team.
Penalty Runs: If the fielding team transgresses again after a warning, the umpires can award 5 penalty runs to the batting side and report the team for misconduct.
Dissent: Continued appealing after an umpire has firmly ruled "Not out" can be judged as dissent, leading to even stricter disciplinary actions under Law 41.

The coordinated and repeated appeals are one thing but it is the celebrating of a dismissal before a decision is even made that really infuriates me. Week in, week out, we see bowlers celebrating an LBW or catch without even turning around when appealing. That, in itself, puts pressure on the umpire but can also lead to dissent from the bowler and/or fielding side when the batter isn't given out. If no action is taken in the pro game, where is the incentive for it to be taken in club cricket?
If all players actually spent some time learning the Laws of the Game and umpires in the professional game started to enforce them then, just perhaps, we wouldn't have the sort of issues we currently witness in club cricket.

Speaking as the former head of discipline in the KCL aswell as the regional league I expected to get in total about 30 35 umpires reports per season..I'd say half of which were level 1 offences reported by panel umpires.

I must admit some of the posturing you see on the box doesn't help the game..I think Dennis Lillee started it

I assume all clubs still adopt the voluntary code ? It is important to note that clubs have already volunteered to suspend their player if a report is made .The league is empowered to increase suspensions, clubs are fined if a certain number of players fall foul in a season and if players are reported more than once they may face greater sanction .

There is nothing to stop clubs suspending players for poor behaviour with reports from an umpires/umpire.In fact as a former club chairman I did this on a number of occasions.

The problems with very poor discipline normally occur further down the ladder where maybe only 1 umpire or none are standing.

Quite a few very unsavoury incidents though over that period which will remain undisclosed

The only thing I would add is that I have the utmost admiration for the panel umpires and how they were managed .in fact anyone who gives up their afternoon in the sun/rain/wind to uphold the laws and see fair play has my utmost support and respect.

I've seen some incredible scorecards in my time but the one below from today's game between Willingdon CC 1st XI and Crowborough CC 1st XI in Div  7 East of the Sussex League has to be right up there.

The chap I feel sorry for is Michael Twain who is due to face a disciplinary hearing next week with the Willingdon Board for slow scoring in only hitting two boundaries in the 48 balls he faced.

Further deep down in the bowels of the Sussex League Sidley 2s faced their closest rivals 1066 CC ( sounds like a band)
I had a quite remarkable spell of bowling .My first three overs went for 16 .I then took 4 wickets for no runs off my next 5 .I was on a hat trick twice .I finished with 4 -20 from 9 overs
We won quite comfortably chasing 154 with 5 wickets to spare meaning the league is now ours to lose now .
Sport is not always like this but no matter what level and what age its great to enjoy some success as "the lows are many "

I umpired the Dartford vs Sandwich Town Championship game. ST won the toss and as expected batted. A slow solid foundation allowed them to reach 295-4, with Rory Smith getting to his hundred in the final over. Brother Alex then reduced Dartford to 2-3, and 20-6 with a fivefer. Dartford rallied with some lusty lower order blows but were all out for 113. The wicket played well, but the outfield at Hesketh Park is awful and reminiscent of 1976!

I had a busy weekend - Hayes vs Lordswood in the KCL Premier division on Saturday and then Tunbridge Wells vs Reigate Priory in the ECB National Club knockout yesterday.

Lordswood have been rocked by injuries to two of their best players - Callum MacLeod and Linden Lockhart - both to knee injuries. With Ed Taylor (67) as captain, they scored 238 against Hayes on a decent deck, but it did look 30-50 short IMO. Hayes lost an early wicket, but then controlled the game, winning with more than ten overs to spare.  Will Harby scored 68 and Will MacVicar 95 (out trying to get his ton when only 8 were required for the win).

Tunbridge Wells were much changed for their cup game, with five missing from the "usual" Saturday team, mostly batters. On a poor pitch (used in the 2's game on Saturday as well), the youthful Reigate recovered to post 210 in their 40 overs. George Ealham batted beautifully to score exactly a hundred, getting there with a single off the last ball of the innings. Wells lost wickets regularly, and despite some lusty blows, never looked like getting any closer than they eventually did, losing by 45 runs (36.3 overs).
Despite missing MacLeod and Lockhart, Lordswood managed to scrape home in the final over by beating Bexley by 2 wickets yesterday in the National Cup.

The less said about the game I watched on Saturday the better! Holmesdale scored 381-5 against a much changed Bickley side from last season who, in turn, replied with 178 all out. The only positive was that Seb managed to pop up late in the game to see two of his friends from his time at the DLCA in Australia - Nathan Khelawon and Ollie Chaplin - who scored 115 and 39 respectively for Holmesdale.

I also see Rilee Endersby bowled well on his debut with 4-28 off 10 overs.
Yes, Lordswood did well against Bexley, and those who batted OK on Saturday did so again on Sunday.

I understand Holmesdale's score was the highest BP have ever relinquished in a KCL game!

Rilee has bowled well so far for CWK; I think he's a decent bat too, but he hasn't had much of a chance in the two games he's played so far...

Three of Seb's clubmates from Adelaide are over here for a couple of weeks. They met up with Seb and all four decided to watch a fifth member of their side, Rilee at CWK.

Unfortunately, Rilee was a bit disappointing. He opened the batting and scraped together 122 off 119 balls. Then he took 5-32 with the ball and also held two catches.

Not a bad day for the boys to see their mate play. He was probably just playing to the crowd though!

Seb was almost pressganged into going but, sadly, he was already committed to working this week. One of the "Aussies" is actually English and was Seb's flatmate for two winters out there but who has now settled in Australia.

Alfie Peck of Hayes has had rather a good weekend.

In yesterday's KPL match against Blackheath, he returned figures of 10-1-29-4. Today, in the semi-final of the Kent League T20 comp aagainst Bexley, his figures were 4-0-6-2 and in the final against Tunbridge Wells it was 4-0-8-4, making today in the T20 in total 8-0-14-6 and for the weekend 18-1-43-10. These aren't the wickets of average players either.

Alfie is many batters worst nightmare. He's not particularly quick but moves the ball both ways and with the keeper standing up gives nothing away in terms of width or length. Something England have seen a bit of in recent times against Australia and New Zealand.

I have been following this obsessively for the last 24 hours. Absolutely incredible stuff. It is cheating plain as day and I hope club, fielder, keeper, basically all their players have the book thrown at them.

Yes it's been all over social media and even reached The Grade Cricketer podcast. There are some incredible stats which have shown that when the slip, Devine, plays, the keeper has taken 39 catches in 13 games as opposed to 5 catches in 7 matches when he hasn't.

Sadly, the keeper is going to be tainted by all of this. He's only a young lad who looks good and who took 8 catches in one innings but people will always question how many of his victims were legitimate ones.

I said in my previous post that the keeper should be shown some leniency because he looks very young but, having checked his stats, he's about 22 so I take that back.

The irony of all of this is that Devine, the slip, is actually a keeper by trade. There again, it would be very hard for him to click his fingers with gloves on let alone catch the ball too!

The slip has been given the nickname of Clicky Ponting.
