How on earth did we beat Ipswich 3-0 with that line up? Macca, Bell at wing back , Doc and Cov , Tanto up front . FrighteningSDAddick said:
A well deserved defense of Coventry. I agree I think he gets slated far too much. He is limited at certain things, but what he does, getting into pressing lanes, breaking up play, retaining possession, he does well. And as I mentioned in my post, I do think he still has another gear to go up.Garrymanilow said:If there's any greater indicator of how progressively more deranged football fans get over the close season it's talking about a midfielder who was part of the squad that survived that season and going from 'we should sign an improvement on that player' to 'we are guaranteed to get relegated if he plays'. I was thinking about some of our best results last season; Blackburn, Coventry, Birmingham and Hull at home, Ipswich, Boro and Leicester away, Conor Coventry started all but two of those and played in all except the Hull game. He's a decent player who we need more competition for and there will be games where he's more or less suited depending on who we play. He's not some bargain bin Matt Smith we picked up in desperation. Football fans are getting so much weirder every year about their own players
It's worth remembering he was hurt from around the turn of the year with a hip injury, which is part of why we got Coady in. I thought in the first half of the season he looked to be at the standard necessary, and I've not seen much since that to make me believe he's anything other than a bottom half Championship midfielder. Which is, coincidentally, what we are.
I think Chalobah could be better than Cov. I also think Cov as a broader range of passing than we've seen from him--which he's shown glimpses of in pre-season. But I think Chalobah and Coventry as competition for a spot, and maybe deployed as a defensive two on ocassion, represents good squad strength and depth for where we are.
Combine this with Mesik/Bell/Edwards at LB, Ramsay/McNamara at RB, a litany of CBs, and Godden, Leaburn, Kelman, Mbick up front and TC/Grant/Alli on the LW and we have some decent ability and depth in certain areas. We obviously know we need another 8 and a RW. But you can see this squad taking shape and I think it's one that, if we stay healthy and if we adapt well to a new system of play and if we continue to see improvements from some key players like Coventry, Leaburn, Kelman, TC (if he stays) Koumentio, and Ramsay, then I think we could push for kind of 12-15th, which to me would be a big success.
There is still a decent amount of upside in this squad, both from younger players/players newer to the level like Leaburn, Mbick, TC, and Kelman, but there's also upside in terms of health for the likes of Burke, Chalobah, and Bell--all of whom are undoubtedly Championship players when fit. But unlike last season, we have cover for those three, just as we have cover for the young players, which to me might be the biggest improvement for this squad.3 -
This was the only match my eldest son attended last season. He's never seen us lose. He always claims that he is controlling the match with his mind, and tells me not to worry. Ipswich away was the first time that I actually began to wonder if he really does exercise some kind of mental mind power over events.msomerton said:

Can't work out if this is a massive whoosh or if chatgpt is one step ahead and knows Holsgrove is signing 😂arny23394 said:

He is looking very good but let’s remember it’s only Cheltenham.10

What a lovely player to watch. We need to rotate him to keep him fit.7
-
Not bad, in fact bloody classy2
-
Have to say my heart sank when I saw we had him on trial, given his last stint at Wednesday and injures. Guess I'm Mr. Idiot today.10

Got out-muscled once....apart from that, superb1
-
Absolute miles between him and the rest of our centre mids. A dominant ball player and exactly what we’ve been crying out. Keep him fit and he will be the difference maker for our season. Get someone alongside him that is at his level and this season is comfortable.10
-
Hopefully mwamba can be a capable understudy and we get some one else alongside him.Ran the show for the first 45, for the second half match fitness probably came into play and they likely found a way to keep him out of the game.2

Very much looked like a player who hadn't regularly completed 90 minutes in years. Looked so good in that first half but he was absolutely spent the second. I can see why Jones left him on to try and force more fitness into him but we'd better get that new CM in sharpish because I don't think we'll be seeing any Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday runs out of Chalobah and he's shown what a different a player like him can make7

Or maybe just needs to build up his match fitness?Garrymanilow said:Very much looked like a player who hadn't regularly completed 90 minutes in years. It's a issue when you are both trying to build up match fitness in a player AND you're also trying to protect them.crookester said:

For the last 2 years, was Chuks ever truly match fit?8 -
Really impressed with Chalobah, really need to keep him fit. A level above everyone else

Said it many times now, and I've been saying it since he was about 16, but when he's fit he's mustard. Brilliant first half. Kind of tired second half but that's to be expected. Coventry alongside him providing some running looked a very promising double pivot. Lovely burst forward for the second goal as well.6

I’m trying to not go over the top with excitement as we’ve been here before many times, and we know he’s injury prone, so in the back of your mind you’re wondering , how long will he last?
First half he was outstanding, I remember not so long ago , we had Bakinson who scored and looked really good for about 3 games, and then tailed off.
If he can play like that every week, we’d have some player on our hands.

He has always been an excellent player, according to Wiki he was playing for Chelsea reserves when he was still a schoolboy. If he could ever maintain a top level of fitness he would not be playing for us. NJ needs to take a softly softly approach with him but I'm sure he knows that.4
-
Know someone who was tasked with marking him for Southampton academy and he still says he's the best player he's ever played against. Couldn't get near him.9
-
He purrs along like a classic car running the midfield. We all know they can breakdown, just hopefully not too often.6
-
He wasn't but it seemed like Chuks' body had shutdown by then. I don't know if Chalobah is at that point.killerandflash said:
