I think this formation and style of play will actually suit Conor Coventry better.Bell was moving into midfield and Jones and Koumetio pulled wide allowing Coventry to assume the quarterback role. He couldn’t do that when we played a three at the back.
I’m not saying he is the perfect solution for that role but it may allow us to see him play to his strengths more.21 -

Lots of positives. Chalobah being the biggest.
But also thought Billy looked like he’d played 100 games for us with Jones at the back. Very promising.9 -
Thought all the new players did well, we looked like we’d score with every attack first half
Very slight concern that Lloyd doesn’t look quite at home in a 2 as opposed to a 3 but I’m sure it will be fine
Poor goal between the keeper and whoever was marking their fella, would be so good to nick a decent prem keeper on loan move Mannion back to number 2 and ditch the flapper 🤞10 -
Excellent first half.
Very rocky for about 30 mins in the second.
Very professionally played out last 15 minutes.
Chalobah outstanding in the first half. Keep him fit and we've got a player.
Mannion really not doing himself any favours today with that performance.
Nice to progress past the first round for once.6 -
On Kaminski, suspect it’s just the fact it was a cup game.
Mannion and AMB were the duo for League Cup games last season. Kaminski missed both games against Stevenage and Cambridge.
Expect him to be in goal next Saturday.9 -
Excellent first half then a wobble let them get a goal and take the game to us for 20 mins or so. We then regained composure and ultimately won without a lot of fuss. Campbell and Alli looked good, some great moments from Carey but he does need to see a pass more often. Chalobah superb first half, tired in the second. Lloydy not as comfortable in a 4. Good workout and promising signs ahead of Derby.3

We looked good for the most part and I do like the formation but will it work against Championship sides . We will soon find out .The keeper situation is a little worrying. We could do will a goalkeeper that commands his box and neither Mannion or Kaminski seems to be able to do that .2

Chalobah was a cut above the rest on the pitch for the first 45. Tailed off 2nd half but so did the whole side. Really impressed with him. Hope he can stay fit.I like Koumetio too, thought he looked quite assure and is a commanding figure.Was great to see some pace on both sides too.Essentially an extra tune up, ahead of Derby next week, but some positives for sure.5

Apart from Mannion, was impressed by that performance albeit against a pretty average team. Chalobah is class, we need to keep him fit. He ups everyone’s game and is so intelligent. Two more in before Saturday 🙏🏻5

First half good, second half professional.
Said it on the match thread, but thought Chalobah was excellent first half, as was Coventry. Coventry winning the ball back and playing forward passes. Chalobah with an instant touch and good vision, plus the ability to drive forward or break up play. We might just have found our (for now, at least until Chalobah gets hurt and/or we get another #8 in) double pivot.
Another week where TC spent stretches of the match looking like our most dangerous player. He really looked so good on the left. Grant might just need to get used to playing on the right.
Carey looked good, even if I sometimes question his decision making, he did have a goal and an assist. Good goal and good pressing from Godders. Solid from McNamara. I thought Bell looked like he was still adapting to the inverted fullback role. I think he'll do well there, he looks after the ball very well and can pick a pass at times. It's just going to be an adjustment.
There's a great baseball expression, a player "looks good getting off the bus" which means he really looks the part, even if he doesn't play the part. Ivan Mesik looks good getting off the bus. But he also looked very tidy at both fullback spots.
Two goals from pressing, one from the counter. I think you see how we're going to look to play. Second half we looked a bit leggy, a bit over the whole thing, a bit after the Lord Mayor's show. But last 10 I thought we kept the ball well and the game very well could have ended about 6-2.
Lastly, I hope today kind of bursts the Will Mannion bubble a bit. He looked dodgy under the high ball and his distribution, particularly short distribution, wasn't great. I think he's a very good League One keeper. I think he's an okay lower end Championship back up. But I feel like some of the criticism of Kaminski goes over the top and you can see today why Mannion doesn't start.
Only League Two opposition, but I thought today provided a good blueprint.25 -

Wasn't that long ago we were losing to Cheltenham at The Valley. We've come on a lot since then.20

You rarely get the full package with Charlton do you? That warm glow of total dominance.
It's something we are well used to over the seasons. Lot's of good things today but also the usual naff stuff, just to keep us on our toes.

We'll have stiffer tests but lots to like about that. What a pleasure to have class like Chalobah around, even if he fades after 55-60 minutes. Coventry looks like a useful partner too. And all the new signings looked ok or better
Way less lumpball than much of last season. Who knows we might see some football this season6 -

A really encouraging first half once we settled into it, with Chalobah imperious in midfield and our pace and movement up front causing Cheltenham no end of problems. Three excellent goals and it could very easily have been more, as we totally outclassed the home side.
The second half was, unsurprisingly, lower key and we conceded a really poor goal from a corner - I've no idea what Mannion was doing and, whilst I'd like to see it again, the same question might also be asked of Lloyd Jones. We then seemed to go into panic mode and could have conceded another before fears of shitting the bed were assuaged as we we got a grip and regained control of the game. The substitutes, especially Leaburn, gave us fresh energy and impetus and we could easily have added to the scoreline in the last 10 minutes, when we kept possession very well and forced Cheltenham's goalie into a couple of good saves. Alli had a few good runs, Mesík looked solid and it was good to see Collins Sichenje back out there.
All in all, a very satisfactory evening's work.6 -

Chalobah was the shining light, wasn’t as impressed by KAG as others. Thought Carey did well but I don’t think he’s gonna that effective against better opposition. McNamara looked steady.
Hard to tell cos Cheltenham are a poor side but we won so there’s that.

Eh, we were 0-3 up against a League Two side in the first competitive match of the season away from home. And I would say it was more of a 5-10 minute stretch than a 20 minute one, though I'd have to watch it back. I think there are enough mitigating circumstances that I wouldn't expect to see us do that very often in the league. Good performance, was pleased how we took the sting out of it after their 10/15 of pressure

Didn’t see the game but surprised to read Mannion punching rather than catching as I’ve always regarded his coming and catching crosses as his main strength.11

Some of that distribution from Mannion had me shouting at the tv. Have to say I've missed it, onwards and upwards.3
