Good to see the ball on the floor a lot more - such a better team when the ball is not in the air for the strikers to fight for.
Chalobah a cut above & notable mentions for Carey & McNamara. Back 4 steady but nothing special.....2nd half we resorted to type and just glad Cheltenham didn't get a 2nd when on top.
A bit disappointed with Grant. Thought he had more about him & really only showed what he could do with one run in the first half. Also dont think he is suited to being on the right. But then said last week & on the match thread that TC is wasted on the right. No idea how NJ is going to sort that problem.
And finally. One slice of humble pie being eaten - I quite like the purple kit !7 -
Good performance, not bothered we took our foot off the pedal as that happens when you're 3-0 up. Good to see us playing football and players driving forward.2

Realistically, the next stage of "evolving" the squad (assuming we survive long enough, which I do believe we will) will definitely require upgrades to the goalkeeper role. Neither Mannion nor Kaminski are at "top Championship club" level. But neither are they so bad that we could prioritise them over all the much more immediate issues this summer.sam3110 said:

They adequate at best, but adequate will have to do.16 -
A very good first half performance then second half Cheltenham gave it a go, chasing lost causes and hitting balls in to see if something would drop for them, they didn't create too much, Mannion pulled off a decent stop with their one shot on target. It looks now like Nathan Jones has more options, one more bit of quality in midfield and a right wing back and he probably will be fairly happy, a few more to leave as well, I would have thought.2

Between 20th-45th min we looked simply a class above Chalobah ran the midfield for us.
Thought TC looked dangerous and Billy looks so assured at the back.
A week to go until the league season starts and we avoided getting knocked out in the first round of the cup.
Happy with that. Onwards and upwards 🔥10 -
First 15 took time to get into the game but once we did we looked excellent .
Chalobah was different class first half along it has to said Coventry who got the overall MOM .. some good goals Godden , class Carey tidy finish and a super effort from Campbell who was also very unlucky when he hit the bar both chances created by Coventry .. yet again it was TC final ball today in at least 4/5 times that let him down .. if you look
at Alli one chance to create lovey cross right in Carey head …….At the back “ Billy “ we have a real star , and McNamara was very good . Jones still
dont look happy in a 4 and Bell not a left back and in goal well Mannion performance today puts an end to that debate

Good final top up for fitness. Good to see those getting their first goals of the season. Chalobah looks decent if staying fit. Time will tell if the new formation will work waith our players!0

Good game management by the team in the last 15 minutes where the passing was very good.
Playing a league 2 side in the cup doesn't have much bearing on a championship season but there were many positives.
I didn't expect the class act Chalobah to play 91 minutes but to see a midfielder who along with Carey, can run with the ball going forward was great to see.
Carey with one goal, one assist and two good saves from their keeper reminded me of his best form of 25/26.
TC was good on either wing and Grant had some good runs in the middle of the park after a quiet start.
Sterner tests too come but more minutes in the legs and to win a cup game is a bonus.

I think the only real issue with Mannion today was the fluffed ‘punch’ clearance where I suspect he was trying too hard to make amends. Otherwise (apart from the save) he didn’t have a huge amount to do.sam3110 said:

I respectively disagree, it wasn't Campbell being let down by crosses, there was no-one at the end of them. I don't know why you always have it in for him, but he was one of the best players on the pitch today and was everywhere, running his socks off. A game of four quarters; bad, very good, very bad, good.
And a display to please everyone.
The optimists will have liked the three goals and that we surged forward in numbers. Chalobah was very good and the other debutantes also did well. Plenty to look forward too.
The pessimists will have enjoyed the beginning of each half when we looked half asleep and could have been in trouble v a better side. Plenty to complain about.

The standout team performances across pre season, and today, were the first half at Colchester and the first half today - the common factor appears to be Chalobah.3

McNamara had a very solid debut.3 -
At the game. In the first ten minutes we gave the ball away three times in dangerous positions with Mannion, Jones and I think Bell all at fault. That was concening as a Championship side would most likely have punished those errors. There wer a few more similar lapses later but after that initial ten minutes, we were excellent in that first half, Chalobah showing skills I haven't seen from a Charlton player in many a year.
Pleased with the other newcomers as well, especially Billy, though Karlan only showed glimpses of what we know he can offer.
The second half was a bit disappointing and shows fitness levels still aren't what they should be, but we finished the game professionally and forced the Cheltenham sub keeper into some good saves at the death.
Promising, but the real stuff starts next week.1 -
Happy to see Sniffer dog score and what a finish, been so unlucky with injuries, buzzing for him.8

If TC had the oerfect end product every time he gets in a promising position, we wiukd score 5 or more goals a game.
the point is he gets into promising positions so often especially played as a left winger. I hope he and Grant can learn to influence the game from the right as we will be lucky to get a right sided specialist as dangerous1 -

Both looked more effective from the left.TC didnt know what to do with the ball when he got past his man on the right, aimlessly wandered into the middle1

I’m happy to put the Mannion performance down to having a shit game, it happens. But them punches and kicks over a season would kill us. Just hope he’s better than that.0

Only seen the 3 minute highlights but we looked eager to attack with pace, TC looked to be getting into good positions on the right and Grant nearly scored from that side too. Alli looked to have put in a good ball in at the end too that Carey nearly put away. Chalobah looked a cut above again. The defensive frailties mentioned here didn't get shown but I thought Mannion was weak for their goal. A nice performance to effectively round up preseason0
