We didnt look great... We didnt look terrible... We had a moment of defensive madness in the First Half which'll have annoyed Nathan no doubt... But again I'll repeat... Our heads, they didnt drop for once - We didnt look outstanding going forward but we didnt retreat and let Derby continue their momentum
The subs, even when Costello replaced Grant were interesting, and unpredictable, but fair play they worked
Sometimes it wont of course, but thats the nature of the beast that is the Championship
Onwards to the Battle of East London
This is definitely something I hope we continue to see, last season we were constantly trying to score one goal to hang on to and defend - if we went behind or conceded an equaliser we didn't have the spirit or the nous/quality to go again.

This time we had a bad spell, put it behind us and scored twice. That has to be a good omen.

Also thought that Mannion did pretty well, coming from an admitted non-fan of him.

First half we huffed and puffed, Godden couldn't get into the game, we were also at times far too open.  Second half we steadily improved, Leaburn panicked their defenders and used his strength, whilst chasing things down.  Can Leaburn do that consistently if starting though?  Rankin-Costello played some very intuitive balls forward as well. Chalobah does the inventive stuff well but he really battles as well.

    Good win boys.
Nice to start the season with a fit Leaburn.
Showed plenty of pace and strength.

Loved that! We looked much more dangerous than last year and more solid that I feared we would be. Think we need to play better against other teams, but I also think we will play better as we bed the new system in.
    Overall, very promising!

A goal down and we still win. Not often we do that.

    Great start to the season!
Fantastic.  More of -  Absolutely brilliant!!👏🏼

I don’t really care about either of these things because we won, but…
    1) I’m not sure what the rules are on abusive language to the ref, but that Derby player who got booked at the end clearly, repeatedly and aggressively called the ref a c**t to his face. Maybe @PeterGage can shed light, but I was under the impression that that should be a red.
    2) Can someone explain to me why Swansea and West Brom are above us? Last time I looked, C was before both S and W in the alphabet. 🤪

I like Tyreece starting on the right and then him and Grant swapping as a strategy. The defenders get comfortable with their assignments for twenty minutes or so and then whoever’s on the left gets slapped in the face with reality when TC runs at him. It works.
Swapping wingers during a game used to be a thing you know…. Back in the day, not a difficult game football🤷🏻‍♂️
  • GET IN !!!!!

    Fantastic second half.

We were crap for about 15 mins from the 15th-30th minute. Other than that I thought to a man we were superb. TC was great and all the subs came on and made an impact. Absolutely buzzing with that. Nothing better than a come from behind win (oooh matron).

    Derby got taken from behind.
  • We looked really solid today against a half decent Derby side. Great result and start to the new campaign.
  • Great result.

Conor Coventry my man of the match for all the unrecognised work he put in today. But Leaburn ran him a close second for a super sub appearance.

TC is an enigma. Some bad decisions in the first half and then a super goal. Tell Preston we want £10 million for him now!

Just one moan. Why on earth was Alli left to mark CBT on his own? That nearly cost us.

Really looking forward to the West ham game now!

Wasn't sure I was quite ready for football to be back yet after the WC but great start to the season - completely solid performance other than that 20 minutes spell.

I really hope TC kicks on and has his career season as he is so fun to watch when he gets in a rhythm like the end of the 1st half after he moved to the left.

Broadly all the new signings were solid enough. Not sure quite what Karlan's best position is but definitely has quality.

I guess main concerns is still that central midfield, Chalobah looks a slightly better version of Coventry but think we need someone with more legs/bit quicker in there. Also Mannion but it does seem they are aware of that and looking so hopefully that's wrapped up soon.

JRC’s ball for our second was absolutely sublime. Not the first time he’s made excellent defence splitting passes either, I think he could be a bit of a revelation in that number 10 role.

TC looks like he’s getting more involved in the “dark arts” a bit more which is good to see, showing defenders he won’t be bullied.

Leaburn looked like he wanted to run through brick walls, gave us a lot more going forward than Godden. Just wish he was a better finisher.

Only my opinion, but think we will be stronger starting Kelman (when fit) or Godden and having Leaburn as the finisher.

Were Derby singing “Charlton get battered everywhere the go” during the game? Silly pricks 😂 about the only time I heard them

So good to start the season off with a win and well deserved. Really happy that NJ's gamble on making us a more attacking side paid off, on this occasion at least - was a much better watch than most of last season.

TC was excellent once he switched to the left and Leaburn was great off the bench. His winner was a great strike which the keeper had no chance of stopping. As mentioned in the match thread, Leaburn seemed sharper and quicker than he has for some time.

Bell was okay but I can see him losing his place this season. Koumetio had a very good game as did McNamara, who even got forward well at times. Jones started poorly and was a major contributor to their goal. He then regained his composure, scored the equaliser and was imperious after that. Another promising cameo from Mesik, with a good run and dangerous ball flashed across the box.

Chalobah and Coventry both put in a shift in the middle and I thought Coventry was very good defensively, while Chalobah showed quality on the ball. Grant was a bit quiet but had some good moments, including the cross for the equaliser. He made some good runs that a better "10" than Carey would have found.  Carey did work hard but not much came off for him. JRC was a surprising but effective replacement.

We will lose to West Ham but I hope heads don't drop in the team or amongst the supporters as they are in a different league to the rest of the division.

Very enjoyable win, didn’t see it coming as I thought both teams were pretty even. Derby the better passing side but we just had that bit of quality in the TC finish.

On a side note, so many helmets in the north upper today and I usually sit there with the kids. Ended up moving at half time cos the missus could see me wanting to say something to the bloke behind me that took a dislike to a 16 year old next to me. Freak.
  • As always love the win, but also, that was a decent game of football to watch.

Even when we went 5 at the back we still had TC, Leaburn, Alli and JRC on so there were still outlets.

    Point 2)

Away win puts you above teams that only won at home.

Am i remembering right that Jones had a similar start last season where he made a mistake, then absolutely bossed it rest of the season?

Very solid performance for 75 minutes of the game. Neither side could have complained about a 1-1 but unlike most games last season it was us with a moment of brilliance to take the win. Not sure what they were moaning about at the end, ref let them get away with a huge amount throughout the game and pulled 8 minutes added time out of his arse.
