Sorry, I appreciate its the 1st game of the season, but it just wasn't good enough today.

At a bar the minimum you expect is for someone to take your order, your payment and give you your drink as quickly as possible.

Today was the opposite, people taking the wrong order, giving you the wrong drink, and not being able go pour a pint without a head on it that filled about half the glass, how much beer was wasted today by the staff not being able to pour a pint must have cost the club a fortune.

The food, despite it looking good in the 1st instance isn't something my kids are going to be interested in. Unless I read it wrong the waffle fries were topped with cauliflower?!?!? My kids would certainly not go near food ike that.

I read the comms from the club last night as if it was going to offer a faster service and more choice of beers, all I could see was a shocking service with the same options as last season, less the Dial lager which was off.

Thank god we won as the fans were in a good mood after the game otherwise there could have been riots.

Oh and dont get me started on  the lack of seats, people of an older age go there to guarantee a drink and a seat, we got there at 12.20 and it was pretty much standing room only.

Whoever at the club is in charge of monitoring the contract needs to have a serious chat before the Preston match.

£8 for a Peroni in the fans bar, young bloke serving it didn't have a clue how to serve it, froth and lager pouring down the side of the glass, told him to tilt it when pouring but he just carried on. Not the fault of the staff, but a bit of basic training, management should show them how to pour a pint.

My second pint tasted of cleaning fluid, they changed it and got another similar pint which they also changed for a different drink.

£4 for a bottle of Pepsi Max in The Fans Bar.

Paid £2.75 for a bottle of Cherry Pepsi Max in the Covered Upper.

Inconsistent menu and pricing despite the caterers being the same and usually offering the same range of food and drink.

Most of the frothing is down to the heat and the beer not being kept cold enough.  Not entirely down to the staff.

Had 2 beers, two Pepsi and two burgers. £60 👍🏻😂
  • Train fubars meant we couldn't go to our usual cheeseburger fries and drink for a tenner spot.  The chicken was fine, I guess 14 quid is probably about the going London rate 😜

Did enjoy the alternate journey of the tube from Victoria and the sights of the 161 😁

Aside from the giving money to the club argument why do people drink in the fans bar

Oak had no queues Jonny Robinson engaging with the fans and a nice atmosphere

For many it is easier and closer.

I drink miles away in the Radical which is cheaper and the service is better.

It's not for everyone but seeing more and more Charlton fans in there every week

Usually it's just because I think "we'd better leave the rose and get to the ground" forgetting it only takes 10 minutes, not half an hour.

Whilst I don't personally need a seat on the rare occasion I go in there, it always seemed to me that those massive round tables are way too big and very space inefficient.  Replace those with some regular pub tables and you'll get loads more seats in.

    Well where to start ?

Entered Crossbars @12.10 to discover the top end by the main doors was apparently set out for a disco ...acres of space, no tables or chairs but a kiddie's party set up in the window area. First thought was is Two Sheds back in the driving seat ? What time does the DJ start playing?

Progressed further into the area past the first bar to find a vastly reduced number of tables with chairs in place than usual in recent seasons. SO few that those who had entered in the first 5 mins of the Bar opening  had already claimed those on offer !!! Fortunately our pal
who queues before midday had managed to bag one for our number.

For those who query why fans choose to use this area pre ko, there are several reasons but for our group of approx 10 who attend every home match, this is the only place close to the Stadium itself where we're able to meet up at home games as we sit in different areas of the Ground. And with 6 of us in our mid to late 70s, standing to chat, drink & sometines eat for up to 2.5 hours before we take our seats in the Stands is NOT an option. There are no pubs locally close enough to The Valley where we could guarantee this arrangement week after week. End of. The alternative would be to park up around 2-2.30 & go straight to our seats, spending no money in the Ground whatsoever. For us, this pre match "ritual" is almost as important as the football itself as it is clearly for many others.

We rarely buy hot food in the Bar although the younger members of the group would regularly buy a portion of chips from the counter at the entrance end. Today, it was immediately obvious that there was no food on view in the usual area....hmm. Eventually, someone was told that the cardboard "sign" on our table ( where there was always a matchday menu in the past) was for the use of those with an iphone ( not us wrinklies) to view the food on offer & to order accordingly. In the 2.5 hours we were there this afternoon I saw no-one use this updated method . Why wasn't there something about this inovation in one of the numerous emails we receive from the club as matchdays approach? What an odd way to conduct  a catering operation ? I'd love to hear some feedback from anyone who dared to dip their toes into today's unexpected method ...Needless to say, we all went hungry & kept our credit cards safely in our pockets, unused.

Them there was the small matter of the bar itself & the reason many fans USE the Fans' Bar. With no Larry present ( great shame !) there was a cocktail "menu" on the bar itself. I stood behind a long term fan who was endeavouring to assist one of the young bar staff in making the drink that she had requested....It appeared that there was an actual recipe  on view but the process was lengthy, tortuous & , I believe, did not reach a particularly successful conclusion.  Whilst I stood ( patiently of course  ;) waiting my turn, several customers were seen to be having issues with the pints they'd been served ...Voices all around to be heard saying " You'll have to pour those 2/3/4  away & use a different pump - the one you used doesn't have any gas !" Cue puzzled young faces behind the bar & a distinct lack of management to save the day ....And it would seem that the situation barely improved from then onwards. From previous posts regarding the catering in general today, I'd venture that most present would give a mark of 8 out of 10 or more for the match itself but, if feeling generous or in hospitality of course, a possible 1 out of 10 for the unacceptable catering on offer at OUR football club.

If you're reading this, Mr Carter, please may I ask why there are so many on going consultations with Fan Groups of late with either insufficient guidelines as to their remit and/or members who do not have personal experience of USING  the facilities in question. Regarding the catering issue, I'd respectfully suggest that a detailed questionnaire with room for relevant responses is emailed/sent by post to everyone with a Charlton ID for their views and that the responses are collated on return as a matter of urgency with  conclusions announced within a time scale of, say 1 month, followed closely by a revised modus operandi. IMO, following today's start of a new season, to leave this unaddressed & in the unacceptable state we endured this afternoon, would be foolish as regular attendees may well vote with their feet. And surely that is not what the owners will want to learn....This has to be nipped in the bud to show the average supporter that their needs on a matchday are as important as those who are able to pay a deal of money in hospitality, as I'm certain you will agree.

I'm pretty sure that the Fans' Bar & the way it was operated last season was decent on the whole so why try to mend something that's not broken ?

Yes it was all a very poor experience today. V long queues and v slow service pre match in Fanzone and they ran out of most stuff. Had pre poured pints at the back but not seeming to serve them??

Despite that we still thought Fanzone in this weather might be a good place to meet after but it was closed. Missed opportunity?!

So reverted to Fans Bar - where after one round the pumps were no longer working because apparently no one had been down “in the cellar” changing barrels. I thought we had professional caterers?

Not quite sure how we’re meant to compete at average Championship revenue if the club can’t get its act together on this basic stuff.

Nail on the head, this is exactly what Gavin Carter spoke about during the week about our revenues being well below Championship average.

The irony of this as well is with the layout of the ground there is so much more potential to bridge this gap of lost revenue but year after year it's continued poor service just keeps leaving so much money on the table. I reckon we're probably only getting 70%-75% of potential income. All it takes is for one bad experience and people will take there money elsewhere.

Also The Valley is probably one of only very few grounds in the league where every home stand has either a lounge or corporate boxes along pretty much the entire length of each stand. And in addition to this we also have a Fan Zone out in the car park.

I know this is a bit of a running gag but with the set up at The Valley there really should be no excuse. Anyone who wants a beer and a burger should be able to get one.

Having known FF for many years I know that once she is on a mission God help the recipient. I only use the Fans Bar at half time to meet a mate who comes to the ground in a totally different direction to me. However Member no 99 of the Rad (yes really) went into the Fans bar at half time today expecting the promised improved facility but it was worse than the Watford game a year ago when it took feedback from fans to improve things and by the time of the Hull game it was seamless.  So back to square one again. Queud patiently as did most people, no lager. Polite young lady offered me Peroni instead. Neglected to tell me it was 8 quid until after I'd paid. So, over to you whoever the fans rep may be as I genuinely no longer have a clue. FF could drive me up the wall at times but at she had her members and fans general feelings at heart and had a point of contact along with a network. So whoever is taking on board fan advocacy, engagement, representation or just talking on board the feelings of the whole fan base. We're not retiring just yet. It may seem puerile that there is dissatisfaction over refreshments but if the Club are going to publically state they have made improvements when they have got worse then they should be held to account. North Upper staircases next. Good job we won...

Can’t say I’m surprised reading on all these comments on how bad it was yesterday. They never learn down there and especially after the complaints that came their way after the Watford game at the start of last season

If you are able to of course then find alternative arrangements for your food and drink before and afterwards. These comments from yesterday are exactly the reason I don’t buy anything in the ground

    Fans Bar

In the Meantime Fans Bar, a new way to order food to your table has been implemented. Web-based table offering will now be available, to help give supporters greater choice and convenience to order food to their tables, should they wish to avoid the queues. Food will be available on the app.

Food and drink retail operations have been assessed, and changes have been made in order to increase the efficiency of service across the stadium.

    • Enhanced beer offer – Improved refrigeration and draught technology to support the quality, consistency and speed of service of draught beer.
    • Faster service – Optimised kiosks, back-pour and fast-pour technology, upgraded beer infrastructure and new Fast Service Bars to reduce queuing times.
    • Improved EPOS – A new till system to speed up transactions and improve the customer journey and experience.
    • New food offerings – A new homemade sausage roll, improved hot dogs, increased choice of menu and the return of the Bahji Burger.
    • Sustainability – Drinks will be served in new club-branded Nopla packaging, that is 100% recyclable, to help the club be as sustainable as possible.
    • Seasonal range – An expanded offering across the concourses, including an enhanced winter menu.

Now that REALLY sums it up, clive. Well done you, ferreting out this crucial information that was posted up on the OS on ....drum roll...FRIDAY ( no actual time given)! Hands up if anyone else discovered this masterpiece ! A prize is on its way in the form of a incredibly rare portion of chips with NO additional accompaniment !!!!

Well. Now, when did we all receive the latest, state of the art email from our club trumpetting the option to "visit" the upgraded Family Stand ( but only if you have a ticket) and to make sure you obtain your matchday passport !!! Oh yes, Thursday 13th .

But where was the information about the wonderful new catering opportunities we could eagerly look forward to ...especially that reference to the "web based table offering" WTF? Pardon my French, Mr Carter but Fanny's ancient feathers are now severely ruffled & it's not a good look :s

So, unless you are a fan who worries they might miss something important ( like the points' categories for Spurs' tickets) & check the OS religiously several times a day , you'd have NO idea of the incredible catering upgrades on offer ! Ah, maybe that's WHY this was omitted from the most recent pesky email bulletin....surely not !  Could we have an undercover Spanner in the midst of our communication dept , gleefully disrupting the cascading of crucial info to the masses ? And encouraging concerning levels of discontent in SE7.

You really MUST log on & read the entire article posted up, although you will inevitably be disappointed that you missed the inflatable football darts, kick up challenges, craft decorating AND ...another drum roll....a spin to win challenge !!!! Bet you won't see those at The London Stadium . Oddly, although Mr F took his seat in Block F in the Curbs Stand soon after 2pm there was no evidence of anything of the kind. Specsavers, here he comes , alongside  yesterday's myopic ref.

Yes, I am angry.....and I believe most Addicks who want the best for both our club & its fans would agree that levels of incompetence/planning/communication ( that word yet again ) are sorely compromised at this time. Shouldn't preparation & planning be at the forefront of everything at a football club of our stature once the previous season ends as it is with the playing side of operations ? IF that's the case, then it was sadly lacking & it appears that there are far too many issues now that "others" might latch onto with the result of the "laughing stock" phrase not too far away( But not the lovely @Millwall Fan, of course ) We need to be proud of our club both on & off the pitch, don't we ?

So, what's the cunning plan now, guys ? Free drinks & food for all on the 29th ? A huge, grovelling apology from the club ?( I'd expect JR to volunteer for that ...) Guaranteed " We must & we SHALL ensure these kind of issues will not occur again under our watch"? And an invitation to Fanackapan Towers for an interview for the CEO post ?  :dizzy:

Of course not, silly old moo ! That would be everyone's worst nightmare...JR's already traumatised at the very thought !

Can't the club just have a training day for Bar staff? it wouldn't take long to teach them the basics, pouring a pint, changing a barrel, changing gas, using the EPOS; it would help keep things moving. I'll come and do it myself if the club want to cover my travel costs.

I suspect the issue is that a lot of the staff won't be working every week and the agency they're hired from should be doing the training

I'll be honest, for me, the football will always, always come first. I could not care less how good the catering is if Charlton lose, BUT, if I was a neutral, I would probably avoid the Valley.

I visited almost every Championship ground last season except for Boro and their catering services and general fan zones mostly put ours to shame, in particular Bristol City stood out for me, I even thought Millwalls seemed far better and spacious with more on offer.

I actually think we have a spacing issue, everything feels a bit crammed and that's without a sold out attendance every week, I doubt we could manage.
