Talk about personal choices, it’s called practice what you preach. Don’t waffle on about climate change every time it goes above 28 degrees and say “we need to change and do more” yet do nothing and go against everything you say.
Who is it you're accusing of "doing nothing"? And what is it that you do, that you think they should do too?
I'm referring to certain people who claim to be almighty and state CO2 is warming the planet which is fair enough but then decide to go on holidays and drive cars which is one of the main contributers to CO2 emissions. What is it I do? The answer is nothing because I don't believe the world is ending through climate change. What should they do? Again practice what you preach if you truly believe what you say about climate change then stop going on holiday stop driving cars, stop using fossil fuels.

This summer across the world has been very warm with lots of drought. This was predicted through El Nino a super el nino in fact, but again has been spun as climate change.
The effects of El Nino are exacerbated by Climate Change, it doesn't cause it.

Although it started in June, it is not expected to start affecting the UK until the Autumn. It isn't the cause of this year's extreme temperatures or drought. It may bring stormy, wetter weather from Autumn onwards and may make the end of winter colder.

El Niño’s influence on the UK is indirect because the UK’s weather is dominated by the Atlantic, not the Pacific. But strong El Niño events do shift global circulation patterns enough to matter.

Will it reduce our costs? No
Will it reduce (ironically) our carbon footprint by not moving it round the world? Hopefully?
Will it increase our energy security, which to me is the most important thing? Yes.

Also as another observation, a lot of people's views on saving the planet seem to be similar to how they view tax.

"Don't look at me, look at them!"
Today a No10 spokesperson said he was delaying the decision when last week it was looking likely he would. So doubt its nailed on. I actually think it's a political misstep, polling shows a majority of people against this despite the noise in the billionaire owned media and onnsocial media.

It wont reduce carbon footprint as it actually needs to be moved around more. We have to ship it to India (mostly) to be refined then sold on the global market. So also won't make any difference to energy security.

At the high Court appeal over the licenses to drill Rosebank and Jackdaw both the oil companies lawyers and and HMT's lawyers both agreed it would be tax negative due to all the additional subsidies and tax breaks required to make this commercially viable.

    https://www.upliftuk.org/post/rosebank-private-profit-public-risk

I personally wouldn't ban new drilling but I would end the subsidies and tax breaks for it as taxpayer money shouldn't go on negative externalities. That would render all of it not commercially viable.

They also accepted that it would make barely any difference to UK extraction. As this graph made from the data presented at the case shows it will take UK production from falling by 97% to falling by 95%. A 2%pt difference. The effect of that on glab markets is zero.

Dont think that last bit is fair at all and its pretty baseless. Plenty on here talk about what they do about this and no one has called on others to take any specific action so that's pretty disengenuous. Either you're looking for a reaction here or you fundamentally don't understand the problem.

El Nino usually doesn't really affect Europe, even when it's a super El Nino it doesn't have this level of influence over European weather patterns.

The record average temperatures in June and July this summer (nearly 3° warmer than the usual average) are a direct result of climate change, and have brought about a real concern that Western Europe as a whole will experience some of it's worst harvest numbers in decades, in some cases on record so far.

Exactly its been supercharged and intensified by record high surface water temperatures in the Pacific.

There is a reason El Nino events were basically never talked about in the UK and western Europe before - because we haven't really been impacted by them. The fact we are feeling it is unprecedented.

I was reading yesterday about howbthe first year after the El Nino event is usually the coldest in the cycle so next summer should be colder. But it is also likely to be the hottest first year of the cycle ever.

Again no one on this thread since it was revived in the last week or so has told anyone else what they should or shouldn't be doing with their personal choices.

The conversation has been focused on national and international policy. I don't practice international policy so it's quite hard to "practice what you preach" when you aren't prime minister.

So your argument doesn't hold at all.

As for the you do nothing claim here is a non-exhaustive list of things I have done and regularly do to effect change in this area. Do let me know what more you do that I can learn from.

    - don't eat meat
    - walk or use public transport as default
    - donate to climate organisations
    - support and volunteer at campaigns for environmental causes
    - have spent time volunteering at a coral restoration project and a marine conservation programme and continue to volunteer my time in an admin role for that charity
    - give my professional skills pro-bono to a couple of think tanks and pressure groups in this space who have the ability to influence government.
    - am in the process of installing solar and battery in my home. Have future plans in place for a heat pump.
    - holidayed in the UK or Europe by train. Even Sailed to where I was travelling post Uni.
    - have done renovation works to my house to passivehaus standards - the most environmentally friendly homebuilding standards
    - have changed purchasing and consumption habits initially cutting out fast fashion and amazon and the likes and now much more buying second hand and refurbished wherever possible and using certified B corps where not. Have my phone contract with Ecotalk whose profits all go to rewilding. Use Ecosia as my search engine who do the same. Am on a green energy tariff.
    - have rescued and restored and refinished multiple pieces of furniture that had been thrown away for myself and family and friends to give quality pieces a new lease of life.
    - religiously recycle
    - write to my MP regularly
    - have installed a large rainwater harvesting system with solar pumps and soaker hoses for my garden (posted about this a couple pages ago).
    - composting
    - growing my own vegetables

And quite a lot more that I have missed. Really excited to hear about all you do and see how I can add some to my list.

But once again. The problem is systemic. People do what they can within the system but unless the system changes we won't get real change.
Credit to you. I wish In had the will power to do half this list
    Ctrl C then Ctrl V
If you are somehow suggesting I copied and pasted that list from where exactly? Including typos and including stuff I've talked about on this thread as recently as yesterday and as far back as a couple of years ago then it confirms that you are the reason they still need "do not consume" warnings on bottles of bleach.

I'm also surprised you enjoyed Redskins image. I thought your mother had strong views on blasphemy? Wasn't she always right?

It's the sensible thing to do. Most sensible people know it. Apparently he's delayed it due to the heatwave ffs.

Were buying oil from Norways field right next to it, when we can have our own and revenue instead. This was done to death in the fuel shortages forum which I think was closed. It will also save thousands of jobs all over the UK... Now we do care about jobs dont we.

But was good to see a couple of posters who apparently care for our planet bragging about their toy cars filling the planet up with high co2 emissions on that forum.

Thanks for this. The bit I have bolded I couldn't agree more with, and the rest of what you wrote I found informative.

On the bit you said at the end, I disagree.

I do understand the problem, and when it comes to communication to the wider public, a lot of it is "optics." The more of a hard liner you are, the more you have to practice what you preach.

The more that you point the finger at everyone else, the easier it is for people to pull the hypocrisy card, the most devastating card in the deck in my opinion.

Practice what you preach, or shut up and let the scientists give it their best go.

I don't care if you're too poor to own an up to date car, or go solar, or any of those things, do what you judge others for, or fall back, and be a mere mortal like everyone else is.

My observation is that there's not much difference in how people like Chippy and ME14 live their day to day lives, but there's a huge difference in the preaching and self righteousness of it.

It usually a fair assumption that when someone asks you a question, 4 times, after you've given the answer the first time, that they and their cohorts  have a major issue understanding basics.

It's also a fair assumption that when someone asks you a question about resources when the topic in the box was about people, that they and their cohorts have a major issue understanding basics.

Especially after the second time of asking you tell them you are under no obligation to answer anything. Again not understanding of basics.

And when that happens it's best to assume all and move on.
It's usually a fair assumption that when someone repeatedly asks for information that they either can't find what you say you've sent or can't understand it. The best communicators work on the basis that in an adult world such problems are down to the sender and do their very best to set matters straight.

The fuss and blister you've made suggests to me that you don't want to answer because you know that if you do your position won't stand up to scrutiny. It would have been far easier for you to answer Emmy nicely than to put up a fight about it. Come on, it's a forum, why are you frightened of responding nicely?

It's a fair assessment Stig for people to understand the basics that you are not going to repeat your answer when you've already done it to my satisfaction  if you don't like the answer that's tough. Be an adult and move on. The question that was asked bore no relation to the original posters view. Why this individual was asking me I have no idea. Trouble making in my view.

I can stand any scrutiny,  had it for years here and then they get abusive as you well know. As demonstrated by rocky rad. And who am i facing scrutiny from, people who Google and post A1 generated posts all day long, who for some bizarre reason think their climate experts, and are supposed to be working from home Mmmm.

I have no fuss and blister about anything. I have replied the same number of times as I have been asked,  and now others are poking their nose in and making a big fuss about nothing.

So just for you I won't answer anymore questions on this particular issue.
Chipper, you are an absolute master of forum replies, I have over the years come to admire how, without being too wordy or really rude to people, you have an ability to insert a phrase that will be aimed loosely at an individual  or a group or may not be aimed at all. Often a completely vague comment or sometimes not, gets inserted into your replies.  Your replies often leave people hanging, wanting more from you but you leave it there and people hanging for you to elaborate, which you seldom do.
Anyway a few pages back you wrote that your mother said people swear through ignorance, I don't necessarily agree with that, your mother was completely wrong, like you are on this thread about climate change I think the more likely....

Just caught up with this. Thanks for the compliment you are almost right. There are several posters in a little club who think they are experts on every subject who dismiss anything that anyone else says. Their actions are usually hypocritical to their own views. They have an opinion just like everybody else. The shear arrogance of some is quite astonishing.

Just look at the last few days where a couple of decent posters had the audacity to air strong and good views. They will not return as the know alls rounded on them. They try to justify their behaviour by quoting what THEY call facts that are 99% of the time are Google or A1 generated.  I can't stand the bullying some posters get if they don't share or have a different view.

My mother God bless her was always right,  and particularly about swearing. Yes in some cases it's inoffensive but one particular poster is abusive and can't say a sentence without putting the F word and C word in. Usually poking their nose in to someone else's business.

You are not wrong no-one really knows my view, and when I did express an opinion., I got bombarded with a question that had no relation to my original post. And the pack as always dived in. And you are right if someone demands an answer I leave them hanging and throw a curved ball back in. Nothing annoys them more.

There are also some posters who I will never reply too for historical reasons, one example being sympathetic to terrorists. and that often gets misinterpreted that I don't have an answer etc.

Now that everyone is the way to give someone a roasting without being offensive. Cheers Keston. Loved it.

    Good luck mate.
I tend to comment less and less nowadays. I'm never going to change my opinions on certain subjects, which in my own head I'm often quite passionate about and very correct about most of the time, but  I realise I will not change anyone else's point of view so I tend not to bother. I sometimes chime in, like I have on this thread but I don't really add anything of value or worth reading.
I do enjoy reading others opinions, there is a good number of posters on here that are both more intelligent and articulate than me. I also like a post that is humorous, which there are many on this site but primarily this is a Charlton fan site and a good one. Some of the other football  sites, in fact most of the internet nowadays, is a sewer and not the place I enjoyed a good number of years ago.
I sure we all probably rub shoulders with one another on match days, in bars, on transport, in the ground and chat with strangers about football in very civil terms.  I'm almost sure your as much a decent bloke as the rest of us ;).

But you should air them. Too many posters stop their views cos they have been bullied by the pack. I had it for years on the political forum, even had a poster tell me how my HR operated, despite the fact he didn't know me or who I worked for. They don't with me as I stand my ground.

Your view is as valid as anyone else's. In fact your last couple of posts have had more intelligence in them than most of the 110 pages. We've lost a couple of posters this week due to this and probably another couple next week.

    Keep fighting.

I'm really amused that this thread has gone > canters talks about climate change in the climate change thread > the same group of climate change deniers as last time argue with what he said > canters provides statistics, data and a list of the eco-friendly steps he's taken > instead of engaging with the argument the climate change deniers claim canters thinks he's Jesus. It says an awful lot that using the available data is apparently seen a Messiah-level feat. The arrogance of reading and sharing some science! Who do you think you are, God?! It's quite the self-own

    Rain non stop for January/February.
We the had more rain in the first 2 weeks of June than we had for March, April and May.
If someone had told me 3 months ago I'd be going to work in 30c plus I'd of told them bollocks am I.
You don't need data , you only need to look outside to realise all is not well.
Year on year were getting montly weather records getting broken a few times at year.

Please take time to look at the data.

Why do people need to look at data?.

Nah, it's just winter then summer ain't it? That's how it works, it's cold and wet in winter, hot and dry in summer, nothing to see here move along ... 🙄

Looks like Burnham is likely to be granting more drilling licences.

Personally view it as pragmatic and popul(ist)ar

Which is a fair point. Or would be if it were happening. But the things you state I simply haven't seen. ME14 nor anyone else has preached about what others should do or should be doing. I haven't seen anyone "point the finger" other than those making the same argument as you.

"Do what you judge others for" is a fair statement except I haven't seen anyone judging others for their choices.

I haven't seen the preaching part of "Practice what you preach". Preaching implies telling others what to do. I haven't seen a single instance of that. Sometimes Emmy doesn't get her tone right. We can all do that sometimes. But it's because she is passionate and really cares. I can't fault her for that. But I've never seen her tell anyone else what to do or how to live. That accusation is simply false. Her message has always been about the causes of climate change.

I saw someone mention the jobs generated by new drilling.

Unfortunately that simply isn't true. The impact assessment by Adura (The operator a joint venture by Shell and Eqinor) presented to the High Court for the appeal showed that opening up to new oil fields  will only create 27 additional FTE jobs. This is because it will largely be remotely operated and that all admin non-on site roles will be based outside the UK. It will also rely on 273 existing jobs for the platform but is not expected to extend the life of those roles.

    https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/number-of-full-time-workers-at-jackdaw-gas-field-couldnt-fill-a-small-bus/

Pretty small change when compared with the 60k a year new Green sector jobs bring created.

But this is just "on google" so I'm sure those who don't want it to be true will convince themselves its not true. Even though the oil company themselves said this in court.

When I left the house this morning the ground was covered with wet stuff. Not sure what it was or where it came from but was everywhere. Very strange.
As we've now had a little bit of rain and there is more due this week its worth everyone getting out there and airating their lawn and beds - poke holes in the soil with a garden fork and smaller holes in the beds around plants. This will help the soil to allow water in and absorb it rather than it all running off the surface which will have become aquaphobic in the dry spell.
I wouldn’t recommend airating artififical grass though.

I use Copilot, if you ask a question of it, it usually gives a link to the source, so that you can check where the info came from.

If I'm going to post on a topic, I want to check that what I'm saying is correct.

Playing devils advocate but how do you know AI isn’t pointing you in a certain direction and wants you to believe what it wants you to believe. Like Meta have, allegedly, made their platform intentionally addictive, maybe the tech companies have weighted AI to hoodwink us all into believing things that aren’t true. I have never used AI, not interested in doing so. I’ll stick to my Dad’s Daily Express, they always tell the truth 🤔😂

The major problem is the destruction of Earth’s natural resources to protect itself. Destruction of the Rain Forests. Obviously the burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor now but if we hadn’t destroyed the planet for greed the Earth would be handling this better. I honestly don’t know where it will end up. Will it plateau or will it get slowly hotter until it’s unsustainable for human life? Not a pleasant thought but it’s mankind  that has created this.

I absolutely believe that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, it's nothing new.

I've said before, that the first time I knew that CO2 in the atmosphere trapped heat, and had a warming effect, was when I was at school. At that time it was more that without it, the Earth would be too cold. Now the balance has been upset.

There is overwhelming evidence that the increase in CO2 is the cause of greater warming, and the warming causes the climate to change  leading to extreme weather.

Using AI,  I can find supporting evidence to confirm the findings of 97% of climate scientists. I'm not asking it to do anything but find the information that is already out there.

    Yes.
