His performances in the last couple of games to get us over the line were unbelievably good. He is a valuable member of our squad.3

I’m sure he realises that technically he is not as good as some other players. I’m sure he also realises that he has attributes that more technically gifted players may not have; namely fitness, willingness to graft and off the ball intellect.
Last year, particularly towards the end of the season those attributes were vital. He strikes me as a very good professional who recognises his place in the squad and the role he has and he’s happy to do whatever benefits the club.

The best role for him is to captain from the bench. Substitute as a player to bring on when you need defensive grit when protecting a lead. If he starting regularly then we didn’t upgrade the midfield the way we needed2

I think he was as good, if not better, in September-October as he was at the end of the season. I doubt he’s going to start loads of games but he does offer something none of our other midfielders offer and I think Jones will often want him on the bench. I’d be shocked if he’s chopped.wmcf123 said:

There have been too many games where he has been anonymous but agree that the last 5-10 games were his best. The problem with that is that next season could be a repeat of this for where he starts playing well for the last 5-10 games. That is not good enough.2

He was our only midfielder who was able to read the game and was able to be in the right place, at the right time, to snuff out danger. He struggles when he tries to be expansive.
He can be the current team's Keith Jones, as long as he has the right players around him to whom he can give the ball to start attacks.

We can upgrade on Doc, same with all our players, but that's doesn't mean we should ignore his qualities on or off the pitch, the same with our other players.
He was an important part of Hull getting promoted from league one a few years ago and then staying up, ditto with us.
Gradually, as Hull improved their squad over three seasons, he played fewer and fewer games and moved on.
The same will probably happen to him here, hopefully with the same outcome for the club as at Hull.14 -
I like Doc immensely as a person. As a footballer, he is fine. His limitations are fairly obvious, but he gives us some of the best off-the-ball work we've seen in a while. Perfect for a game or situation where we are under the pump, and this season that was quite often, but if we are going out with the expectation of dominating teams, he does not give us the impetus we need in possession to properly pressure a defence. In effect, he would become a bit of a passenger.
This said - we are a lower-table side as it stands. And we will be up against more teams that will finish above us than below us - again, as it stands. Doc should absolutely be an important part of our squad, but I want us to make signings that mean we can dominate teams we want to finish below us rather than playing the same low block, counterattack, win second ball stuff that we tend to focus on.8 -
Docs attitude 10/10, passion 10/10 and never gives up, same as Lyod Jones both imo are the heartbeat of the team, a lot of people will be critical of his technical ability but you need players like him. Play him alongside someone who is better at seeing a pass and can deliver it then you will see his real worth shine. I just don't think Doc and Coventry are a good pair they don't complement each other.7

Would like to see Doc in the team next season alongside two creative mids that he can give the ball to to get us up the pitch. Same but I think Ouma is the Docherty upgrade in that he is a midfield battler but much better with the ball, so it kind of makes sense he’s the one to make way. We likely didn't want Doch injured because we're trying to move him out. The squad is very big and Mwamba is ahead of him in the pecking order. Greg is a top bloke and I'm sure he'll always be popular here. But when people are debating his impact and have to talk about how he organised a free-kick, or did well in a few games here or there, it does say something.4

I know they were linked with him earlier in the window but Leicester look like a side that could really use him. I hope he stays but I guess something has to give squad wise.

Today was the game where I thought (pre match) that even if he was down the pecking order he would be in the squad for his experience and his attributes most suited to that sort of game. That he didn't make the squad says everything.
I like Greg, great guy, proper hard worker, a battler and great at what he does. But the time has come for him to move on13 -

Wembley captain moving on alongside Wembley goal scorer is about as ruthless as it can mean. Harsh but if the club truly wants to progress then it has to keep on building with the momentum that's grown since Jones arrived. Would like to think the club would also give Docherty a similar send-off to which Gillesphey received, clapped out of the front door I think was the phrase Curbs used when he left.Scoham said:
