Preston is a really big game, much bigger than this. I think this is effectively a night out to see the new ground and get some minutes into players that need it. I understand that we need to act as a proper club etc, but we aren’t going to win the Carabao Cup. Last year Bell got injured against Chelsea to quite damaging effect and it was totally pointless as we lost 5-1 anyway.

Spurs play at home on the Saturday evening so very short recovery for them - that will have quite a big bearing on their lineup.

I’m very much in favour of as many changes as possible for this

Just don’t want to get absolutely battered as it will do naff all for the players confidence.

Enough of worrying for the Spurs players.

Do we reckon Spurs will rotate the entire eleven as well? Didn’t see their line up / bench yesterday. Presume it will be their U21s so perhaps we can get away with a bigger rotation than I suggested (can’t see Brooks in goal though - no chance)
After our respective results yesterday I think it’d be silly for them to play their U21s. If they do that then we will win imo.
Yeah I think if they had won yesterday (or at least not been thrashed) then De Zerbi would have had flexibility to rest their first team. Now I think they’ll pick a pretty strong side.
If anything Spurs need to play their main players, to get them match fit. Their pre season tour down under was good for finances, but not good for actually getting their players ready for the season.

As for our team, I imagine all the players will want to play this one. But one or two will need to be rested, like Bell and Chalobah, plus there are others like Sichenje, Mesik, Knibbs, Alli, JRS and Apter who will benefit from decent minutes - Sichenje looked quite rusty yesterday. And it seems like an ideal game for Ouma to make his debut. We can still put out a "proper" team, even after making changes, whereas the Cambridge lineup last season had several kids, and a bench of kids.

The no 9 spot will be interesting, as we don't want to overplay Miles, but he'll want to play this game. I wonder if Kanu might feature - just because he's on his way out, it doesn't mean he can't still play for us.
I think they will play a weakened side, at least to start.

after yesterday’s debacle at Brentford, not winning next Saturday at home to Newcastle would be unforgivable. They need to be able to put out their strongest team for that game and it’s far more important than a cup match against a team from a lower league which on paper they should be comfortable in dispatching.

We’ve also got some pretty big guys in our squad and we’ve got pace. Combining those two factors in a game where the clashing of the two league styles can lead to potential ‘over enthusiasm’ is probably not the best timing to stage the match from their perspective. Risking any of their keys players against us on Wednesday night and not having them available on Saturday is not an option for them.

What is this resting players already…FFS…I might agree if it was a few months time but honestly aren’t they pampered enough?

A good cup run in a non fancied cup is the way to go…why can’t we go further and gets some more coffers into our account for future more expensive players?

We're now playing Weds - Sat - Weds - Sat - Weds - Sat for the next 3 weeks. The performance levels in our opening two games have been immense so far, not sure if you have seen both games in full but please don't under-estimate the toll the two performances will have taken out of the team.

I mean sure we can just keep starting the same team every game but then the inevitable injuries will soon follow. Better to use the full squad, rotate and get through to the international break in as clean a bill of health as possible.

I really don't like this defeatist attitude.

Realistically you are 100% right. But win on Wednesday, a couple of good draws and we are in the QFs. And then who knows what might happen, particularly with the big boys not really taking it seriously until the SFs.

I don't say play the team that won on Saturday but at least put a strong team out and give it a good go.

Nice night out, go and give it a go, but don’t risk players with any issues, and we have a decent squad of players who need minutes.

Got to keep King Arthur in
Horsfield has come out of retirement? There's only one King Arthur.

No trains back from Victoria to SE London after 22:33. Anyone have any suggestions. Can’t see we will make that unless we leave early?

I think 50 years or more on we can have another one can’t we?

    Can we do it?

    Can we get something?

I mean they will be playing the way we want and like - all possession - smash and grab

If Spurs play like they did at Brentford then we've definitely got a chance. The reality though is that Brentford are a very good side and Spurs will play a lot better at home.

  • By now the players will be starting to be feeling more confident about themselves and, more importantly for the team, each other. If we are going to do anything this season then that is the state of mind we want to aim for.

Obviously it’s early days as far as the season goes but that was one massive challenge we triumphed over on Saturday and the perfect game, team, stadium and huge crowd that was needed for a warm up for the challenge ahead coming so soon on Wednesday night. It couldn’t have been timed better is we planned it.

We are also 3 consecutive winning games in, TC has scored in each of them, Lloyd Jones, incredibly, has scored in the last two. One player on a little run is what you always hope for because scoring goals is a habit. Two players with the confidence scoring in consecutive games brings is a boost for the team and a headache for the opposition.

Collectively we are currently a winning team and winning teams tend to expect they will win and do so more often than not. We saw that mentality in action with the run we had to turn our season around and win promotion. Keeping them going tends to get easier the longer they go one and whilst they inevitably come to an end setbacks are easier to bounce back from. Similarly, frequently losing becomes a habit that’s hard to break and Spurs seem to have got into that one.

Games with 3 points at stake are the only ones that really matter but playing in and winning cup games in between, especially ones like this, are huge.

Like Saturday at West Ham, if there is ever a good time to be playing a particular team then this is it.

Where's everyone drinking pre game - is there an away pub or is it better to have a drink in the ground ?

I suspect the usual and most sensible/cost effective way for going to any game, home or away, for most of us is to have a drink along the way and then, according to time and personal preference, have a drink in the ground.

On this occasion, however, given the money Spurs have spent on the ground I’m tempted to bite the potential cost bullet and go straight to the ground and drink under the stands just to experience it. Besides, the noise and atmosphere generated under the stands is always a great warm up for the match to really get things going.

Genuinely couldn’t give a flying about this game. We have to play it but need to protect our more important and vulnerable players and give minutes to those who need them. I hope NJ doesn’t see this as some kind of challenge and play our first 11.

In that case, if by chance you do have a ticket for the match there is a spares thread where you might want to consider passing it on to someone who does ‘give a flying’ about it.

Crazy talk. What's the point of football if not for big games like this.

Beating one of the best teams in England who have just spent about £200m on players at the most expensive ground in Europe would surely be one of our greatest ever results. NJ isn't going to go into the game with your attitude.

After the way we played on Sat, I wouldn't be surprised if De Zerbi goes as strong as he can on Weds, including maybe Savinho and Marmoush if we get them over the line in time.  He needs the team to gel as quickly as possible and they're only going to be doing that if they play together.

At the end of the day, a team should be able to play twice a week without issue.

I'd definitely rest Bell and Chalobah as others have said but other than that, this time of year, the more games you play, the quicker you get up to full speed both fitness and team gelling wise - Mesik and possibly Ouma in for those 2, everything else the same. I'd also see some logic in Grant and Carey making way for Alli and Knibbs and possibly somebody for Macnamara who might be feeling it a bit after being out so long. However, I don't think we should go there and surrender and i don't think a lot of our top players will be pleased if they have to sit it out. The club will know who needs resting and yes, i wouldn't put anybody at risk but don't think that is the case this early in the season. Different if we're playing Northampton at home when it will just be a bore / grind for our first 11.
