Think some people are being very harsh on Carey. Agreed he hasn't been amazing first few games, and that was a pretty glaring error on Sat not to slide Miles in. But he's not been awful. Still putting himself about loads, still driving the ball up the pitch pretty regularly. He got a good shot off against West Ham that was well saved. He's still a very important part of the team imo.

Also in terms of progress, he is undoubtedly getting his head up more and passing - hasn't always picked the right option but for a lot of last season he was just running headlong into tackles.  He still brings what he brought last year and he's showing positive signs where we need improvement.
Jones and his coaches need to be hammering it in to him that he needs to look for a pass to a player in a better position when he has an opposition player on his heels and another right in front of him. I agree he is a good ball carrier and has a goal in him, but too often he is still simply looking to get a shot off when it isn’t the right option.

I’d be surprised if Carey doesn’t start the majority of games for us this season (barring injury).

He’s so key to us out of possession, his work rate and pressing is brilliant and I don’t think any of our other options would offer the same levels. And his ball carrying and shooting in possession are also very important for us. Yes he can improve plenty and hopefully he does over the course of the season, but he’s going to be a key player even with those weaknesses

Are we talking about the same player? Personally would have said work rate and pressing were some of the attributes Carey struggles with.

Yeah I'd have Knibbs over Carey as a workrate monster

I reckon if Carey had poor work rate he would have been hooked from the team by now.

I spoke to a non Charlton supporting mate today, said "everyone on the Charlton Forum seems to be getting really excited about our potential record new signing, Jesurin Rak-Sakyi. His reply was illuminating "Who?!"

I will be pleased and relieved if JRS signs, as I think he will strengthen our first XI, and we are unlikely to sign anyone else as good at this late stage of the window.  However, in an ideal world, I would rather we had signed, for a similar amount of money, Jordan Holsgrove, or someone of that ilk, as we will still be left with a paper-thin midfield that will look vulnerable if Chalobah is injured. And that was obviously NJ's strategy for the window, too.

On another matter, why has no report been posted of our u18's 3-1 win over Huddersfield on Saturday?
Given our recent history of dreadful injury records and paper thin squads I think depth is always a big part of the puzzle, however in the position you reference we currently have Coventry, Chalobah, Ouma, Mwamba, Docherty and (if need be) JRC and even Carey who NJ I think ideally wants to play deeper. I’m not sure there’s space for much more realistically, even if one goes out
Chalobah is notoriously injury prone. if he were not, he would not be with us because he is real class.

Ouma is a punt.  He be wonderful or may be crap. We will not know until which months after the window closes.

Mwamba we have great hopes for, but has looked lost in his two cameos so far, so may take some months to be worth a place in the team.

Docherty, JRC and Carey are all crap and should be nowhere a Championship side. JRC is onw of the worst players I have ever seen in a Charlton shirt. He finds it hard to break into a slow trot. Maybe our best passer, but that is not enough.

Coventry has played really well this season. So much better without Docherty confusing him. But that is only three games. After three seasons of League One standard play, where he looked solid but unenterprising, I have yet to be convinced he will maintain his new level.

We need a rugged box-to-box MF in there who can defend when called on. Someone like George Dobson. I know we cannot sign him, because a section of posters throw temper tantrums at the thought of re-signing former players, but someone of that type. Sam Morsy would have been ideal. He left on a free.

Based on what? Carey scored the goals that kept us up last year and works his nuts off.

Unless you've watched loads of Knibbs at Reading in league one and are basing it on a division lower, no one knows really how good Knibbs will be in the champ.

That would be a shot in the dark to get rid of a guy who's done it already at this level (who has started slowly this year) for a guy who's totally unproven

I am not saying Carey isn't a good player and his goals were instrumental for us last season, i just don't think his strength is pressing the ball out of possession.

An average of 3.2 total ball recoveries per 90 minutes places Sonny Carey slightly below the positional average for modern attacking midfielders in the EFL Championship. The average at this level is 3.5-4.5 per 90.

Ouma is the player for that box to box midfielder.

But what about yards gained in carrying the ball? Bet he is right up there.

Got any stats for how many times he picks his head up per 90? Got to be 0.

That isn't what we were discussing, i agree he is a very good ball carrier i just disputed the claim that he is a great presser of the ball.

Jones has a very specific set of demands of his players. If Carey wasn’t meeting them he’d be out of the team. He’s worth his place, certainly for now.

We just need to create the space at the edge of the box for Carey, teams have shut it down due to his shooting, but much more of TC and maybe JRS and the space will start to appear again.

Carey is still young and will get better, I find it a bit ingenuous that people are focusing on the part of his season that dropped off, over the absolutely blinding part of the season he had, this indicates he has the quality and deserves a bit of support and trust. He is still the best we have in his position at the moment and IMO should start until someone challenges and does better than him. Not sure who people think is available that is better than him. Also can’t believe after 3 wins people are considering changing the team for our league games.

That’s one stat in a team that we know changed from pressing his to sitting deep later on in the season, and had one of the lowest budgets. We were never likely to press high and aggressively all season long.

Whoever ends up as first choice in that position should press more effectively compared to last season if we’re able to stick to 4-2-3-1 for most of the season.

I don’t think we’ve seen enough of Knibbs in terms of a run of starts to know how he’d compare to Carey. Both are hard working goalscoring attacking midfielders than creative playmakers who can pick a clever pass.

Carey has areas to improve but I wouldn’t write him off doing so. I know one of his games was in the cup but he has a goal and 2 assists so far, it’s not as if he hasn’t contributed. He went left to Grant when Leaburn was in the better position, but in a similar position against Cheltenham he passed to Godden instead of TC and Godden then scored.
