To be honest I'd rather spend £6 on 4 cans of lager from Sainsburys and drink them on the street, than pay the prices being charged in the ground.
£7.90 for a pint of Peroni, no thanks.
  • Missed Opening day v Derby but there on Saturday, bringing friends who I've been encouraging to come for a while!
Aimimg to be at the ground by 1pm...... What chance of getting a seat in Meantime Fans Bar and getting a pint within 15 mins??  Also, seen burger prices in Fanzone, last season v Hull near end of season think paid £8.now £12???

Then they will turn the Fans Bar into a pay up front hospitality area once again.

Except that fell flat on its face that time and likely would do so again.

There’s been no real response publicly from the club to all the opening day issues - just hoping there is activity to address going on behind the scenes though Larry’s report isn’t encouraging.

Received this email today in response to my complaints, im sure others will have received similar...

Thank you for taking the time to provide the detailed feedback.

We have completed a review following the Derby fixture and recognise that a number of areas within the Fans Bar need improvement.

Bar service – we experienced issues with the existing beer dispense equipment. We are working directly with our beer supplier and investing in additional pumps, improved dispense equipment and increased service capacity. We are pushing to have as much of this additional equipment installed as quickly as possible.

Food offer – we are undertaking a complete review of the Fans Bar food specification. This includes simplifying the range, introducing a dedicated kids' offer and providing greater flexibility around individual items. We are also looking to make traditional matchday options, including pies and sausage rolls, available from behind the bar.

Seating – the overall number of seats in the Fans Bar has not been reduced. Some tables were removed to improve circulation, but the feedback has made it clear that we haven't got the balance right. We will therefore be adding additional tables back into the Fans Bar.

There is a programme of work underway covering equipment, training, food and drink choice and service capacity, with changes being introduced over the coming fixtures.

Thank you again for raising your concerns.

    Hmmm.

    Proof of the pudding...

Guessing there won't be much improvement as soon as this Saturday.

Surely they should of tested the beer pumps before the opening week of the season?.

I suppose it was a capacity thing, you cant really test for a few thousand people with noone there.

It’s a real shame in football you never get a period of about three months to undertake these kind of reviews and then implement the changes.

Somewhere around May to July would be ideal I reckon

Here is the email..... please do better CAFC

    Hi

Really disappointed at the treatment of Larrys Mobile Bar. A local business that fans enjoy, and apparently he is not sure if he will be there for the 20k plus crowd on Saturday.
A business needs certainty to operate successfully. Considering Larrys bar is the most organised and efficient bar operation to grace The Valley for many years please can someone in our club sort this shambles out and allow Larry to serve supporters this weekend.

I cannot understand why every year he has to go through this disorganised process.
Why not have a conversation  with Larry at the end of May to ensure he has the chance to be there at the first home game of the season.

Please pass this on the someone who can make a difference and see this through instead of just kicking the can down the road.

    Regards

    Grunting pissed 9ff l9don bloke

But the club has the data on what worked / didn't work from last year

Is there anybody working at the club that is essentially in charge of everything at Charlton not football related?
If there are fans liaison people, who do they liaise with?
I wonder who deals with thise matchday questionnaires we're asked to complete ...

Are they collated, their responses logged & passed to a Senior Manager to evaluate/report onwards & upwards ?

Or are they just a tick box exercise & destined to go straight into the nearest bin ?

About 5 years ago we had enough of the poor service etc,  one of ours asked to see the manager and had a chat with him. He arranged for the following home game to meet and for us to make a list of our gripes.

We duly did and the meeting took place. We gave it a few weeks things never improved so we have been drinking elsewhere ever since, for half the price.

I have on the odd occasion gone in post match but always get a drink off Larry.

I appreciate is convenient for some of our older supporters and those with kids. But things won't improve unless you take it in your own hands. And go elsewhere.

They were doing discounts for the first game of the season in the West Stand corporate areas so already they are not selling what they thought they would.

They won’t go back to doing that in the Fans Bar even if people vote with their feet and drink elsewhere

Making food available from behind the bar… how to create even longer queues and piss fans off even more

For fans who travel from Blackheath village/station, very shortly there will be a brand new Sainsbury’s Local opening almost next to the Holland and Barrett same side as the station entrance. So you can get a meal deal there, or buy a can of booze or two with maybe less queueing than at the Charlton Sainsbury’s Local. Blackheath also has a Greggs, the whole shebang five minutes on the train to Charlton plus several buses.
The new chip shop opposite the station will be opening soon, and the proper coffee in the station itself is very nice too (but Alex of Perkalicious is the best thing about the fans bar). You have other outlets and pubs like the Railway, even the crappy Gails if you enjoy being ripped off.
The attractive feature of the Fans Bar is the bogs are a better place for a piddle than in the Curbs stand.

I received a similar reply (below). It was interesting that it was sent by someone from the Compass Group not Charlton

We have completed a review following the Derby fixture and recognise the issues you have highlighted across the Fan Zone, North Upper and Fans Bar.

The demand exposed limitations in the existing beer dispense infrastructure, with barrel changes and equipment issues reducing capacity during the busiest periods. We are working directly with our beer supplier and investing in additional pumps, improved dispense equipment and increased service capacity. We are pushing to have as much of this installed as quickly as possible.

We are also reviewing stock positioning and replenishment, so that individual bars have greater back-up capacity during peak periods, alongside strengthening beer-pouring and EPOS.

The temperature within the Fans Bar has also been raised with the Club team responsible for the building infrastructure.

Your final point is particularly important. We want supporters to arrive earlier and choose to spend their time and money at The Valley, rather than feeling the need to go elsewhere because of queues or availability.

There is a programme of improvements underway, and the focus now is on delivering a noticeable improvement over the upcoming fixtures.

Problems are usually acknowledged in situations like this but nothing gets better.
    Been the same for years.

Interesting to note they don’t simply say we are going to also have more and better trained/ experienced staff. You’d think as a short term measure that might compensate / mitigate the limitations of the ‘kit’.

But regardless they are an outsource partner who should know all this stuff in advance shouldn’t  they?
  • Problem is that the investment in new dispense equipment will be made by the supplying Brewer. With sales low due to how often bars are actually open they are unlikely to see any return. The increase in sales will certainly not cover the outlay.

Isn't that part of the point of having a partnership with Meantime though? They provide that stuff for some visibility because of the lack of regular sales
  • I believe they paid a lot more than Heineken in the past and now feel that they are not getting value for money. Someone did a good job on them !
