Club can't win, play the first XI, Leaburn and Bell get crocked, we get spanked 4 nil anyway and you'll all be up in arms about it.
There are lots of levels between playing our entire first XI and resting 10 of them. Oh well, bit of a wasted journey (and expenditure) but gonna have a few beers and enjoy the occasion.

But then we lost Godden to a training ground injury. You can't wrap footballers up in cotton wool 24/7.
So if we put out the full team, win but get 2 injuries in key positions and it culminates in a downtown in League form and a relegation, I'm sure we'd all go "hey at least we beat Spurs in August"

It's not a popular choice, but playing a rotated squad is the right choice in the bigger picture

Have no issue with a rested side to be honest. If we beat Preston on Saturday then it's a good decision.
    And if we don’t…..
That’s always a risk, but the league must be the priority, so we can’t have it all ways.

i also think he will make a lot of subs in this game.

Hopefully all 11 starters fight for their place

About managing risk though - training is a necessity, playing in the League Cup Second Round is not.

If we get relegated - even reaching the quarter finals would be of scant consolation to most fans.

Oh wow. Even Brooks is starting.

Bradley Tagoe on the bench - for those who haven’t seen him, he’s similar to a young TC before he bulked up, but left footed. Has even spent time at wing back.
Sky Sports app has Tagoe as number 53 - same number as TC in his debut season.

    It’s an impossibly hard choice

If Brooks doesn't play in this when does he I guess. If we win this they're manager is getting sacked :D

If we don’t win we’ve given it our best shot by having our key players as fresh as possible, and gone out of the Mickey Mouse cup.

Should've just lost in round 1 then if we don't want to play in it. Pointless and poor attitude.

Just for context that team has 4 full internationals, a current England u20 international, our club captain and 2 of last seasons big signings. That list doesn’t include Koumetio.

Imagine being able to say that about our backup 11 a year ago

I'm reliably informed that he is on his way to Preston and that the only reason he signed a 4 year contract was so we could screw another £10m out of them

    Udogie 16m

    Gray 40m

    Bergvall 8.5m

    Davies 10m

  • Whilst the team selection is weak. Remember Boro last year where a lot of us were questioning it. That didn’t turn out too bad.

The league is the only thing that matters

What a joke of a line up. It's why I will never warm to Jones. We had a punchers chance with a full team etc, now will be a big defeat.

Am sure Bergvall, Bentancur and Fernandes will be sweating facing Apter, Doherty and Knibbs 🫢

That bench choice very much reads as "by some miracle we are ahead at 60 odd minutes so get some experience on to hold it" or "we are getting so thumped we need to at least reduce the embarrassment"

You make 10 changes and we put out a pick-up side.
Feel sorry for both sets of fans that made the time and effort to attend.
Anyway, good luck and may the best team on the night win.

Might watch Once Upon A Time In The West instead.

I am a bit disappointed "A Trialist" hasn't made it through pre-season with that kind of line up though. Imagine the sky sports commentators not being allowed to say his name lol

Clubs rely heavily on leagues financially - that's the way the game is now. The vast majority of managers would do the exact same thing as NJ has done tonight.

He said he'd 'use the squad' but Asiimwe and Brooks... What is that about. Mwamba and JRC on the bench, too. Surely they've got more of a role to play this season than Docherty. A really odd lineup.
  • Pointless playing in the Cups if we have such a weak starting lineup. Embarrassing....
