Hung in there for most of the first half, then a quick double extinguished any real hope. I wasn’t impressed with the midfield who completely panicked every time they got hold of the ball. Nice stadium, poor atmosphere for the most part, and it felt like a training exercise. Shame we couldn’t have kept the same first team from the weekend, but I understand the decision. It just spoils the day out a little knowing you haven’t given it your best shot. Hope the injuries are not as bad as feared.

    PWR post match.

On the train home & never again. Journey home is a nightmare & didn't enjoy the game (apart from our goal)

No point entering competitions if you are happy to take a 5-1 defeat and subject your 3rd choice keeper to derision.

Call me all the names you want but today was a waste of time.

MOTM was Asimwee. Feel sorry for the lad as he was probably one of the 4 we were going to shop out. Maybe not now with the injuries but to my mind you dont play players in the cup games then tell them they aren't wanted for the league campaign. Disgraceful.

Oh well......at least we are now going to smash Preston

  • We have got injuries tonight? No shit Sherlock..you put out team against quality players…2of which the majority of ours haven’t even appeared in some pre season games and we wonder why they are getting injuries..there are no words

Pointless getting excited  anymore about drawing a big team ,to then just play a very weak squad and get knocked out
But earned £6-700,000 in revenue for the club. We had to learn our lesson from Chelsea last season where we lost heavily as well.
We earned our big pay day against Spurs, we played the players who needed minutes and, other than two unfortunate injuries, we live to have a good go in the league.
Move on - it was fun, we got tonked as expected, now let's concentrate on the league

Can you tell how bad a hamstring injury is straight away?

The starting line up tells you all you need to know.

It’s disrespectful to the competition and to those paying for  tickets and tv subscriptions.

It was not a pre season friendly.

No justification at this stage in the season.

Apart from Billy, which first teamers would you want injured before Saturday?
  • Not fussed about playing b team, league games are our priority and us fans have ticked off a nice new ground, the 2 first half goals done us, very poor, such bad luck with the injuries, had this game been played later in season without the extra mid week games we could have fielded a stronger team and have a proper go, onto Saturday!

Injuries don’t happen because we were in the second round of a cup competition.  It’s just football.  It happens.

We deliberately played a weak team expecting to lose and bank the receipts.

Shame they didn’t tell fans in advance. Although Rodwell sort of did on TalkSPORT earlier today.

Our transfer targets don’t really change im sure just firms up options that were under consideration.

Regardless Preston next is all we can concentrate on.
NJ said as much after West Ham. His words were along the lines of he would use the squad, because of all tbe matches before the international break.
Obvious really, bit surprised people were surprised.

Before tickets went on sale?( but yes select just one part of my comment)
Fixture list was published before the season started.
It is available publicly and there are many games coming up before the international break.
Probably find the manager had other priorities to the league cup
To underline this Preston also put out their b team and lost.

NJ said it in the post-match interview after West Ham and in the pre-match before Spurs.

I meant to add, such a hard game for the b team players to stake a claim for the 1st team,  but every time I’ve seen mbick play I just don’t see anything?

I kind of expected exactly that lineup except with Burke in place of Koumetio. Naturally it means Koumetio is getting some kind of ludicrous injury tonight. I get it, we give minutes to players who need it like Ouma, Doc, Knibbs, Alli and Sichenje and shop window Asiimwe and Apter. I did wonder if Kanu would at least make the bench as I guessed Jones would want to test Mbick, but the fact he can’t even make this squad tells us that he’s very much in the sell pile. We have a big squad, we’re in very good form in the league and we have a ridiculous injury history. I get it
Our injury record since Jones came in isn’t that bad .
I don’t want to blame anyone, but this is your fault

What are you expecting? Jones to let you know how strong he wants to go every time before you buy a ticket?

Football is a squad game and tonight was the perfect opportunity to rest some of our key players, whilst getting minutes into those that need them. Genuinely baffled people were expecting anything else.

If it wasn’t clear enough before the game,  we’ve then had 2 potentially disastrous injuries which surely underline exactly why you can’t just play a full strength 11 every match. Not only to negate the risk of injuries, but also to let others get some minutes in them for when injuries do occur.

You want Alli gone after we bought him in the summer? :D

Injuries happen. Against Preston too is the point.

At this early stage we aren’t accepting/ being forced to accept huge risk in our starting line up choices.

If they are all that fragile then we won’t last very long.

Poor team selection from a fans perspective overall is my opinion.

  • All those tonight really staked a claim to be in the starting eleven

I do not like cup games against Prem teams in the early rounds of Cup competitions, it does us no good, as tonight two injuries and a huge blow to player moral. Far better play less challenging teams and face the big boys later when we may be a  team comfortably in mid table.
  • Don't understand how the injures scupper a deal for JRS.

PLAY Bell/mesik at cb short term or bring in a loan.

Hopefully it's just disappointed talking straight after the game

Fuck. Sichenje's injury looked bad but was hoping Billy's wasnt.

Be a real shame if those injuries mean we cant get JRS or a eight winger as that would have balanced the attack up.

Mwamba, Mbick, Mesik, assimwe all come out looking better than I expected.

Leaburn, Jones as good as expected

Knibbs, Apter, Ouma (admittedly not match fit) worse than expected.

Brooks, wasnt expecting much and was bang on.

Not fussed really about changing the starting XI, but I would’ve kept the keeper in….just gutted with the injuries picked up.

should’ve been a chance for some to stake a claim but no one did - and spurs were very mediocre for the first 35 mins but we didn’t lay a glove on them.

Mbick had nothing to work with, midfield were nonexistent - Doc and Apter, thanks but bye…hopefully the new fella is better than that and was just getting up to speed.

best bit of the first half was Danny Mac knocking the fella into the advertising board, at least he got stuck in.

Nice stadium but shit area, shite journey and it’s easier getting a beer at the valley. Those behind the bar there make the NU bar staff look like Mensa members.

decided to leave at 3-0 (as did many of ours!) and very glad we did, ticked the stadium off but that about it

hope the injuries aren’t too bad but I fear the worst and that makes the night a whole lot worse.

    onto Saturday

I guess NJ is slightly traumatised from last year when our good start went out the window due to lack of defensive cover when Edward’s and Bell were injured at the same time.

Disappointed in Jones tonight. Rest Bell and TC obviously but a stronger side would have made a real game of that. Very difficult for the fans to get behind the team when it was basically a practice match for Spurs.

I bought two spares from someone on here at 6pm. Wouldn’t have bothered if I’d known what our team was going to be.

If we get Arsenal away in the FA Cup 3rd round, O won’t even be thinking about going - waste of time.

I can only assume that most posters on here are under 40 & don't remember that the League Cup used to be over 2 legs for the first round(s). And then there were replays for the one legged games. And then just 1 sub (or 3 if we come into the 90's).

Players used to regularly play 50 + games season.  None of this resting players. Would be interested to see the line up for the FA Cup match we played at WHL in 81 ? 82 ?  Did that differ from the League matches before or after. I doubt it.

Would love to compare the explosive sprint starts (for example) between players in the 80s/90s and now. That element of the game is so much more physical these days

How is we continually hire players who are brittle as glass, wr can hardly go  a game without some serious injurt

Same CL member after final whistle:

"What was Jones doing playing Koumetio? Now he's injured! Jones out!"

I haven't commented yet but before the game said I would have rested 4, being Bell, Chalobah and Koumetio as they are all a bit injury prone, plus Grant as he has done plenty of big stadiums so unlikely to be so annoyed at missing it.  So you can be both of those CL fans you quote above without hindsight.

Listen, I completely understand the decision, I know the league is more important, I know we probably would of lost with our first team out, I know the risk.

However, seeing that lineup walking into the ground, with 10 changes just killed the occasion. Maybe I was expecting a few changes, I wasn’t planning on watching Rob Apter.

Atmosphere after they scored just went, it was practically non existent second half. It was almost like well if the club ain’t bothering then neither should we.

    Just a real anti-climax of a night.

Anyway, not overly bothered and onto Preston

Agreed with every bit of this.

The away end definitely felt a little flatter than it should have in the build up to kick off. It was as if we’d basically thrown the game before the whistle had even blown.

Well done to the young lads out there who held on as long as they could.

And whilst the injuries are annoying - they could easily happen in a league game. A couple of changes here and there I can understand, but bloody hell I’ve seen us put out stronger sides in the Pizza Cup.

Tonight was meant to be a big occasion, with 6,000 away fans turning up to play one of the biggest clubs / stadium in world football in a very special opportunity. And that lineup showed that we treated it as if it was nothing more than an inconvenience.

The league is most important, but come on, the fans that went tonight have every right to feel a bit let down by those decisions. Does it always have to just be about league points? Supporting a club like ours should embrace the chance to have a glorious cup moment every now and then. At least give us half a chance when it comes around once in a blue moon.

I think it’s hard to judge players based on tonight’s game really, the team hadn’t played together for a start, the quality of the opposition was probably to high a step up to compete against for a lot of our fringe potentially out the door players. Apter is just too lightweight, we were getting bullied in general 1st half but he was bouncing off them, knibbs was behind the game for most of it, Asimwe tried hard but he is league 1 at best at the moment, I genuinely don’t think Mbick is going to be as good in the championship as some think at the moment. Thought Mwamba done well. Doc must be on his way out, jrc tried to put his foot on the ball. Ultimately tonight certain players were asked to raise to a level beyond them, so I think balance is needed in the appraisal of them, they don’t have to be good enough against prem teams, but the question is are they good enough for the championship, I’d argue a few aren’t .

The game has changed quite a lot since those days and most players (particularly those in midfield/attack)  can’t play three games in 7 days any more.
