It’s funny how the goalposts change as the window moves on. I am totally aligned with the disappointment some feel about not getting a right winger after the JRS hope. It felt a bit crazy going for another LW.
But looking and with a bit of reflection, what a transfer window. I wouldn’t have dreamt at the start JRS was even an option, so take that away the fact we have a bolstered pretty much every position and got rid of Kaminski. Doch can’t even get in the squad , which was my main concern 2 months ago.Suddenly we have depth and strength in every position, signing real promising players for the future as well.Also re Apter, it may not be JRS but with better people around him and some hard work he will play better and improve.Exciting time to be a Charlton fan I think.18 -

I can’t see you can say with certainty that we’ve not spent more than last season. We’ve definitely spent more on wages this year and who now’s how much on signing on and loan fees. It all comes out of the same budget. I can’t believe the JRS rumours were all some kind of elaborate conspiracy theory to keep the fans happy. We didn’t need anyone in today for it to have been a cracking transfer window. We’re in a stronger place in every position than this time last year.
personally I’d give the window 8.5/10 JRS would’ve made it 9 or 9.5.
I think Skipp is so useless I drop it to an 8 if he signs. Complete waste of wages.3 -

The lack of rumours about JRS going anywhere else (at this stage) seems to vindicate the club’s approach. Feel for him - he would have been given a hero’s welcome here and been a massive signing I’m sure

But, I understand your larger point, even if I don't agree with it.
What Godden offers, now when fit, is something that are very hard to come by--goals. And it's because he's something different that makes him valuable. Mbick and Leaburn are units and Kelman is hustle and bustle and yes he does score goals but he's not as much of a true paocher as Godden. Godden provides that little nous inside the six yard box, and he still works the channels and hassles and harries defenders at his age.
Would I be surprised if he's fourth choice come Jan? Not really, especially if Mbick starts to get going. But I also wouldn't rule out his importance to the squad either. Putting aside his great L1 season for us, that goal against Watford last year showed what he can do off the bench with even half of a chance inside the box. Kelman's finishing is slightly different from what I've seen, more about running onto the ball. I think all four of our strikers have a role to play.
I think moving on from Godden should be a goal of the evolution of this season. But I think that needs to take place over the entirety of the season. I just don't think we have enough goals off the bench, especially with Kelman hurt, to move on from Godden just yet.2 -

Why? Our midfield is still not right. Chalobah will not play many games and Mwamba is 18. Why wait until a difficult January window when we can try to fix it now.golfaddick said:

JRS was 19 when he played for us. Not sure why people are disappointed with Nkeng or want us to pay huge fees on someone even if not JRS. He might become an option in Jan when his contract is further run down. I’m glad we haven’t overspent on someone that could come back to bite us but have strengthened the position without needing to register a player4

Felt like it would have been a perfect signing (before any issues arose/potentially showed up in a medical) - popular here, good player, good age, and local.so he could settle easily etc.

My view is, the owners don't want to keep having to fund transfers and/or want there to be a bigger transfer kitty in 2/3 years time. So we are buying young players with potential so that we can sell on for £5m/£10m/£15m in the future. Azeez at Millwall being the latest example of that.
Will it work....who knows. Is it a gamble.....most definitely. It didn't work with Kahim Dixon and to a lesser extent Tanto & Apter.
I liked the look of him on the YouTube clip posted earlier, but he himself says he is a left winger who likes to cut inside. In the YouTube video he is shown playing on the right and it does look like he is predominantly right footed. Will he be the answer to our right wing woes ? Probabky not as a starter, which is a shame because neither TC nor Grant work playing on the right.
It might work out but it is far from what is needed and what we've been led to believe we've been keeping our powder dry for.

As I see it, our gaps currently are:
Right Wing - NJ has said this all summer long
Offensive Midfielder - because Carey/Knibbs are not quite up to it yet this season
Striker - if Leaburn gets injured and Micah is not ready
Can’t see how Skipp helps us and he seems to have a poor attitude/very high wages.
We need to get our injured players back which means rotating our squad until the international break and not make any rash signings now.
