The problem is he doesn’t have the work rate and intensity we require without the ball in that role. Off the bench is fine though. There may be some games he can start there, Preston at home was probably one of them where we might have 55%+ of the ballDubaiCAFC said:Our most creative player. Can make things happen. Just a shame he can't get through 90 mins! Would like to see him in the 10 role.
Good point Nabster.
In many 1st halves cafc have such a small % of the ball the game will pass Joe by.
As has been mentioned he has done sweet passes and at least two assists to assists which have led to goals later in games when he is a super sub.1 -

He's superb at driving on the ball, has great close control which can allow him to beat his man in tight spaces and he's excellent at picking a pass. He's made two goals already this season without them being assists by reading the play so much quicker than anyone else in our team would and setting another player away to cause some damage. He's a really useful player to have for a counter attack, which is good because we're actually really bad at countering despite being perfectly set up for it. Carey is the absolute god of picking the wrong option on a breakaway despite being really good at running on the ball and TC, bless him, doesn't always make the incisive choice if he picks it up too deep. JRC doesn't really have the legs to play the way we want from the start but it's very notable that his two biggest contributions have been coming on into that Carey role when the game is a bit more stretched and punishing the gaps that start to appear as the opposition get a bit ragged.Elthamaddick said:decent enough player to have on the bench to come on (in various positions) don't ever see him as a regular starter though.
still don't really 'get him'
I think he'll create a lot of late goals for us playing this way, it's really smart for Jones to recognise that with two midfielders behind him to do the running and more wide options for him to pick out he can take us from defending to having a shot on goal within one or two passes. I didn't really see it coming as an option
Remember when we signed Andrew shinnie from Luton one of their fans had put out a compilation clip where they called him the master of the "pre assist pass" That's Andrew Shinnie who of course was signed for Luton by.... Yep, Nathan Jones.2 -
Said it on the match thread….the guy is turning into a clone of Danny Murphy.
Creative player that always seems to put the perfect weight on his through balls.3 -
He's not a sprinter he's a glider. He's not rapid, but he's got a turn of pace about him. He's a big of an enigma that way. It's weird to think he ever played RB, let alone regularly.NabySarr said:Also he is somehow faster when dribbling with the ball than he is running without it1 -
Thought at the end of last season he was comfortably our best midfielder. At the start of this season I still think he’s comfortably our best midfielder. Should be starting more games!1

No one else has his vision or passing ability or level of close control. I actually think he would also perform even better with more of a run in the side as he had at times last season.Leuth said:

He's a skilful dribbler and has a decent pass. If only this was all that playing in midfield consisted of!forzajuve_27 said:

Was then one of 11 players who were all useless against Millwall, and scored against Preston and played well.He just gets such little game time it’s been hard to really rate him2 -
He hasn't had huge game time. It is however a rancid take. 'Comfortably our best midfielder' lmaoCrispywood said:

Let’s not go mad, he’s not our best midfielder. He has done well in his (albeit limited) minutes so far this season though. I don’t think he’ll start tomorrow but I wouldn’t be opposed if he did.3

I like him as a super sub as he is better when the game opens up in the 2nd half as opposed to when teams are better in possession against CAFC like West Ham and West Brom to name just two teams that are going to have more possession like 70% against us.
I don't tend to call out players other than trying to be constructive with my posts.
It's NJ who isn't picking him to start matches just like his managers at Blackburn didn't always pick him to start.
Now football is very much about using 16 players during the duration of a potential 100 minute game. Being a starter, game changer or game saver are all analysed to the 9th or 10th degree.
JRC is showing his ability.

Think he means when referring to the future is not about him developing as a player, but developing the style of play that gets the most out of JRC.soapboxsam said:

JRC is showing his ability.Out of possession he’s arguably going to be one of the worse players on the team so can see why he didn’t play a lot last season when bypassing the midfield and playing with 30% possession, in possession there’s not a single player who’s got his level of vision and passing range he’s the only true creative player at Charlton2 -

That would make sense if that is indeed the point RH was making.
I think that is a tad disingenuous to say JRC, the only true creative player at CAFC and the shame is Chalobah has fitness issues as he can quickly scan the field and pass which would explain why he played 40 games for England U21'S in midfield back in the day.
NJ wants the team to evolve and as we are now playing 'wingers' our full backs don't have the same onus on getting forward but having said that at times of need it was great to see the passing interplay between Costello and Mesik which led to TC goal after the lovely cross from Ivan to Leaburn to challenge and TC to score from the loose ball.
Coventry can pass to a high standard as he showed recently but not as consistently as Joe does in his cameo appearances.0 -
Coventry passing does look much better and Chalobah is a good passer, but both of them are very safe and often hold the ball to make sure they get the right option looking for players in free space.soapboxsam said:Crispywood said:

Coventry can pass to a high standard as he showed recently but not as consistently as Joe does in his cameo appearances.JRC for me is the only person who’s first instinct is to get the ball forward as soon as possible and tries threading balls between defenders looking for players on forward runs as risky passes even if he has safe options next to him.Not saying Chalobah and Coventry’s traits whilst passing is a bad thing you need players to dictate the tempo, maintain possession, take the sting out of the game etc but I don’t think anyone else in the team can do what JRC did for the goals at Derby and West Brom2 -

Well Joe is starting today for only the 4th time in 2026 with Millwall, Preston and Ipswich the other starts.
NJ had his reasons why he didn't start him before when he was fit and i hope we can get the ball to JRC so he can make the telling passes in transition. Go well Joe.0 -

He's physically and technically not Championship standard, he's only looked half decent coming on in the 80th minute when everyone is gassed.1

Surely before we commit to a signing we assess their stamina? I find it hard to fathom why we spent £750K? or whatever without doing our research on a fundamental attribute for an NJ team. Same goes for Apter and possibly Knibbs.

His technical ability and attacking play is his main strength. He’s never played below this level.LittleAddick said:He's physically and technically not Championship standard, he's only looked half decent coming on in the 80th minute when everyone is gassed.
Physically though I agree he’s not what we need, the way we play we’re better with midfielders who bring pace and/or energy.6 -

He really isn't, he may be more technical than Greg Docherty but that doesn't make him comfortably Championship level when it comes to that.AberystwythAddick said:

Take your point that he's never played below this level, but he's also never been deemed good enough to be a regular starter at this level.Scoham said:

There's a reason he was deemed surplus to requirements at Blackburn1 -
