Did they let you in then?Todds_right_hook said:I need a bag for medical reasons, I contacted the club in advance and they sent me a letter confirming exemption
what could go wrong………
the steward wouldn’t let me in despite the letter. A colleague got involved but still refused access. I asked them to go get a supervisor which they did, I took the opportunity and entered the ground
very poor preparation and training
It makes me think is it worth it and should I watch he game on sky instead0 -
This is what concerns me as well. Can’t trust the stewards to understand that I need to keep mine with me so bag drop is not an option.Todds_right_hook said:I need a bag for medical reasons, I contacted the club in advance and they sent me a letter confirming exemption

The restrictions are as a result of the world we now live in, and people have the make as many adjustments to the routines as they can (look at the changes we now have in air travel).
What this has highlighted yet again in how the club have approached the changes is that off the pitch (with the exception of the box office) we are no where near good enough for a championship club and many non league clubs would put us to shame.13 -
I didn’t leave work until late so missed the match, good job actually as had forgotten about the bag issue.
anyone clarify what is a laptop bag? If we are talking about a bag purely takes a laptop, no one uses them these days for work, it’s rucksacks of a sort.0 -
When you leave your bag at the bag drop, is it searched? If not, it defeats the purpose of Martins law. If they’re searched then you might as well let them into the stadium.13
-
My understanding of the law is that the club has to notify you of significant changes in advance or at the time they renew your season ticket. They didn't so a full refund is in order.redbuttle said:
What about under ground safety and security reasons. Have you seen the terrorist threat level lately?iainment said:Was it in the conditions when STs went on sale? If not can it be enforced under consumer law?
Regarding the security threat, I don't think a blanket ban on greater than A4 bags will increase the safety of visitors to The Valley. So many 'similar ' opportunities will still exist which is why this particular restriction is not included in the legislation.4 -
No I haven’t.redbuttle said:

They’re often chokka with people carrying large bags but they let them in after a scan or search.
And this is at major exhibitions which have large crowds of people with timed entry tickets.
To me it’s just a way to make money and say it’s because of a law that isn’t even in force yet.3 -
Had the usual half-arsed search of my backpack by a steward on the way into the Covered End last night and nothing else.0
-
Saw plenty of folk going into the Covered End with bags larger than A4 an hour before kick off, seems there's zero consistency in how the rules are being implemented, there's also zero signage about it or any word of bag drop & fees around the turnstiles.4

nobody is saying bag’s shouldn’t be searched - they always were
this is purely a money making exercise3 -
Exactly - spend a few hundred thousand and just pop it in Floyd Road (except when it’s raining (or busy) or (both)).iainment said:

Yep, it will all depend on what entrance you use and what steward you are in proximity of. I had a large carrier bag last night and just had the usual tag put on it, no look into it.Sheepie1985 said:Saw plenty of folk going into the Covered End with bags larger than A4 an hour before kick off, seems there's zero consistency in how the rules are being implemented, there's also zero signage about it or any word of bag drop & fees around the turnstiles.0 -
I made a run for it. The steward walked off to get a supervisor so i took the opportunity to walk through the turnstylesredbuttle said:

I would probably still be there arguing if I hadnt of taken the initiative7 -
I received an email on the same day as my phone call to the club. I found the club very helpful and understanding, the problem lies with the stewards not being suitably briefed and also not caringDaveMehmet said:

Could any stewards that are deemed to be not up to the job be retrained as bar staff?14
-
brilliant - not clever enough to check a bag but here you go, try and pull a pint 🤣CaptainRobbo said:Could any stewards that are deemed to be mot up to the job be retrained as bar staff?4 -
I have an exemption email from the club. But I didn't need to show it.
The steward who dealt with me actually made a beeline for me, he was very keen to pass me over to the nearby bag drop. Once I could get a word in, with some force I explained "I have an exemption from the club".
He grudgingly tagged my rucksack - for some reason he was crestfallen. What should he care?
But essentially, I just had to say the magic words - "I have an exemption from the club" - whether I actually had one or not didn't seem to matter.
Bizarre.

Got to Battle at 1.15am. Not a happy bunny.Fanny Fanackapan said:I have nothing to add...
...except I hope no-one having to queue for their bag after the match travelled home via the A2, M25, A21.
We arrived back in Tunbridge Wells at 12.30am.3 -

I know of a few arenas that have made the walls of the reception blast proof to minimise any damage should it be attacked.0

Probably because they cost around £28k each and quite a lot more for something that's IP65 rated, then there's installation, training in use and extra staff costs. You can't have any old casual labour rate person operating one can you? There's operation, radiation safety and threat recognition training. Charlton have people that can't even pour a pint let alone operate a sophisticated piece of equipment. And of course it's not a way to make money. None of this is anything other than a negative on the bottom line. The crap some people come up with honestly.iainment said:

How is bringing an A4 bag "safe", but a slightly larger one unsafe? And unless you body search/scan everyone coming in to the stadium, they could smuggle a bomb in on their body. And to be safe, you'd have to search everyone, including everyone in hospitality, the media and all the coaching staff.JohnnyH2 said:The restrictions are as a result of the world we now live in, and people have the make as many adjustments to the routines as they can (look at the changes we now have in air travel).

As I've previously noted, if someone wanted to create a terrorist outrage at The Valley, nobody is checking the cars in the carpark, which are right next to the fanzone. Or the temporary catering venues etc6 -
I went to a small museum earlier this week. They had a small scanner machine. I’m sure the museum would find the costs you mention beyond them. So there are ways to do this.cafcfan said:

Terrible decision, came from work with laptop with rucksack - which used to be fine for them to check. Sent to long queue, nearly missed kick off - they searched the bags anyway..
Seems a very Roland-esque time money making scheme, while tickets are already extortionate for a mid week low crowd turnout4 -
Charge the fans £10 a time to have their bags x-rayed and will soon pay for itself 😉cafcfan said:

I had a very similar experience. To me the whole process appears to be haphazard. I have been into Wembley stadium, The O2, and Hammersmith Odeon, with my rucksack with all my medication to support my treatments, having got email authorisation. Under the Equality Act 2010 you cannot discriminate against people with chronic conditions. I wait to see what happens on Saturday v Portsmouth.Todds_right_hook said:I need a bag for medical reasons, I contacted the club in advance and they sent me a letter confirming exemption

Was it indoors though? In any event I doubt it was fully weatherproof and would need to be mobile so that you could store it (and its maybe 49 friends) somewhere where it wouldn't get nicked for the 99.74% of the time when it wasn't in use.iainment said:

turned up at the game from work and went into crossbars with my bag which contained my laptop only. bag searched all fine.
Tried to go in the turnstile and was told to go to the bag drop (I was completely unaware of this new policy)
went to the bag drop with around 10 other people in the same situation (7:15pm ish)
queued for bag drop and was told this would be £5 - and they were dumping the bags behind a desk in the crossbars reception (not really secure)
When I questioned this the steward said 'I agree this is a stupid policy' and they couldn't tell me when and how this was communicated
I didn't pay the £5 and just walked in through a different turnstile
I will be emailing a formal complaint about the lack of notice and around the process. If it was £5 to put your bag in a secure locker then maybe I would be comfortable with this, but my work laptop, just left behind a desk
