Who knew that something that is successful at club level would manifest itself in Test cricket? The keeper standing up to medium pacers.
Stevo needs to come out of retirement!
The Aussies will be glad he never got a chance here.

"Stevo's gonna get yer" was frequently mentioned on a social media group of Aussie batters playing in the CC. In May 2021, Travis Head told Stevens about the group over a round of golf, boasting that he wouldn’t suffer the same fate. A few days later, Stevens bowled Head for a duck.
Travis Heads county stint for Sussex is one of the worst I've ever seen. Got dropped to the 2s at one stage and I don't think he got a 50.

Averages 43.08 in Test cricket and attributes it all to his spell at Sussex and facing Darren Stevens.

Another one of those decent innings by Gay, that never went on to be a career defining one. He still desperately needs the century that cements his place in the team.

Brook runs himself out for 75. That's 20 innings and more than 13 months since he scored a hundred but, in that time, he has hit seven 50s. Brain freeze has been the contributory factor in so many of those dismissals. At the age of 27 and given his experience and responsibilities as a senior member in the team, it's about time he put more value on his wicket.

I do think it's been difficult for him (and other batters) now that other teams have the keeper standing up a lot of the time.

Brook isn't unique in that respect. In this series, England's batters have got to 50 on 11 occasions and not converted once. Not being able to do that against a poor side like Pakistan is a concern.

And yet, with all these faults, he's still the number one ranked batter in Tests.

Root had a spell like that - his conversion rate was questioned for a while. Lots of 50's no hundreds. Questions over whether he deserved to be considered part of the fab 4. Then it suddenly came together again for him and he hit ton after ton.

I have a little bit of sympathy, as it's such a one sided series it's perhaps surprising that the batsmen aren't as focused as if they were facing Starc or Bumrah.

Test cricket shouldn't feel so inconsequential.
  • 453 all out. Interestingly the only players not to get into double figures were Cox and Root!

Obviously Archer doesn't want to be playing golf tomorrow !

The Warks CEO begged him to take it easy today, to get some decent play tomorrow.

I think he got one fifty eventually but his average was amongst the tailenders.

I was sitting next to a rather boastful Pakistan supporter at Lord's, who said he'd got 25 tickets for day 5 at Edgbaston.

I laughed and suggested day 5 was never happening and even if it did it could well be free entry.
But he wasn't having it.  :p
It will be lucky if it goes any later than tea on day 3.
When Pakistan were 0/2 in the first over after tea yesterday I wondered if it would even make a 3rd day.

Now almost at tea on day 3 & Pakistan are only 27 behind & looking likely to make us bat again.

They can't win it from here.. ...can they  ?

Fair play to the Pakistanis for putting up some resistance, assumed they’d fold again, especially after being 2 down for 0.

not looking good for next year's Ashes. Can't knock over the tail of a team that is bottom of the League table.

Why we always revert to short stuff to the tail so quickly I'll never know.  Hit the stumps!

Amazing knock from Razaullah on debut though, kid looks a real talent - 4 wickets bowling at 90, now whacking sixes everywhere.
  • What a stat:

Razaullah has hit as many sixes as Geoffrey Boycott did in his 108-Test career.

Now that Abbas is out, I'm expecting Razzaullah to come out of his shell and play a bit more expansively

And the Aussies lost at home to Bangladesh recently.

Memories of Headingley 1981. Didn't the Aussies need 130 to win ?
  • Been busy today, and amazed when catching up with the score on the radio in between.

Good for our bowlers to have a "humbling" day, as everyone was getting a bit ahead of themselves with how good the 4 man attack is, when they aren't at the 2005 quartet level yet. We aren't going to get seam friendly pitches everywhere we play.

Along with the ridiculous over use of the short balls, Lawrence seemed rather underused too. England at times can be horribly one dimensional, that's where Stephen Fleming can improve things you hope.

Indeed cricket these days can be horribly "by numbers", with matchups decided beforehand by the analysts, rather than instinct and intuition on the field.
  • Anyone know price they were at 0-2?

£116 has been traded on the Betfair Exchange at their ceiling price of 1000 (999/1) so an individual or individuals stand to win £58k should Pakistan win. They are currently 48 to lay so they could lay back enough to guarantee £1,100 on all options of Pakistan, England and the draw.
