POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Portsmouth: Saturday 12th September 2026: KO 15:00
Charlton looked to avenge last season’s poor results to this afternoon’s south coast visitors, Portsmouth. Millenic Alli makes a return to the starting eleven to face his former club (who they bizarrely mocked throughout), with Ivan Mesik coming in on the right for Amari’i Bell and Danny McNamara returning on the left, after suspension. Charlie Kelman returns from injury to take a place on the bench, with Micah Mbick missing out with a hamstring issue picked up in training. Miles Leaburn, who came off with a knock in the previous fixture, is fit to make the start, with Oliver Skipp and Conor Coventry having returned to their positions in the centre of midfield.
Charlton started well and continued to threaten throughout the first half. With Alli on the right and Campbell on the left, there was balance in attack, allowing Karlan Grant to provide a threat in behind the ever-industrious Miles Leaburn. Out of possession, Charlton contained Portsmouth well, limiting them to playing the ball around in largely non-threatening areas. They had some half-chances but nothing particularly threatening.
Charlton’s first shot came within the opening five minutes, but it was on about thirty minutes when a spell of very good chances should have put them in the lead. Karlan Grant forced a very good save when he drilled in a shot from about eight yards, coming in at the far post and getting on the end a Millenic Alli ball into the box. Just a minute or so later, Alli almost scored himself when Tyreece Campbell worked some space on the left and put in a cross to the back post. Alli attempted to cushion it into goal, but instead of knocking it down, he popped it over the bar. A minute into added time, Miles Leaburn out fought his marker to release Alli through the centre. Alli’s shot from just outside the box was comfortably saved and both sides went in even. Charlton will feel they should’ve been in front, having had all the real opportunities.
From the restart, Portsmouth started quickly, firing a shot in within their seconds. Arthur Okonkwo was alert to the danger and dddi very well to get down to his left and get his big left hand on it, then smother it before it went out. In the early period, Charlton had their own half-chances, with Grant and Skipp trying to engineer something in the box, after separate goalmouth scrambles.
By sixty minutes, Portsmouth began to dominate possession and dictate play. Charlton were noticeably fatigued. Leaburn had given so much and was clearly blowing, with Karlan Grant noticeably behind the pace. Tyreece Campbell and Millenic Alli had largely drifted out of influence. Defending deep, Charlton found it hard to maintain any kind of possession.
Yet it was Portsmouth that made the first changes. When Nathan Jones finally made his first attempt to influence things it was Charlie Kelman that replaced Alli. Kelman took up a position wide on the right, sometimes tucking in alongside Leaburn when we were on the front foot with Grant falling back out wide. Charlton then worked their way back into applying pressure. Karlan Grant found his second wind and Tyreece Campbell once again threatened with nearly every touch. The final ten minutes and three additional (which didn’t seem nearly enough) were mostly Charlton probing into the box. No breakthrough would be found and the match finished honours even.
Miles Leaburn worked tirelessly up front with little reward. The referees fail to protect him and a good penalty shout late in the second half could have been his just desserts for his tremendous workrate. Conor Coventry was excellent at both ends and Oliver Skipp put in a solid performance. A point’s a point. When it’s all said and done, though, there wasn’t enough for all three points and questions about our abilities to score goals remain.
Charlton 0 Portsmouth 0
Over to you.

Enjoyable overall. Can't say anyone had a poor game. Just tired and subs nowhere to be seen, over than kelman who i dont think touched the ball. Then it all boils down to a pen not given on Leaburn in the 88th minutes.13

It's taken a decade or so but that is what a proper Charlton midfield looks like

Must score at Cardiff next week.9

NJ only making one sub is ridiculous….could see players were tired…don’t think you can play Skipp and Cov together if u want to score28

1 goal in the last 4 games.Attacking display in 26/27 - meet attacking display 25/26.No lessons learned from last season.Winnable game that we couldn't get the 3 points from due to lack of quality and fitness.
So why on Earth did Jones only make one change? Mindblowing stuff.I'm sure he'll avoid that to only talk about the ref again though.19 -
I know we are not allowed to criticise the blessed Nathan but wtf was he doing (or actually not doing) today?
After an hour, half the team looked out on their feet. It desperately needed fresh legs. But the only sub he made came 14 mins from time. The other 8 just sat on the bench.
I really don’t understand this man sometimes.

I didn't see the game today, I followed online, but a few positives spring to mind:- it's a point we didn't get last season- another clean sheet- Millwall got pumped and Palace lost at home to Ipswich- we're 6th in the league after 7 games with a bunch of first team players injuredWe need to start scoring more though, hopefully that will come as players come back / get fit.25

Played well in the first half.
Played poorly in the second half.
Think we’re starting to see the impact of us not spending funds on a quality Number 10.
Guessing that Jones doesn’t trust lots of his subs bench after recent performances.12 -
The only concern I have is how much Nathan Jones appears to trust almost everyone he put on the bench today. Yeah the starting lineup was playing very well but it was clear he didn't think a fresh any of them except Kelman was better than a worn-out starter16
-
The performance in the first half was excellent, just couldn't find the back of the net which is definitely Nathan Jones' fault.
Questions have to be asked on why more subs weren't made in the second half, why hasn't Mwamba seen any football since West Brom? Is Nkeng ever going to make an appearance? I'm being told that he's "for the future" but we don't have any other winger if that's the case. Nkeng was the next best option after we couldn't get JRS over the line, so we don't have the luxury of him being for the future.6 -

The fact I'm disappointed we drew indicates how far we have come in a few seasons.Tired players at the end, least they now have a full week off before Cardiff.Should have grabbed one of those chances, but much and more entertaining than last few matches18

I don’t want to feel down because we’re in an absolute fantastic position, which I would have bitten your hand off at the beginning of the season to be in.
But I just can’t escape the feeling that at the moment all our performances have the same feel of last season and that’s going to catch up with us eventually.

One of the best CM displays in years and you come out with that? What exactly could they have done? Tell our forwards to cross and finish better, and say pretty please?ct_addick said:NJ only making one sub is ridiculous….could see players were tired…don’t think you can play Skipp and Cov together if u want to score29 -
Two nil-nils this week.
Wedneday: chalk
Today: cheese18 -
We should have been winning in the first half. Alli just had to keep his shot down. I think past 60 minutes we looked leggy. Understandably due to the unfair fixtures. Then we fought our way back and the ref didn't give the clearest penalty ever. I've had enough of them. Also I have mentioned this before but because Leaburn is big he gets no decisions. I think they ref by numbers. It has to be a major foul to be a penalty, big men are the foulers, they never get fouled. They don't really watch the game properly as missing that clear corner at the end showed.12

Very frustrating watch, should have been home and hosed by halftime, then looked like we were doing our best to throw it away at points in that second half.
Based on that showing we should finish comfortably higher than Pompey come May5 -
Can't fault the effort but like last season, we badly lack guile in the middle of the park to unlock teams.
Leaburn was sensational, Skipp very tidy and Coventry excellent.
Arthur also very good. You'd think Kaminski would've struggled with a few of those shots, crosses.
As for the officials, AGAIN...pass me a cat.

Well, I'm agreeing with you completely now Leuth. Not really sure why Skipp and Coventry are being digged out for no goals today, the front 4 are the ones who should be criticised if we aren't scoring goalsLeuth said:

NK and Knibbs have to be given a chance
Nathan has to make more changes
Disappointed with that, Portsmouth was there for the taking.

A fairly entertaining game.Ali had his chance to silence their chants but fluffed his lines.Leaburn looked to be fouled in equal proportion to the penalty against Stoke; a shame, as Kelman was on the pitch then for the penalty.
+ A shout out too Okonkwo who really adds some calm and quality.14 -
After my earlier rant about the lack of subs, can I add a couple of other things.
A really good performance in the first half with some lovely flowing football. But we could easily have lost that in the second.
Leaburn had a great game. And how on earth was that push on him not a penalty?
But MOTM for me was Coventry. His passing was just sublime today with balls being sprayed around brilliantly. And his partner in midfield Skipp also had a really good game.
Okonkwo continues to impress in goal. He just looks so calm. How on earth Wrexham have let him go is beyond me.
Oh well, we're still in the play off spots!13 -
Peter Kay asked Leaburn if it was a pen and he said “ yeah he pushed me in the back “

Always going to be tough today given our schedule but we deserved to edge it , but last 20/25 was a real battle but we held firm surprised Pompey never used their free week buy putting us under more pressure .. but another point and one defeat in 7 .. keep going boys

Please, please, please Nathan ...
In your post-match interview for TV etc wear Harvey the mascot's head.14 -
Same type of player….Cov played well and Skipp was ok….great tackle to stop a breakaway….but who is going to play the creative role?Leuth said:

Should have won but a decent performance overall. Players do look shattered though and doesn’t bode well for quality off the bench when NJ isn’t willing to even try them. Thought Skipp was excellent.3

Don't think we can overestimate how important a couple of clean sheets are before the international break. Particularly in this new setup and moving away from the back 5.
Win would have been nice but a clean sheet is next best.
Week break now and then the international break after which we should be a different prospect.13 -
Disappointed tbh 2 homes games no goals and 2 points ,and now only 2 goals in 5 games same issue as last season6
-
Played very well and don’t take our chances.Proper keeper kept us in it - yet again.0
