Anyone fancy Elliott Lee for the 10 role?
    Free agent, still only 31.
I know he blew hot and cold last time around, but he's now more experienced and would be slotting into a better side.
We've struck gold with Arthur and Cody wasn't too bad either!
Absolutely not. Wasn't good enough when he was here and would be worse now.

I'm amazed how many posters on here know so much about Jordan Holsgrove, who unlike his dad Paul, Grandad John and Uncle Lee, has never played in England.

Are Portuguese Matches shown in the UK ? I doubt if anyone on here has seen more that a few clips of him ? Suddenly a dozen come out the woodwork to say their best mate is an Estoril FC fan and his passing is fantastic; his stats say he can pass.

The word had it that he didn't fancy Charlton which I can't blame him for because like all cults its hard to escape from and I have read the small print of my supporters contract and I'm here until I expire.

How much would a creative number 8 cost as opposed to the double divot of Skipp and Coventry who are both 6's, (talking in the vernacular.)

I had a fantastic view of the game from on high and I would've gambled against Pompey with Carey as the shadow striker number 10  with a dozen or so minutes to go as we had them on the ropes and Sonny can still have a bang better than most(I'm still talking football) on the edge of the box or he may of lost his marker in the box to silence his critics( at least for one match)

I was very impressed with the 1st half and how we hit the target or should that be the keeper with our shots but definitely a big improvement on the QPR game when we hardly got a kick for large periods of the match and had to rely on their profligacy in front of goal.

We now have a full week of training to practice hitting the onion bag before the trip to a foreign country where Nathan should be treated with respect by the Cardiff fans; being one of the Jones boys from Blaenrhondda.

Plenty of room for improvement but being 6th isn't too shabby after 7 matches though this is helped by Saints/Sinners being docked points and Wolves having just played 6 games.

Firstly, we can't sign anyone because we're at the squad limit so it's a non starter. Secondly, he's just come off a distinctly average loan spell in League One after being distinctly average in League One the previous season
Shal we put you down as a "maybe"?

Wasn't sure, watching live, that it was a penalty on Miles but watching Braziliance's vlog it clearly shows that it should have been given.

I've only seen the incident in real time - not seen any footage since I got home - and I was about 15 yards to Braz's left on the back row.

    My initial reaction was penalty.

My second reaction was the referee's a ****.

What £39.50 a ticket gets you. 18,836 for a Saturday game against Pompey, with a full away, is terrible, especially considering the start we have made.
Where's BazBalls when you need him most.

    The positives - 👍🏻

    - Cov & Skipp, great midfield duo
    - Okonkwo, proper keeper
    - More football on the grass, less long balls
    - clean sheets back to back
    - TC & Miles are consistently good at this level now
    - Sitting pretty in 6th
    - Most of the starting XI are good  champ players

    The negatives - 👎🏻

    - Poor home turnout, ticket prices are a joke
    - Dreadful match officials, 4 points lost so far
    - Tyler Bindon, looks very weak & calamitous
    - Lack of clear cut chances, need a creative 10
    - Lack of bench options to change the game

I thought Grant was good in the 10, picked up little pockets of space well and linked well with the wide players. Not perfect but definitely our best performance from a starting 10 this season

Our problem will be signing a creative number 10 that can also do what we need without the ball. On our budget I think it’s unlikely, we have Costello who is creative but can’t run. We have Carey who can run but isn’t creative. Can we afford a player that can do both? Unlikely. I still want to see Mwamba given a go there from the start to see if he can tick both of those boxes

First of all wow that many thumbs up and down is an eye sore, swift edit 😂

I like Grant a lot. Proper smart player, this is definitely his level, but I think he's a bit square peg in a round hole.

He doesn't really have pace, doesn't have the best shooting technique, doesn't pass that well. His best asset is probably his movement, vision (let down by passing) and his strength. I don't see him as a 10 at all, but fortunately for him, no one seems good enough to claim that spot.

You say that, but there will be players capable of doing that on a budget, otherwise no one would be able to have those players other than your top clubs.

I refuse to believe there isn't a player out there who can play the full 90, has a bit about him and is affordable. There are just too many possibilities for a player like that not to exist. It's just up to our recruitment team to find that player.

Either way it's a steady building process and I am currently very satisfied with where Charlton are.

It's the best our squad has been imo since the 2014/15 season. We are so close to becoming a regular top half championship side.

They don’t if we look at the teams we were expected to finish around. I can’t name you a single one of those clubs who have a creative pressing No.10 who is at a very good level that didn’t cost an absurd amount or on big wages.

Very similar to what we have a player with some good attributes but lacking in other areas.

How much would a creative number 8 cost as opposed to the double divot of Skipp and Coventry who are both 6's

This is a misrepresentation of the issue. A creative midfielder would replace neither Coventry nor Skipp, who are building  an effective partnership. He would replace Grant to play behind the striker, allowing Grant to play on the right instead of Alli who is only  good for 15 minutes per match. Hopefully we will later sign a new right-sided player, allowing Grant to relieve any of the front four as required,

You don't want this creative player to be an 8 so how much is this creative goal scoring number 10 going to cost in January because our lone striker Leaburn hasn't scored yet despite playing so well.

I thought our shape was good 1st half and Alli did show promise despite the miss and made the pass of the game in the 1st half when he hit a 40 yard cross ball to TC over onto the left wing.

The 10 (shadow striker) needs to be a goal scorer and not just this slick passes of a football.
  • I'm sure we've been through this on another thread in the not-too-distant past but in more recent times the numbers equated to:

    Old-school "WM"

    1 GK

    2,3 Full backs

    4,5,6 Half backs

    8,10 Inside forwards

    7,11 Wingers

    9 Striker

    4-4-2

    1 GK

    2,3 Full backs
    5,6 Centre-backs

    7 Right wing
    4,8 Central midfield
    11 Left Wing

    9 Target striker ("big man")
    10 Second striker ("small man")

If you were playing five at the back (flat five or wing-backs) then 4 would be the extra centre back and if you were only playing with one main striker then 10 would be dropping back into midfield.

I know it's become fashionable to refer to refer to old-school squad numbers when talking about a position but given those numbers have often meant different things down the years I find it's easier to think of five lines of positions in front of the keeper:

    GK

    Full back line

    Half-back line

    Midfield line

    Half-forward line

    (Full) Forward line

Looking at similar teams to us, there isn’t really. The top teams have these players, teams like us have players that have good attributes but can’t do it all in that 10 position (and elsewhere in other positions on the pitch it’s mostly the same story)

The only clear example I can see is Segecic who played for Pompey on Saturday. A Croatian they plucked from the Australian league. We know from our own experience that overseas signings are not the easiest and take time to adapt. I really don’t think us signing this type of player is as easy as you’re making it out to be when you have a budget like ours. The recruitment team will probably have to find a hidden gem for it to happen

Yet another result corrupted by inept officials.
Any contact from behind, however gentle, however accidental, however minimal the impediment to the victim results in a free kick for the infringement countless times in every match.
But not of course in the penalty area when a striker has a chance to score.
Kitchen was guilty of this heinous dumfuckery.
The pompey bloke stuck two hands in the small of Miles's back.
Whether it was forceful enough to impede him let alone tip him over IS IRRELEVANT.
Coventry bumped into a slowing opponent moments later and obviously loud blast on the whistle - free kick Portsmouth.
Oli Skipp comically dropped to his knees, falling over the ball after a featherlight touch from behind by an opponent, Kitchen shrugged and reluctantly gave Charlton the free kick, because being challenged from behind with no contact on the ball by the challenger is a transgression for which a free kick is prescribed.

Whether the chosen Addick would have scored is not guaranteed of course but Kitchen erased the integrity of the game by denying us that chance.  Just as Wednesday night's disgrace to the game did with the late pull back on Karlan Grant.

These game ruining lowlifes need calling out for their corruption, each and every time they choose to fuck up what we pay so much money to go and see.

Not that it bothers me much...😂

I expect my winger to be able at least to get the ball past the first man few times during the game .. he our main creative player now we are told in his fav position ….. but the weekend he was sadly  lacking … …… seen to many excellent wingers at Charlton ..From Glover to Kenning , Powell Flanagan Robinson  Newton … Campbell not in the same solar system as these …. He needs to improve his crossing urgently

Campbell’s crossing on Saturday was very good. Put plenty of dangerous balls into the box that set up chances or caused confusion in their defence. If Alli could finish an easy chance he’d have got himself a deserved assist

It's been disappointing that we haven't seen anything from Sonny and Knibbs is still deemed not going to contribute at the moment. I'd hoped they'd share that role this season.

I don't think they're corrupt, just brain dead -the act of getting yourself in front of an oncoming defender, slowing down so he has to run into you, feeling the slightest touch and going down like a sack of shit is one of the most regular and annoying guaranteed free kicks in the game today - pathetic. Just like the shit about 'he didn't pull him enough' or ' he only had his arms round him for 3 seconds rather than 4' F**king rubbish - shouldn't be grey areas with this crap - give free kicks for it or don't - its not difficult - pull somebody or hug somebody and its a foul - deliberately slow down so an oncoming defender runs into the back of you and its obstruction and a free kick to the defender - very very simple. Refs and lino's are getting worse as are the rules they have to try and follow

Getting really fed up with watching teams target Leaburn, week after week.  They can't cope with him and just resort to constant fouls everytime he gets the ball yet he gets absolutely zero protection from the referees.
Stoke was the absolute nadir of that, especially when Madley then booked Leaburn first.  It's a disgrace really.
Leaburn was superb today, hopefully he can get himself into a goal scoring groove, if he could get 12-15 this season we would have a very very valuable player on our hands.
Campbell was excellent too, swung a great ball for Alli to score (but he didn't), and put lots of other decent balls in. He isn't perfect but if he was he wouldn't have with us.
Thought Skipp and Coventry looked excellent together.  We badly miss a good number 10, Grant, JRC, Knibbs, Carey; none are good enough sadly.  Hopefully we find a way to fix that in January.
We have had an excellent start to the season.
No chance Leaburn is getting anywhere near 12-15 goals. 7 games in = 0 goals. Not his fault really because he spends much of his time battling 2 defenders about 40 yards from goal. Even Kane would struggle to score in our team.

I'd be surprised if any of our strikers score more than between 6 & 8 this season. Double figures is a pipe dream.
Instead of constantly slamming the club...try and educate yourself a bit about football. How about this for some perspective?

Most of us were surprised that Jones didn't change the midfield from about 60 mins onwards.

In his defence he changed it for Stoke and we were walloped. (Just saying).

NB from the middle of the Upper Covered End, Leaburns's was a nailed on penalty and then corner shortly after. However, as usual having seen the 15 min highlights on Sky, Leaburn was shoved in the back, but he could have stayed on his feet and did make a meal of it.

Plus he was scrapping with the Pompey defender not long before.

I've not heard of a fan that would disagree, but Charlton have now had numerous windows to address this and have not.

Only reason I can think of for the lack of subs was that NJ wanted to get a full 90 minutes into a lot of those legs, to try to build match fitness up to the next level.
I think we need to persevere with Alli. First half he was excellent, good effort just before HT as well.
Good to see Skip settling in nicely and Cov's game has moved up a level this season.
Defensively and in midfield, I think we'll be fine. But something needs to click up front, ATM something is lacking, and I think we are definitely one quality player short in that department.
Nothing to do with playing reserves at Spurs and getting stuffed or changing the midfield at Stoke and getting stuffed?

    Chalobah is a big miss.
Can't agree when Skipp and Coventry were our two best players
Imagine if we had the three to choose from though
Then some people will still say we should play with Cov & Skipp and be happy with no creative midfielder.
I take it you didn’t see Skipps pass for the TC “offside” goal in the week then? Or Coventry opening up the space for a goal earlier in the season? I know you didn’t see any of the creative work they did today because you didn’t watch the match but still want to criticise them!
I really do love the way you (and a few others) continually pick over my posts & get it wrong.

No where in that post did I criticise either Coventry or Skipp. I merely pointed out that if you are going to play Chalobah then one of them has to drop out.

But you carry on with your agenda.
So nobody is “picking” on you - they are responding to what are I think deliberately provocative, relentlessly nagative, narcissistic, and mostly incorrect posts, which seem to delight in any perceived mistakes and even dig out the team and manager when they have won and put in a good shift. If anyone has an agenda I think it’s you. You have deliberately and systematically cast yourself as a pantomime villain without any conspiracy from other posters. You post to provoke and it’s very clear you seem to enjoy mixing it and somehow enjoy others mostly negative responses, although how and why is beyond me. Trolls gotta troll I guess.

Perhaps we should all stop responding to you and you might stop.

Don’t feed the troll - Which you are the definition of by the way.

    Bravo and absolutely correct.

This has been a very well balanced and adult thread in the main, apart from Golfie who has gone out of his way on so many occasions to be a disruptor and he didn't even watch the game.
