Oh I love the Guardhouse, I can get a lovely glass of wine which doesn’t make me gag. Best wine in the area.

Sad it’s up for sale. I won’t go back to queuing in the Dial Arch.
    Queuing? In a pub?

The Connaught estate was built on the site of Connaught Barracks.
My dear old Dad was a RMP ( London Provost Company) and his office/ guard room was in the Connaught.
He met my Mum at a dance ( She worked in the Arsenal) at Woolwich Town Hall.
He was a scouser and loved a scrap , so being a RMP in Woolwich suited him down to the ground.
Loved the Army/ Navy Rugby game, he would go toe to toe with the Navy Regulators. But he always had a strong sense of fairness.
But he made Woolwich his home, he was on Plumstead Common watching a game of bowls, in his late 70s when two Herbert’s tried to mugger him.
(Both white lads ) he broke his walking stick hitting the tallest and the other he couldn’t catch up with the other.

If you don’t drink in there as you dislike it, you might not have heard. But it is not a secret and it has been for quite a while now.

I think I would go upstairs if I managed to get a ticket to see him. Do you go to the comedy nights often?

Going Kings Arms Bexleyheath tonight (on the roof)  and we go most months to The Star. The MC and artist booker for both is one of our own, the great Tom Toal.

Different pub. The Ordnance/Gun Pit/O’Connors is on the front of the road, opposite the Arsenal.  The Bull Tavern is/was around the corner in Vincent Road.

The Ordnance has been ripped out and poshed up waiting for something like a Pret or a coffee shop to take on the lease. I don’t think it will be a pub again.

Yeah, trundled by that the other day and thought the same. 2002 World Cup in The Bull was amazing. Though the body clock became a bit disjointed

Surprised she hasn’t closed the pub early.

Apparently the rent / lease is £75k a year.

IIRC part of the condition of the planning permission to turn the upstairs into a hotel was the ground floor would be retained as a pub/restaurant.

Yes B.  She was working in Roses, often doing the Tuesday night shift. We’d pop in after Charlton games and she’d be calling last orders at 10 because it had been quiet and she wanted to go home.  The look we’d get if we walked in just before 10.  Didn’t bother a couple of times when the roadworks delayed us getting back.  Had a word with the manager who told her she was employed to be there til gone 11.  Thankfully, no longer a problem.

I realise now that is The Bull. Wasn't it supposed to be rebuilt? I used to drink in what was called the Little Bull in Wilmount Street. Maybe called Princess of Wales.

The original plan was for the building to remain and become a concierge office for the flats that are due to go up behind it and along Vincent Street. Somewhere along the line, that’s gone out the window and they’ve demolished it. It’s hard enough for pubs these days, but local councils really don’t help at all.

Try connault estate back in the day.
I was a paper boy from WH Smith in Woolwich Arsenal station and I had the Connault as part of my round.
People used to put the money out for the milkman by the empty bottles.

The money was going missing and I was turned over by a young PC investigating this crime.
Searched me from head to toe.
But I was as clean as a whistle.
Got stopped twice in as weeks.
Turned out a crooked milkman was binning the money and not knocking it off the bill.

I used to have to do deliveries on the Aylesbury Estate back in the 90s.
At the time, the Royal Mail and the Police wouldn't go on there.
  • I read in todays Mirror that the first Spion Kop in football was that of Woolwich Arsenal.

Woolwich Arsenal's steep earth banking at the Manor Ground was the very first terrace in English football to be nicknamed "Spion Kop", with the name coined in 1904—two full years before Liverpool's Anfield Kop was built and named in 1906

The club built a steep, towering new earth terrace to boost capacity for their 1904 promotion to the First Division, local fans and returning soldiers noted its sharp, brutal incline. They remarked that standing on the steep bank looked just like the soldiers clustered on the hilltop during the Battle of Spion Kop (fought in 1900 during the Second Boer War in South Africa).

It is being marketed as a restaurant but hardly attractive at the amount being asked.

Slightly off the topic of pubs, but I like the swimming pool that’s opened up there by the square.  Take my boys there, and we come all the way over from Shirley/west wickham

It’s a good setup for their ages

ate in that Chinese restaurant by the new build flats called Jinshi yesterday.  Not bad either

One of my colleagues is Chinese/italian, mentioned I lived in Woolwich and she said Jinshi has got quite a bit of buzz from the Chinese expat community. The culinary scene in Woolwich does punch above its weight.
