I’d like to see a 4-4-2 with this squad but it’s a system that’s gone out of fashion for overly complex ideas for a simple game.

    Okonkwo

    McNamara/Ramsay
    Jones
    Koumetio
    Mesik

    Grant
    Coventry
    Skipp/Mwamba/JRC
    Campbell

    Leaburn
    Kelman

4-4-2 would be something that fits the squad and players we have, but it definitely doesn’t fit us wanting to see better football.

If we play a 4-4-2 with our midfield 2 against most teams in the championship that play 3 in there, then we will surrender control of the ball even more than we do already, and play even more direct with less midfield to play through. We’d have to sit behind the ball and hit teams on the break being more direct

4-4-2 went out of fashion because teams with 3 man midfields would dominate possession against it. Fair enough if that’s what you want to see but from what everyone else is saying about our football it probably isn’t going to be popular

Funnily enough Blackpool played a 442 like system under Steve Bruce with Sonny Carey coming inside to make a midfield 3 and Rob Apter playing a bit deeper, it's surely why NJ thought he could convert him to a RWB. We can't really do that though because Carey would have to be on the left of the 4 and that means moving and nullifying TC

This feels like a very dated descriptor that some of the Gen Z kids on here won’t understand, could we call him a Klarna manager instead?

We could use that general lopsided 442 idea though, with TC as a proper winger on the left, and Carey on the right with more defensive responsibility,  but with a licence to bomb forward occasionally as he likes to do. Wasn't that sort of what we did back in the days of Graham Stuart?

We could but it works less well with Carey being right footed

Saying that QPR set up in a 442 against us and had 72% possession. That being said seeing how Coventry and Skipp get so overrun with a AM ahead of them, if we remove that extra option ahead of them they would get absolutely battered
  • As much as I am a fan of Jones after what he has done, I think there will be a parting of the ways if we are bottom 3 after 15 games.
Your view from last May, may well come to fruition!

Also I am not sure giving Carey defensive responsibilities is a good idea.

Which successfull managers are not  cheque book managers?
Plenty. Success is relative. Curbishley and Bowyer just two examples at our own club.
Ok but they had much better players relative to the leagues the were successful in , we do not have that and the only way to get that is by getting the cheque book out.

They also have much better players in possession than we do. When they play 4-4-2 against other teams they don’t have more of the ball (15th in the league for possession)

I have always thought a good barometer for a season is the table at 15 games.
