‘Be Ready’ campaign - just in case

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cred3xnj0j0qo

Browsing through the news I come across this little gem. First I’ve heard of the initiative. Do they know something we don’t?
What a great way to get people to panic buy 3 days worth of supplies.

I feel a bit different, as a huge believer in people taking responsibility for their own destiny I have resilience of long life food and fresh water.

I'm sure people who live in places that get affected by storms, floods, power cuts have too. Hopefully they haven't spanked any money on this as its essentially saying "you are an adult, don't be a state-supported baby, have a few tins of food and bottles of water stashed somewhere indoors in case shit goes down"

Here in the western US, in particular Oregon where I live, I think they recommend having something like 5 days of food and water on hand in case of natural disasters, particularly earthquakes and wildfires. So I'm a little bit sympathetic to this initiative. Especially with a changing climate, natural disasters are going to be more common and more severe. I think there are worse ideas than having those things on hand.

I know someone who lives in the arse end of France and they popped up on a WhatsApp group earlier essentially calling us UK-dwellers thickos for having to have the current situation and resilience explained. I was nodding along and agreeing with everything he said.

    Still called him a frog-dephiling, cheese-stinking traitor

I've got a full fridge and freezer and tins in the garage.
I could last a good while as long as we have water & electricity.

It's good advice and common sense.
  • Ireland, Netherlands and plenty of other European countries have had similar advice published for ages. I see no reason why the UK shouldn't follow in their footsteps.

It's not scaremongering, it's just sensible.

Surely most people have 3 days worth of food at home, nothing to do with common sense.. just weekly shopping

Because it’s connected to climate change, the situation in Palestine, the war in Iran and the war in Ukraine. All of which have been caused by political decisions about the environment, fossil fuels, the rights of Palestinians and national autonomy in Ukraine.

You could say it's a result of political decisions, but in itslef it isn't political is it, buying pot noodles isn't a political act or decision.

Perhaps everyone could be provided with these from the local councils. If it's that important then everyone should have a 'just in case' pack.

If we veer off into that stuff, it would be. Discussion of useful essentials, helpful hints and possible pitfalls is fine.

Surely most people have enough food in their house to last three days, if they were desperate?

One obvious thing, is that if the power goes out, there's no point having food that requires cooking if you've only got a microwave, an air fryer or an electric oven. However, if you've got a gas oven or hob, you may still be out of luck, depending on whether the ignition circuit runs off the mains, a battery or a piezoelectric thingy. It's worth finding out before you're scrabbling around in the dark trying to get the damn thing to light while dealing with hangry family members.

Indeed, it would be worth investing on a decent LED lamp and a camping stove with gas.

The list even includes extra medication - I must ask the GP to provide some for my emergency supplies. That'll go down well.

Yeah, you're right.  Surely everyone has three days' worth of food in their house.  That's non-perishable.  And doesn't need cooking. For each person.

And sufficient food for any pets they have.  And three litres of drinking water per day for each person in their house.  And hand sanitiser.  And wet wipes.  Hygiene products.  Bathroom products.  A torch - with spare batteries.  And spare blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing.  And a wind-up or battery-operated FM radio - with a list of all their local and national FM station frequencies. And charged power banks.  And an amount of cash in small currencies.  And paper copies of ID information, passports, driving licences, insurance details.  And a paper list of all the landline and mobile phone numbers they're ever likely to need.

    If they were desperate.
