Late in the second half I tried thinking of anything positive I could say about the game. I came up with two things: 1. With everyone leaving early, the roads home would be nice and easy. 2. The heated seats in my car would be a nice post match comfort. Sadly both of those were snatched away from me too.

As for the match, I think the most telling moment came in the 91st minute. It didn't affect the game at all but it's a good demonstration of how awful we are. With seven minutes left to play Norwich had a corner. They didn't have one single man in our box when they took it. So comfortable were they (a team that had lost five on the spin) that there was absolutely no need for them to even feign an attack. And who can blame them. From the twentieth minute on, we were absolutely pathetic.

Lloyd Jones won the short straw man of the match today and you could see he hated every minute of it .
LJ in a 4 is not working, and puts pressure on Billy who had hapless JE outside him. It's  a shame Sichenze is out for the season. Kelman, Mesik and Mwambe must start. Why has our £1m winger had zero minutes, nor any U21 games when Grant and Alli is misfiring, with Rueben Reid not even in squad?

Lino for offside was guessing even without the OG. Kelman was in front of the two defenders behind him but blocking the view of the defender in front of him, whose foot was backwards of Charlie's, not withstanding the other more forward defender whose foot was on the line, whereas none of CKs body was. VAR would have given a goal. I don't expect officials to study feet positions, but I do think they should know which player put the ball in the net. The rules say such decisions should favour the attacker.

Just listened to NJ's post-match. It's the same every week. "We do X on the training ground and then do something different in the match. It's not good enough and something has to change."  Then comments about how the side who have just beaten us have been in the Premier League more recently than us.

I felt for the first time today in the final 15 minutes the first signs of real discontent started among the fans. Not with the scoreline but with the week-in, week-out performances which are increasingly hard to watch.  IT's increasingly hard to see how this side has the collective ability to keep us up.

Really looking forward to a 17 hour round trip to middlesborough next week and 6-0 defeat !!!

Why did i book it ?

Maybe it was because of the excellent away performances at Cardiff and Watford that i experienced.

    I guess i must be a masocist

We are in rinse and repeat territory.

It’s clear we attempt to play a game approach at home that our players can only sustain for 15-20 minutes. It falls apart quickly far too frequently for it to be a one off.

So are we asking them to play an unrealistic approach that is not tactically sustainable. Or are they just simply not good enough and can’t maintain it for more than that length of time?

I always say football is largely dictated by small margins. TC cuts inside and it edges of their defender just wide of post. They do the same and Mesik OGs.

But I’m not sure it’s the full story here. We are chasing games too frequently, poor in possession too frequently, and now defensively flakey.

    Big red flags being raised.
Not good enough being good requires your best performance game after game, not one in every blue moon.

It's impressive the way we can make teams look terrified for twenty minutes when we're at home. Then we invite them back into the game for however long it takes for them to score.

So avoidable. We have to look at the players more than the manager in that regard imo. It's difficult to say our tactics are poor when we can be that good for small periods of games.

That was about as dispiriting as it comes. Other than a good first 20 minutes and decent performances from Campbell and Kelman, there were no real positives.

We are heading inexorably into a relegation dogfight. In fairness to Nathan Jones, what could any manager realistically do with this squad ? Poor recruitment has put us in big trouble - in summer 25, we signed 4 League 1 men who have failed to step up, plus Rankin-Costello and Kaminski; last summer, the owners declined to put their hands in their pockets and spent only £1.5 million net, including spunking £1 million on Ali, presumably on the misguided assumption that TC was off. The owners clearly have no appetite for what is required in this division..

The problem since our League 1 promotion season has been the midfield, but all Jones got this summer was two underperforming loanees, one of whom has apparently done a bunk.

    We are in big trouble.
Straight after the play off final (in the fan zone ?) didnt NJ say the owners had millions to spend, or something like that.
The mood has long gone and changed since then.

We looked a mid level L1 team today.

First 20 minutes great then we withdrew and rest is history. Defensively we look so ropey compared to last season

Last season against two sides in disarray we would've won these but not now. 5 points since September it's not good enough anyway you look at it

Agree, strange signing not to use him at all.

    Terrible.
Ending the match with a midfield trio of Knibbs, an 18 year old and league 2 level R-C, explains the problem.
First 20 minutes were the highlight, but even then Norwich cut through us easily 2 or 3 times.

Last season I wasn’t surprised we knicked a result, this season I think we are going to get absolutely pumped!!, we will have about 8 defenders on the pitch next week

Serious question - anyone on here in the know about what they actually do do in training? Performance stats in training seems to be a reason why NJ picks some and not others but there’s no sign of what we would have understood years ago to have been done in “training” - eg tactics, free kick routines, penalties, how to kick a dead ball, how to take a corner etc.

Although I guess relying on recorded interview transcripts and not bothering to proof them before publishing is a fair reflection of the lack of effort the team put in today.

Got to forget this idea of being more expansive. If you don't have the players to do it then don't do it. It's like the fad of playing out from the back. If your defenders aren't comfortable on the ball and your midfield doesn't show for the easy pass out then you are just inviting trouble.
LJ is looking increasingly worse in a back four and we have gone from a side that is tough to score against to one that is easy to create chance after chance against. Our midfield comes off second best game in, game out.
If we don't return to three centre-backs and make ourselves harder to play against then we are only going one way and that is back down to League One.

    A disappointing day.

    But there are always positives.

The kids' drawings of First team players were sensational.  See how many you can get.

To help, today's starting line-up is at the beginning of the top row.

It's an AI transcription. Welcome to the future. Perhaps we can get an AI manager?

Not sure the owners will want to pay him off to leave to be honest. Wasn’t it a 4 year contract?

I feel as low as I have for a while with the club at the moment. We have no identity and no backbone.

I gather contracts normally are paid off over a period of time rather than in one hit, so that could ease the financial burden.
One way or another the board have to consider they may have to take a hit, be it sacking Jones or risking relegation.

Players, coaches and manager are way too comfortable, judging by what we're seeing on the pitch. NJ can't change the players at this stage, but he can bring new coaches in, as standards need to be raised urgently.

Remove the social media BS for the rest of the year - all the distractions clearly need to go.
  • So if we didn’t know it before, we certainly know now. We are not good enough for this league. Although Jones brand of football isn’t good enough for this division, we have also been let down by our backers who seem to think they can somehow get a competitive team by buying at bargain basement prices. Such a shame that they don’t see that if they were willing to fund the team properly then you would get a better outcome. Good manager with good players normally gets good results. Good crowds then follow. Who would have thought ? I would have thought the Wembley play off final would have given a clue what is possible at this club. We are now at another crossroad . Either the owners recognise this way of running a club by  putting in the bare minimum is only going in one direction & that way isn’t up. Or they carry on with doing what they doing, & just let us slide back into Division One, a division where everyone probably hoped we wouldn’t see again for some considerable time & enthusiasm just drains away , with supporters deserting in their droves. If the board truly have any ambition for this club, then they thank Jones for a job well done by getting us back to the championship but we now need to go to the next level on our journey & bring in a next level manager who ideally plays a more attractive brand of football. As I’ve said before, I have no idea who that might be , but that’s not my job !  My job is to be a long suffering supporter who started supporting our club in 1967 so I do know what commitment looks like. I fear though what we will see is more of the same & the gradual decline back to Division one with all hope gone. Of course if we start winning again then the board are doing a wonderful job & Jones is the true messiah . Joking aside though I do fear for our club. I have yet to see a worse team than us in this division.

Agreed we need to go back to 3-5-2 with current squad. Mesik can cope and TC on his right foot can play WB with Miles and Charlie up top.  Campbell showed today that he can stretch defenders on the right as well, and he is clearly working on improving his left in training.

That performance was inexcusable, and I say it is totally down to Jones. I’ve been a defender of his up until now, but if there’s somebody the board thinks can do a better job, I would say it’s time to change.

    Positive from today -

Kelman looked sharp & took his goa excellently. Only him & Godden can finish like that. Unfortunately I don't think we'll see too much of Godden this season so will have to rely on Kelman staying fit & in the side.

    The Rest  -

Mesik should start over Edwards. Grant shouldn't be in the team & we desperately need someone on the right so TC is kept on the left.

And we need a coach who can teach how to cross. Only Mesik can put in dangerous crosses- TC's are always behind the forwards. Look at their 2nd goal (ok, woeful defending from us but we've just played 3 out of form / defensively fragile teams and not tested them).
