If we had Doc's leadership skills in the squad we would never have gone on a run where we only won one game in 10. I mean, we did last season when he was there and he got dropped because he wasn't playing well, much like he did the season before that in L1 where our winless streaks were kept down to more like 5 games, but still. I loved Doc but can we not start inventing narratives around former players who this exact forum deemed not good enough over the past two years? It's possible that we never win another game and it's entirely down to the Greg Docherty dressing room effect, but then there were plenty on here saying that Jones had lost the dressing room last season and we went on ti improve and stay up with no visible loss of cohesion. We're in a bad run and we really have to hope we can turn it round but I don't think magic captain Docherty and Jayden Fevrier's super feet would be making the difference this season.

I think it disappoints fans that the club captain exited without an official goodbye. He was an excellent conduit between the fans and the club, and the club has made a point of saying how ruthless it intends to be.

Most worryingly, he has been replaced by a (good) injury prone player on a one-year contract and two loanees, both of whom failed to make the squad yesterday for their own reasons.

I can understand fans searching for answers.
  • Team spirit seems to have suffered since he left. He seemed a popular guy at the training ground and always set a good example on the pitch.
Perhaps some of his former teammates are unhappy with the way he was treated.
  • Wonder what him and NJ could have fallen out over?

I am staggered that no one has picked him up. 100 per center.

Perhaps he tackled Chalobah in training and caused his layoff.

Free agent market seems particularly slow this season. The only signing of note I can remember is Antonio at Watford and he's not been playing

Feels like everyone has maxed out their squad limits so there's not so many opportunities for free agent signings. Was convinced Doc would go somewhere around the L1 promotion race.

Letting Doc slip away is looking increasingly like a duff call.
Chalobah was always going to be a risk and that's come home to roost big time.
    Ouma is a baffling blunder.
    Skipp was a panic signing.
Which leaves us with Coventry, who is all at sea without Doc or Chalobah; Nibbs, who NJ clearly loves but has underwhelmed throughout his tenure in SE7 and JRS who appears talented but looks like he's trying too hard when his own fragile fitness allows.
Expecting the very young and inexperienced Alan Mwamba to step straight up to Championship level is unfair.
Net result is a desperately poor midfield and NJ seems reluctant or unable to select players and tactics according to his meagre resources.

I assume you mean JRC rather than JRS.

In hindsight getting rid of Docherty seems a silly move but no one would be sat here complaining if we replaced him with someone not even good just someone average.

When we lost May we were crapping it that we lost our best player 6 months later no one could care less because we had Godden. Docherty is a bottom end champ midfielder/top end L1 player it’s impressive we somehow replaced him with 3 midfielders all of them have been worse in their own way

Alan Nixon reporting that Preston are interested in Doc so I think we can all assume he won’t be going there

Maybe Preston can have Ouma too, when we've found him.

Shame to let a dedicated bloke like him go for a waste of skin in Ouma.

I know we couldn't see the Ouma situation coming but it's a decision that has backfired.

I think in any event none of Doc's replacements have remotely held a candle to him. Even if he isn't the most technically accomplished player we've ever had he certainly ranks very high in the -give everything and never say die attitude- that most of us would associate with being a key ingredient in Charlton teams through the years.
The way he ran himself into the ground despite being in considerable pain against Hull that last home game of last season to get us over the line is indicative of what he brought to the club and I think that influence probably extended way beyond the pitch on  match days.
It's no coincidence that we haven''t been nearly.as good since he left in my humble opinion.

And a key ingredient in NJ teams which makes it all the more baffling?

I haven’t got the time to look back but I’m willing to bet there’s a high crossover between lifers who are saying we miss him and lifers who said at the end of the season that they would like him moved on. I could be wrong but it definitely feels like a “grass isn’t always greener” situation

The nightmare scenario is Preston sign him and he helps them stay up while we go down.

His footballing ability perhaps wasn’t quite good enough to take him to the next level, but his leadership and commitment are qualities that are sorely missed.

Can't say whether his leadership qualifies are missed because I'm not in the dressing room. I don't think this poor run is proof of us missing them either, because we had some awful, dejected runs with him around too.

Everyone is looking around for answers at the moment and the truth is, our central midfield was really poor with him in it, and is still really poor without him.

I’m probably the only one who would have kept him in May, but now think it was the right decision to move on from him

The problem wasn’t moving on from Docherty, it was not signing a good replacement
  • I think getting rid, before he even had another employer lined up, sent a terrible message to the rest of the squad, and it didn't recognise his huge contribution to the club.

Give 100% on the pitch every game
Work hard behind the scenes, community work etc
Be vocal on the pitch and off
Be a bright and bubbly character around the training ground

Do all that, but lack the skill and guile of a Claus Jenson or Di Canio, and you'll end up out of work.

Meanwhile someone like Burke picks up a very decent salary and has security, for what? The odd 20 minutes in an under 21's game.

Making it clear to him late in the window when other League One and Championship teams had already filled their 25 that he was not going to get a place in our 25 is really tough.

As it turns out giving that place to Ouma was not a good choice which has highlighted the issue.

Pretty sure it would have been made clear before that
