or simply dig a hole in your garden 6' x 2' x 4' deep and leave the excavated earth neatly heaped next to it with a shovel close by. Make sure its visible from his house.

If you are receiving unsavoury messages would it be a good idea to block him?
It seems you have bent over backwards for him and now you are getting this treatment which seems unfair.

My sympathies, neighbour agg is a misery
His change of attitude smacks loudly of some stirring shit getting in his ear and winding him up.
Best let that sleeping dog lie, we none of us need that energy in our lives.
Remain civil at all times but don't throw good money and energy after bad, leave him to stew in his own juice.

Had some more rather unpleasant messages over the weekend. At least I've worked out a little more on what his issues are:

    - his garden level is about 20cm lower than ours which does make it look taller from his side. This is absolutely valid and I completely understand this. But I don't see how we were expected to know this without it being raised at any point in the planning process. If he had raised it we would absolutely have found a way to compromise on it.
At least you've kept your sense of humour.

Unfortunately most neighbours are not friends.
Expect them to be w⚓️s when anything affects their life, or they perceive it to.
If you dont want the hassle, never buy a semi or terrace with any party walls, and live as far away from people as possible.
Even if the current neighbour is nice, the next one is likely to be a complete tosser.
I've had a handful that have been worth bothering with ,  and even then a hello and Xmas card, keep an eye out when they go awsy is as far as I go.
As for the current tosspot living next to you, don't bother with any more presents or favours.
Strictly professional, treat as the enemy, and don't do anything formal or start a legal process.

I'd suggest getting some cameras for the back and front to monitor your residence making sure you only cover your own land and make them discreet.
If it gets worse, don't do anything formal just sell up if it annoys you that much.
Selling up raises more problems. The buyers solicitor will ask about any disputes with the neighbours. Telling a fib can cause another headache.

There is no legal dispute as yet. So therefore one can answer to that effect. When it becomes formal and a legal process has started then one has to divulge.
If the old fart becomes more of a pain, who wants to live with that?

I'm a Local Authority Town Planner by trade. I've seen this many times.

Get your tape measure out to check the height and rearwards projection checked for peace of mind. because he's likely to raise a complaint with the council's Planning Enforcement Team.

Thanks. I had my tape out immediately he said anything it's bang on the plans. No issues there.

If you are good at topiary, fashion a large shrub or bush into a giant cock.
Buy some gnomes for the front garden, the ones with their middle fingers pointing up.
Buy a large barking dog and leave it in the back garden for an hour , three or four times a day.
Invite young family members around regularly. Provide fizzy pop, sweets and outdoor football, temporary swimming pool, trampoline etc.  Encourage them to make lots of noise.
Take up shammanic drumming from 0830 at least 3 days a week.
Airbnb your house and setup an outdoor sex swing for guests to use.

All of the above are perfectly likely to piss your neighbour off (although the last one is risky).

To quote Carlito - "A favour will get you killed faster than a bullet"

It may have paid off to have done absolutely zero from the get go and in fact been slightly cold to him if he raised it - the dynamic is now set - He feels he has the right to be angry and aggrieved and you are the apologising subservient.

Look him and eye and coldy say "We will never discuss any of this ever again" - Then never speak to him again.

So basically you knew that the flat roof was going to be visually unattractive, proceeded anyway as it was within the rules and better for you, and now as his plot is lower than you realised, its worse even than expected and you have ruined an old man's life?

This is clearly affecting canters, hence him original post and subsequent updates. I don’t think comments like this will help, even if was meant to be tongue in cheek
