Its pretty clear we were happy to do a deal for greg, but no one took it before the end of the window.  Thems the breaks in the world of professioanal football.
  • Letting doc go wasn’t the mistake as he wasn’t good enough for this level. The mistake was not getting our no 1 target (guy from Portugal, forgot his name), the mistakes were the panic buy replacements. Hopefully we are working on sending skipp and Timmy boy back and actually improving our squad

That wasn't a mistake though as we were after him for most of the window by all accounts, it wasn't like we made a bad offer then gave up. He wasn't interested and we couldn't make him sign.
The ones we did sign I agree turned out to be duds but again we didn't just sign one or the other and hope it would be okay, we went after both in the hope that at least one would come good.
We definitely need to change it up come January but I genuinely don't think its particular incompetence that lead us here, just several gambles that ALL failed to come off, which is at least in part bad luck.

Wasn't the rumour that Holsgrove wasn't keen on us as he thought we'd struggle? Well, we really showed him, didn't we.

Just spotted Greg Doherty in the National Railway museum. Nailed on for Preston on the other side of the country.

By various accounts on him I've read he's not that great a player either, if indeed he was the main target in the summer that was hint of the supermarkets we were shopping in!
    And then Ouma turned up...............
  • When all is said and done it's our scouting that has let us down massively since we went up. Other than a few we have not picked well.
Have to assume that Jones is heavily involved in this?
So much money wasted on players that obviously cannot cut it at this level. It's not just our budget or ownership issues either.
January will be key to staying up once again. Be interesting to see how the new CEO will manage any new money coming in......
Be very interesting to see how Lincoln and Bolton fare over the whole season? We should not be below them one year in.

I still dont think its the Recruitment that was the problem, its the expectation and lack of reality a lot of people are clearly living in now... The squad that got promoted from League One wasn't good enough to survive on its own in the Championship, it didn't just need a sprinkling of improvement as we were ahead of schedule and got promoted too early almost. It meant the squad needed quantity as well as quality.
Given the money pumped into the team, or lack of money both last summer, and this, has meant that Jones / Chapple have had to take more risks. No one could have known prior to signing Apter / Olaofe that they would struggle to step up or not, no one has that hindsight, but it was the risk we were forced to take with the majority of signings being picked from League One, because quite simply we cannot afford anything better. Lets be honest, both Jones / Chapple would have been lauded as geniuses had Apter / Olaofe etc. turned into signings that propelled us up the Division. Or do you genuinely think that the club thought: "Nah lets not bother going after established Championship players with perfect records, we'll try and be clever"
As for saying we shouldn't be below Lincoln / Bolton... am sure Oxford fans felt the same way about us last season.

  • Respect your input and opinion as always FA.  But I can't help thinking that we have made SO MANY very poor recruitment decisions that  goes way beyond just budgetary restraints?
I would have to query just how much better we might have done if let's say we had 20 million when we went up and another 20 million this year. I still reckon we might have largely blown it with many poor signings.
And to some extent I do think that Jones and Chapple tried to be a bit too clever and then had to put it right last January with a couple if serious established loans. The ssame for this year again I fear?

Statistically holsgrove was one of the best performing midfielders in Europe last season, and not in a bad league, either. I can see he didn’t get his big move to Germany, either.

he has a similar profile to skipp, which is probably why we brought him in in the end

When our scouts first became aware of Josh Edwards they were reported to be watching a striker called Bair who turned out to be out of our price range. Where is he now? I think either our scouts are not up to it or they are fishing at the bottom of the market.

We were looking at a different central defender at the same team when we saw Collins. Same with Billy Koumetio- we were originally after his centre back partner. There seems to be a theme here that scouting / watching matches in person is the way to uncover gems instead of relying too much on the same stats every other club accesses - and which only tell part of the story.
