Listening to Powell's interview on CAFC Player, he says he can't give Benson more than a year. Benson wanted to stay but Powell's giving him the option. Seems it's just down to Benson to decide between staying here or possibly taking a longer contract at Notts County.

If you'd like to submit a picture of yourself, you could feature as next weeks 'Would Ya'
Let me just iron my flat cap and wake the ferret up and I'll get the camera out.

Scoham, I've just listened to Powells interview on Charlton player and I get the impression this is far from a done deal.  I think if we offer him a 3 year deal then it might swing it, but if he wanted to commute I don't think Maddog will go for it.  We already have one player who commutes over 4 hours a day apparently and he said he didn't want that.

Also not sure that we will give him 3 years.  Maybe 2 with an option for a third based on targets?

I live on the edge of the Lincoln wolds and five miles from the coast. Several pro footballers (Forest, Leicester, Hull, Leeds, as well as Grimsby and Scunthorpe) live in the area. It makes Surrey look like Stepney and a house that might cost a million inside the M25 is yours for 400k. But dont tell Benson, i want him to stay right where he is

www.bennodontwannago.com  ....and who really wants to be managed by a man who revels in the nickname Maddog?.. from Sven to Ince to maddog .. how low can you go. Mind you Benson and Hughes could be an aging (to put it mildly) but effective strikeforce.
  • Well Martin Allen is clearly the reason he's even considering the move, plus there's a lot more to MA than meets the eye with this 'maddog image.

Think he's changed his game too, or rather the type of game he wants his teams to play.  He's aiming for a much more passing game this season.  Benno or no Benno, I'm looking foward to it.

Anyway, apart from the games against us, I wish you a successful season
  • You too.  I enjoyed the game at your place last year...even though we were robbed lol

I've always liked Allen. He's got his head screwed on and his a good manager at this level. Wouldn't want to upset him mind!

Sky reporting the deal has fallen through

Skysports.com understands Charlton striker Paul Benson's transfer to Notts County has fallen through.

    Benson: Could not agree terms
The 31-year-old was happy with the move and it was revealed earlier in the week that a fee had been set.
But personal terms could not be agreed between Bensonimage and County to suggest the deal will not materialise.
The forward scored 10 goals in 43 appearances last season, as Charlton finished 13th in League One.
Benson began his career at Dagenham & Redbridgeimage before moving to The Valley last August.

Not surprised, taken too long, so that's 2 players this summer who can't bear to leave the club ;-)

oh dear - looks like we're stuck with him for another year !!!!!

another greedy b*****t who is happy to take our (higher) wages for a year rather than lower ones  (?) for 2 years.

Glad. Clearly a good guy and could be a good player for us. Before BWP, he was our main man last year don't forget.

Powell doesn't want rid, where did the voices in your head tell you that?

If he didn't, we wouldn't have accepted the bid. Simple. I'm always right so its pointless trying to be smart with me.

Listening to Powell's interview on CAFC Player he said he couldn't offer Benson more than the year left on his contract so wanted to give him the choice.

Clearly Benson isn't a player for the long term. I think Powell is happy to keep him as 3rd or 4th choice but wouldn't stop him leaving if a good offer comes in.

If Powell wanted to get rid of him he wouldn't have played him in pre-season, just like he didn't play McCormack.
  • To be fair the whole thing has stunk of a financial decision whether it was the right one or not, I don't think Powell wants rid of him and agree with Scoham.

Powell in the interview after the Woking game said he didn't want him to go, but with a year left on his contract, he wouldn't block a move.

I should remember, never argue with idiots, they can never see when they're wrong

Happy to have him staying, depending on two factors:

    a. Does it scupper funding for someone CP had lined up and perhaps preferred?

    b. Will it affect his confidence, feelig as if he has to convince everyone all over again? Hopefully he'll apply himself the same way Francis did yesterday.

    What do You know.....
    I'm always right !

    D'oh !
  • The sticking point was the either the length of contract (he wanted 3 years we offered 2 years with option for a 3rd based on appearances in the 2nd year)  or that he wanted to commute and MA has already said he wants players living locally not commuting 5 hours a day as one player already does. Depends which version you choose!

It wasn't a lower wage.  I guess we either bite the bullet and offer him 3 years or move on to the next target.  That said 2 years with an option for a third seemed a pretty fair offer to me for a player who will be 32 in October.

Gutted he's not joining us though to be honest.

Nice to have your informed input Pie but I'm afraid it won't stop some calling him greedy etc if he hasn't got 25 by Christmas.
