Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.
A few Bristol City fans also surprised we haven't sold out.
We can't all be on holidays surely. Wembley there was a demand, we are in the big time now, would be nice to show it and back the team who have been so good for us for so long.
Not really comparing apples with apples here. School summer holidays started about 2 weeks ago so plenty of families will use this time to spend time together abroad, play offs were in May, hence the turnout with the added help of the occasion. Don't think it's fair to allude that people aren't backing the team...
It would take 8.5% of our Wembley turn out roughly to sell out Bristol City away.
If you are in a position where you can go, but you aren't, but you were one of the people demanding for a Wembley ticket, then I'll be blunt, you are in no position to talk. (If that doesn't apply to you or anyone reading this, then you shouldn't care)
My post obviously doesn't apply to people who can't go for valid reasons. Based on the demand for Wembley, first season back in the Champ, nice weather, Saturday 3pm kick off, and us spending a significant amount of money, the team should be backed.
As I always say, if this was Liverpool away or Man United, people would be asking for spares. It's just the truth.
You appear to have answered your own question. The allocation for Wembley was bolstered by wives, partners, parents, grandparents, grandchildren and friends. None of whom will have any intention of watching a league match at The Valley, let alone an away fixture.
However if we do get back in the Premiership or get a plum cup draw the demand will once again increase. All the time season ticket holders and members of other schemes are allowed to purchase 4 tickets you won’t stop it happening
I personally think the numbers for Bristol City are excellent.
Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.

You are correct, your comment doesn't apply to me. But I have empathy for those who would love to go but can't (financially, family holidays for those who only get the evening with their kids ordinarily with work and school etc.). Just because the owners have deep pockets and spend a few quid doesn't mean everyone else is able to! We'd all love a sold out away end week in week out but it isn't realistic and we've sold good numbers for this game, enjoy it instead of taking aim at the fans! There is a reason The Valley holds 27k and not the 40k we enjoyed at Wembley.
Other clubs in this league manage it.
We can't give it the big un' and have a circle jerk over Wembley but then not show out for League games.
Anyway it's clearly a sensitive topic, but that's my stance, if we sold out our allocation for Wembley and the play off games, we should easily be selling out our first away game after a promotion season.
If people think my view is strong, it is what it is. It doesn't apply to people who want to go but physically can't
Yes, definitely a sensitive topic for you to bring it up and clearly something that bothers you dearly. Should be a great weekend all round with the boys backed by a very packed away end! COYR!
Yes it bothers me that we can sell out Wembley multiple times, Man United away in the Carabao Cup but not a fairly easy away day to get to because the ocassion isn't as big.
I am an attendance snob and I don't hide it.
A fairly easy game to get to might be different to you than it is to others. Current return ticket price to Bristol is £78 + ticket circa £30, that's just for one person, now imagine the price of a family. In the height of a cost of living crisis, with some recently shelling out massive sums of their wages on a season ticket, I think our numbers are commendable. And if you look at the ticket site, I think you'll find most adult tickets are gone.
Just a little empathy I feel and perspective is needed here. As said, should be a great game with a very big backing! Enjoy it!
I think you're completely missing my point. I am very, very vocal about prices in football. I constantly flag about how overpriced season tickets are, constantly say how overpriced away tickets are, I have said before I sympathise with anybody who struggles with money as I know how hard it is.
My post directly and very obviously applies to anyone who would attend a bigger fixture but won't this one, they should be backing the team as it's how we will grow..
I refuse to believe all 40k and the extra demand of Charlton fans for Wembley are all on holiday, or don't have the money etc. I guarantee this would be a sell out if it was a prem team with prestige in an away tie.
Sorry but how can I make it clearer? I am excluding anyone who physically can't make it to the game for whatever reason, but there will be people out there who would be asking for a ticket for a more high profile game, but won't go to this one.
It is disappointing we can't manage between 7-9% or so of our Wembley attendance for an important game.
Wembley games are complete one offs support-wise - people being mates, some travel back from abroad, some bring family, lapsed fans return etc etc - forget the 40k+ Wembley demand, it is irrelevant to those that might travel to Bristol or not.
Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.

I get your point but you can't really compare it to Wembley where every man, woman and child turned up for a day out. Many (like myself) flew from overseas for it, because it was a final at Wembley and not a game in mid-August in Bristol.
We didn't even have 20k home fans on Saturday, so you can't compare our away numbers to the 40k at Wembley. Compare them to a % of the regular home support.
Anyone who went to Wembley and can go to this but isn't bothering should be given a lifetime banning order IMO. Quite frankly, they don't deserve to be able to watch the mighty Addicks!
Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.

I reckon that having approx 20% of our season ticket holders going to an away game, in the middle of August, is a good number. I think that imagining that Bristol City away has the same draw as Man Utd away is laughable...(personally, am lucky, was a season ticket holder throughout the premiership years, so I went to see Charlton play at all 'those' grounds....how many of our younger fans have had the chance to do so??...is it any wonder that matches like that are over subscribed??). I also don't get this 'if you can, you should' mentality... If I wasn't a reasonable person, I'd be telling someone who said that to me exactly where to go...whether they 'can' go and whether they 'want' to go are two completely different scenarios and is down to the individual concerned.....and if they want a ticket to a high profile match at a later date, so be it...they'll just have to wait in line until those who did go to these 'less glamorous' matches have had the chance to buy their tickets first... Am very jealous of all who are going to Bristol (unless they're surrounded by the people who surrounded me at Stockport...altho didn't see so many of them up at Carlisle...or Fleetwood...etc etc)...as it's a great city and should be a great match...unfortunately I'll have to be watching on TV...
A near sell out is fantastic support. Over 2k fans will still make a great amount of noise for the boys.
Im not a fan of using large one-off away attendances, like 9k at Old Trafford and 40k at Wembley, against fans every year. There's no need for it and they're also not comparable events. Those kind of games are always going to have a huge amount of appeal (I'd never been to an away game until Man Utd in '94 where I joined almost 11,000 other Charlton fans).
Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.

I spend a lot of time in Bristol for work, and it is a cracking city. A pub lovers paradise with some absolutely phenomenal drinking spots dotted around the city centre. With the weather as it is, Saturday will be a cracker
Same, down there every month - was praying this one would be a midweek…am on holiday this weekend

For anyone that fancies a day out in Bristol, if you can get there, I do actually have a spare ticket, message me if you're interested.
Plenty of tickets still in Block 35 and a few in 41.
Personal view, I think it’s a little disappointing given all that’s happened in the last 12 months that we took 2,700 to Reading in L1 this time last year and we are struggling to sell our allocation for first game back in the Champ.
Middle of August when a lot of people are still away on holiday and you're disappointed that we've sold about 2,400 tickets? Seems like pretty decent numbers to me.
As I said, just personal view, but yes, a little surprised. We sold out so many away ends last season, comfortably taking numbers like 2,800 to Peterborough, Reading etc that I thought they’d be huge enthusiasm for the opening away game that it would not even reach general sale (even accounting for holidays).
Still a good turnout and I’m sure will be a good atmosphere, I just anticipated higher demand all things considered
Reading and Peterborough are so much closer though, it’s an hour or so on the train compared to 3 hours plus travel to the ground
Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads takes only 95 minutes, Woolwich to Paddington 27 minutes one of the most straightforward trips of the season. Half-hourly service Paddington /Temple Meads. People using holidays as an excuse for non attendance, Watford sold out their allocation on Saturday as did Millwall at Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday at Leicester for example.
How many Charlton supporters who go away live in Woolwich, or Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley? Less than half I would think.
Do you think? Where are the majority of away followers travelling from then do you reckon, Kent?
It’s pretty clear Wembley was a one-off. My wife came for only her 3rd match in 40+ years because she wanted to A) go to Wembley and not miss Charlton’s big day. I doubt she’ll go to another match for years, she loved the whole day, but it was more an "Oasis"-style gig, a big day out, and we had a blast. Why we haven’t sold out away end at Ashton Gate? It will be lots of factors, its expensive, summer holidays, being on Charton TV/VPN, who knows? I get it. I’m picking my Away Days: hoping to go to all London derbies, plus Southampton, Boro, Pompey, Ipswich, Norwich, Leicester, enough for my wallet, with the rest watched from my sofa via Sky or Charlton TV. Each year I plan our family holiday before August and keep May free in case of play-offs, but everyone’s situation family, finances, health, work is different. For those of us going to Ashton Gate, let’s enjoy our first Championship Addicks away match in years, hopefully in glorious sunshine. COYA’s.

How many Charlton supporters who go away live in Woolwich, or Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley? Less than half I would think.
Do you think? Where are the majority of away followers travelling from then do you reckon, Kent?

Personally would love to go to Bristol...it's a cracking town and some awesome beer spots (hello Left handed Giant in particular), but it's too early in the season for me as am away :-( I am also a bit more wary on the going away now that I am 'getting older'...Stockport for instance was a nightmare, top row, behind the goal, surrounded by our idiot fans who wanted to fight with each other, berated anyway not shouting at the players, and all wanting to 'sit where they like'....while being abusive to the stewards...just not pleasant really...
I must have been very close to you - the hard boys giving it a bit of “we sit where we want”, and telling everyone within earshot that the stewards couldn’t move them…until the stewards who were bigger than them told them to move, at which point they seemed to forget how hard they were.
And it’s the truth that people should just stop f*cking telling other people how to support their club.
Don’t do many away games these days but was tempted by this, floated the idea amongst those I go with but he general consensus was to get qpr tickets instead - some chance of that !!

Don’t feed the troll, he could start a row in a phone box

For me an away game is the minimum of being a true fan. Ringfenced and all that malarkey…

However if we do get back in the Premiership or get a plum cup draw the demand will once again increase. All the time season ticket holders and members of other schemes are allowed to purchase 4 tickets you won’t stop it happening
I personally think the numbers for Bristol City are excellent.
We didn't even have 20k home fans on Saturday, so you can't compare our away numbers to the 40k at Wembley. Compare them to a % of the regular home support.
Enjoy your days.
Just think others should make the effort.
For anyone that fancies a day out in Bristol, if you can get there, I do actually have a spare ticket, message me if you're interested.

It’s pretty clear Wembley was a one-off. My wife came for only her 3rd match in 40+ years because she wanted to A) go to Wembley and
not miss Charlton’s big day. COYA’s.
