If only being a "true" fan could be measured purely by away matches attended, it’s not that simple. Using away attendance as a barometer ignores the many social and economic barriers: family, work shifts, childcare, travel, and match day costs. Personally, I don’t fancy trekking to Blackburn or Swansea, paying high train fares or driving long distances, then standing behind the goal in the away end when I prefer a halfway-line seat. I love going to the Valley and have had a season ticket for 40+ seasons but alot of time an Away Day experience leaves me disappointed, regardless of the result, its simply not as enjoyable. Fair play to those travelling far and wide, especially for long-distance midweek games. I’m only doing the Boro midweek trip this season to see a friend who supports them, otherwise I’d watch on TV. Onwards and upwards, looking forward to going to Ashton Gate on Saturday.
TRA, if this post is in response to my post about an "away game is the minimum of being a true fan" I fully agree with you. It was a sarcastic comment relating to other posters recent and historic statements on what constitutes a supporter based on their own criteria through which a bus can be driven.
Every fan has their own way of being a fan - some go home and away religiously, some pick and choose. Some buy season tickets, some don't. Some are lapsed, others are addicted. Some have found other things to do, and different life stages result in different levels of attendance. Some never attend games.
Any of these doesn't make anyone more or less a fan.
No, it doesn't but it might make you less of a supporter - how would the club survive if everybody just picked or choose their games? I've got a season ticket and have had for over 40 years but i'm quite willing to admit i'm not as big or true a supporter as a season ticket holder who goes to every away game , has valley gold, attends shitty early round cup (reserve ) games and pre season friendlies - i used to go away a bit more years ago as well - i was more of a supporter then but i'm no less of a fan now, i just don't support as much as i did. Boring now, its common sense.
Don’t do many away games these days but was tempted by this, floated the idea amongst those I go with but he general consensus was to get qpr tickets instead - some chance of that !!
For me an away game is the minimum of being a true fan. Ringfenced and all that malarkey…
Each to their own
How are all "True" fans meant to get to away games when the allocation for away games means not all fans can go.
Also how do you define "true" fans?
1) Don't know, what r u asking me for? 2) Don't know, what r u asking me for?
Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.
A few Bristol City fans also surprised we haven't sold out.
We can't all be on holidays surely. Wembley there was a demand, we are in the big time now, would be nice to show it and back the team who have been so good for us for so long.
Not really comparing apples with apples here. School summer holidays started about 2 weeks ago so plenty of families will use this time to spend time together abroad, play offs were in May, hence the turnout with the added help of the occasion. Don't think it's fair to allude that people aren't backing the team...
It would take 8.5% of our Wembley turn out roughly to sell out Bristol City away.
If you are in a position where you can go, but you aren't, but you were one of the people demanding for a Wembley ticket, then I'll be blunt, you are in no position to talk. (If that doesn't apply to you or anyone reading this, then you shouldn't care)
My post obviously doesn't apply to people who can't go for valid reasons. Based on the demand for Wembley, first season back in the Champ, nice weather, Saturday 3pm kick off, and us spending a significant amount of money, the team should be backed.
As I always say, if this was Liverpool away or Man United, people would be asking for spares. It's just the truth.
And it’s the truth that people should just stop f*cking telling other people how to support their club.
People are offended because I want to see higher attendances and want people to attend games that they physically can. Amazing.
Be interesting if we draw a big Premier league team in the cup and all of a sudden people will be more willing to go.
Just to be clear one more time. I am not telling anyone how to support this club. I am saying it's disappointing to not see better support.
QPR tickets will be going
on sale in the coming days and we’ll have an allocation of around 1,800. That
thread will be an interesting read.

do they not give both tiers anymore?
i don't think so no. Full allocation seems to be 1,720 based on what they gave teams last season plus Preston at the weekend.
whats also interesting is that they sell away season tickets
Which is what we did in the Premier League days & something i suggested to the club before they introduced the loyalty point scheme before our previous promotion.
Bloody day trippers only showing up for the big matches! If only they would do it for a mid August game in Bristol for our first away day of the season! oh wait...
Still over 200 tickets left, and Bristol City haven't even given us a full allocation. They can hold over 4000.
Where do they sit the other 1500 away fans then? Looking at the map of the ground, they'd be completely separate.
Are you sure the initial 2500 wasn't for the middle tires and the other 1500 are for the tires on the side of them?
Never been to Ashton Gate before so I'm genuinely asking.
Yeah, that kind of proves my point that we will sell out as there is roughly 250 left.
Have you been on the ticketing site recently?
This is a genuine comment BTW, so please correct me if I'm wrong
If we could be expected to sell the 4k, we would have been given the tickets, lack of demand meant we got less I assume.
Plymouth took 3.4k last season. We will sell our or nearly sell out our initial allocation, had we sold out quicker, we would have got more tickets.
I am turning into a parrot now, but I find it disappointing after the season we just had and how good the team is, the demand isn't there. We should be fighting over these tickets imo, but hey ho
You do know Plymouth is a lot, lot nearer to Bristol right?
Should have sold out very quickly imo, surprised it didn't.

Our average away attendance was between 800-1000 in 23/24, Plymouth's was 1600 in their last league 1 season.
I’m assuming that @Braziliance wasn’t around in our PL seasons. Some of our turn outs then were shocking.
Would have been tough to manage when I was aged between 9-14 years old. I don't know many young teenagers that have the income and are allowed to travel to away games on their own.

Indeed it was, why Addicks go or don't to away matches is for a multitude of reasons as it is going to the Valley for matches. Lets just enjoy the opening away match at Ashton Gate & city of Bristol & supporting the Addicks loud and proud, COYA's

Plymouth are like a few clubs who have an exceptional away following given their location and how 'successful' they are.
Plymouth, Exeter(yes, true), Wednesday, Norwich, Ipswich, Portsmouth and Leeds. These are a few that have a terrific away following regardless of their division and position in the table.
Can't believe people continue to argue over away numbers. I couldn't give a shit if we sold 1500 or 2500. There are many different reasons why people do, or don't, go to away matches. To me you are no less of a fan if you dont. Same as ST holders. You are no less of a fan if you don't buy a ST.

Context...if their average attendance was 16k that's circa 94% of their capacity, much better than ours

What has that got to do with anything, they still have less bums on seats or similar currently. Plymouth are a smaller club, smaller catchment area, less succesful team but travel well no matter what.
I can already see the next excuse coming of there's more to do in London than Devon or that they have less competition or the trains aren't great or something.

Amazed how much this has triggered people. The best part is I wasn't even on a wind up, just pointing out that it would be nicer to see a bit more excitement after an amazing season.
More replies incoming but it won't change the fact we are looking like we have struggled to sell out our first Championship away day after people losing their minds on the Wembley tickets thread.
Also, cause you're evidently a bit of a plonker, I'll go a bit more in depth. A 9 year old that has parents or family are very different to a Charlton fan who has no relatives that support Charlton and no one willing to take them to a game, I would firmly fall into the category of 'wants to go but can't' which of whom none of my post is aimed at for those circumstances. If that's small then how small are we! We averaged 15k last season and around 18k when we were last in the championship, taking covid attendances out (bolstered by larger away followings).

2,500 Charlton fans is more than enough to create the noise to turn it into a home game

Tit.
The downside is that you may have to sit next to me, the upside is that im not Golfie 😀
What we are taking is still a very good turnout.
People may be reluctant to go in the home end, the locals get a bit excitable once they have a cider down their throat.
