POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Sheffield Wednesday: Saturday 18th October 2025: KO 15:00

Bottom of the table and a club in crisis, visitors Sheffield Wednesday come to the Valley looking for a bit of inspiration. Conversely, the Addicks must have smelled blood in the water, looking for a chance to claim all three points off the strugglers. The opening minutes were scrappy until Charlton’s industriousness proved too much.
On 16mins it was Sonny Carey who drew first blood for the home side. Tyreece Campbell, back from his globe-trotting adventures with the Jamaica national team, put Carey through into the box; his first shot was saved but the keeper spilled it back into his path. Carey slotted it past Horvath, the Wednesday keeper, to put Charlton into the lead.
On 30 mins Charlie Kelman was put through on the counter by Greg Docherty, but bearing down on the keeper his shot was blocked by the fighting defender. Moments later, Carey whipped in a delicious ball across the six yard line but no one was there to get on the end of it. Then, on 35 minutes, I caught Barry Bannon battling male pattern baldness and losing.
Just before the halftime whistle, the home side extended their lead through a sumptuous James Bree free kick, driven in hard and headed home by Reece Burke from six yards. It was a suitable way to cap off a solid first-half-performance that saw the Addicks in charge and cruising.
The second half saw the home side continue to harass and harry the Sheffield strugglers. But subs made on 61 minutes, with Miles Leaburn and Tanto Olaofe coming on for Charlie Kelman and Tyreece Campbell, gave the visitors space to find their stride.
On 68 minutes Sheffield Wednesday brought themselves back into the mix with a bit of decent play around the box that resulted in a shot that was parried back into the path of the Wednesday striker for a tap in that made the final twenty minutes or so much less enjoyable. Where we were comfortable and coasting for 70 minutes, the introduction of the subs changed the game in Wednesday’s favour.
In an attempt to wrestle control back Joe Rankin-Costello replaced James Bree on 89 minutes.
On 95 minutes Greg Docherty lofted a ball forward into the path of Tanto Olaofe who was wiped out—absolutely leveled—by Horvath on the edge of the box. The referee initially waved it off, possibly not able to process what he had just seen (or he’s a moron)! But, after consultation with the assistant ref closest to the calamitous assault, he awarded a free kick. Horvath was sent off and, with Wednesday having made all their substitutions, put one of their outfielders in goal.
It was a shame not to have kept a clean sheet, but the Addicks managed to hang on for another minute or so to claim their three points, moving the club up to ninth in the table.
Charlton 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1
Over to you.

Wrexham are so far down the table I'm getting a nosebleed21

I’m so glad we were able to nick that we have a very tough set of fixtures coming up november particular looks like it’s going to be a bloodbath so those 3 points will come in handy.15

That Sheffield Wednesday defence is the worse we’re going to play all the season the fact Kelman, Leaburn have struggled to make an impact yet again is concerning11

We're back at the Valley, and a ghostly shape can be seen flying through the South East of London
Wait its just Ethan Horveth, but wait... there is the sound of one gun... TWO guns
Do you know why... Because Sheffield Wednesday (and Tanto Olaofe it seems)... YOU'VE... BEEN SUNK!!41 -
Yeah, we made an absolute pig's ear of that. Might need to rethink our substitutions cos until then we were in no bother for the 3rd game running16

Enjoy league 1 Barry! #Karma35

At the end of the day a wins a win, and 15 points from the first 10 games is a very decent return.

Above Ipswich, albeit played one more3

How does the ref ?1. Not send the keeper off straight away? Think it was the Lino that told him.2. Gives the free kick on the D and the wall is a yard away from the penalty spot?23

Win's a win but feels a bit flat after that3

Decent showing. Played well first half but went uncharacteristically passive in the second and let them back in.
How the ref missed the Knibbs trip was shocking...but to not initially giving the foul for Tanto getting cleaned out is abysmal.

Not great in the 2nd half. But 3 points and 9th place in the Championship…for context, a year ago we drew 1-1 with 10 man Stockport. Ramani Edmonds-Green with our goal…..

Ref was poor…some of the challenges he let Wendy get away with was dreadful16

Come on this is us it was never going to be easy lol 3 points in the bag nothing else matters13

Talk about make hard work of it.
At half time, I could only see a 3 or 4-0 win. The Sheff Wed defence was hopeless and we were pretty comfortable.
Yet for most of the second half we were second best and Wednesday probably deserved an equaliser .
Why on earth did we drop so deep and just invite pressure on to us. Very strange.
Shout out to Carey for a barn storming performance in the first half and to Bree for some delicious crosses , particularly in the first half.
And a huge boo to the referee. How on earth didn't he see that appalling challenge from the Wednesday keeper on Olaofe at the end. Olaofe is a lucky man to walk away from that unhurt. They should throw the book at the keeper for that.18 -

Was in control ,but yet again like derby and preston away poor second half . And please stop with the kelman tc love affair it clearly dosent work 10 games 0 goals between them8

Enjoyed the first half.
Loved the support/singing/atmosphere.
Second half utterly ruined by the incompetent referee who truly spoiled the match.
3 points and we're doing as well as I'd hoped.
A great season so far with the tantalising prospect of a nudge towards the play offs.
Why not?1 -
In this league sometimes you need to win ugly. We really feel like a mid table club which is absolutely is fine with me. Carey has been the surprise of the season.25

Win's a win. Sheff Weds were poor but a really sub par second half let them back in it. All the front 4 players doing something right when they're on, just none of them scoring.5

Important win.3

Was at the game and we got away with it there.
How many more times are we going to start with Kelman and Campbell, they do not compliment one another at all.
Start Kelman with Tanto and bring on Leaburn and Campbell later as they showed they could play together last season.
Other than that I thought the ref was a total disgrace and I try not to slag of refs but he was useless.
Can't stand Bannan or Wednesday so I'll be more than happy to see them in league one for the foreseeable.
On to Tuesday and hopefully get a result

That was not a good performance today. Even when we were 2-0 up at HT I felt uncomfortable as we really hadn’t been playing well. Two good goals, yes, but we had been sloppy and were losing possession a lot. So it didn’t surprise me when they pulled one back in the 2nd and I remarked to my mate that I thought we would go on and lose that. But, we hung on.It wasn’t pretty today and we didn’t play well but 3 points is 3 points and I’ll take it. Nathan Jones will not be happy with that performance though. Unlike, really, how we’ve been so far this season.3

Easy. Needed that win to get an important 3 points and keep Wednesday below us where they belong. Going into this game Weds had lost to Coventry, but before that they’d drawn with Birmingham, drawn with QPR and beaten Pompey so they weren’t exactly in free fall. Doesn’t matter how you win as long as you do20

A very useful 3 points but we made such hard work of it. Cruising at half time, the 2nd half was terrible from us until Weds scored then we stepped it back up and managed the last 20 minutes or so quite well. Shout out to the ref, give it up mate, you were truely one of the worst refs to grace our pitch for a long time and we've had some right cockwombles over the years. Countless free kicks given against us every time a Weds player fell over, general game mangement was awful and he saved the best until last, to wave play on after that assault on Olaofe was disgraceful, he didnt have a clue until the lino stepped in. All in all, a harder fought 3 points than needed to be. 15 points after 10 games, not too shabby at all. UTA5

It was very easy for Charlton, first half and second we wasted some good final ball to open them up. Wednesday are showing what they are, struggling off and on the pitch. Our substitutions, were made with one eye on our next few games, and we conceded when our forwards were replaced, which as loOkOut states allowed Wednesday more freedom. I hope Wednesday survive but the winding up order is worrying, also to get three points in this league takes some effort and I wouldn't want to lose these three.2
