Mbick is just the joys of Modern Football... Sometimes little point in bothering with an Academy because the really good kids you produce won't be around for long - Along with the younger kids that have moved to Premier League sides of late, whats that... Seven kids we've lost recently?
Either way, no point getting upset about it... Its too common now, and not restricted to us
Little point bothering with an academy that potentially is about to net us a few million with Mbick and Lookman? If it helps us move forward and is reinvested, long may it continue IMO!

Seems slightly odd to allow Mbick to go so late in the window if he does. I get that Brighton might not have offered the right amount up to now but if we don't have time to use the money we get to help improve the team now then what's the harm in keeping him until the summer and possibly pushing up his value even more and getting other teams interested? It could be that the club has transfers lined up and ready to go if Mbick's sale goes through but I really doubt it with less than three hours to go in the window. Seems strange, unhelpful timing.

Even if the owners did get us Cat 1 it doesn't really stop the poaching by the top clubs. Just means you get a bit more money.

Mind you we're STILL getting money for Lookman, with all his European moves, and he wasn't with us that long either.

You add the Lookman windfall to the Mbick money and see why Jones mentioned bringing forward some summer recruitment if possible.
Nyoni on loan wouldn't be summer recruitment, so it would be one signing in Sichenje, which possibly doesn't even need the Mbick money to be funded.

Let's try and keep the Mbick stuff to the Mbick thread now please. Leave this for rumours...or at least try.

Agreed. I guess getting to Category 1 at least would soften the blow of losing so many of the academy early.

I reckon it'll be a shit sandwich later Collins in - Mbick gone - Nyoni in late on. Personally think anything over 5m is a great fee for Mbick at this stage in his development. Looks good at Col U but I didn't think much of him in the glimpses I've seen (shows what i know.)
    5m is a fantasy
Awful business by us if it isn't 5M+

I agree with that, but we don't know what options the club have been looking at in recent days. If there is a good deal to be done I'm sure they will/would have... if not keep it in the bank for the summer.

Oh dont worry, I'm not naive to disregard the benefits of having an Academy
The proper way to progress as a Football club is to produce talent, and sell them on for profit, rather than the Wrexham model
Its just frustrating thats how the game works now and am just having a whinge. You produce your kids, and you can barely take advantage of their talent - Of course for every Mbick there is a Pat Casey, both of whom came through the U18s together, and the latter will probably never make it to this level, or an even better example; Toby Bower etc. so there will be less "concern" about him.

I feel like when our attempted deals go to the wire we almost never manage to pull them off. The only one I remember us actually managing to eventually get approved was Hemed, and I think we all would have been better off if we hadn't. On the plus side I think one of the last minute dashes we missed out on was Bonne
I remember Jaiyesimi signing really late in the night
Was it Sam Lavelle who had his welcome photos taken using Olly Groome's headlights to illuminate him?

Why are people talking about the Lookman money as if it's a huge amount? It's less than we paid for Knibbs

Not when we already know the level of money we have rejected twice. It seems the next logical number that the board would accept.
Sorry, but you don't know that it was the fee in itself that was rejected, it may well have been the add-ons that were either not there or were not to Charlton's liking. If Brighton sign him and he turns out to be everything they and we thought he would, his next move would impact on Brighton's return for the player, we on the other hand want to ensure a place at the table if and when he does move.

I think we will all be disappointed if Mbick leaves as whatever Brighton offer it won't be as much as if he made it with us jn the championship for a couple of seasons. And we wont get to see him deliver close to his potential in a charlton shirt.

I'll be disappointed with less than £5m up front, large payments for any games he makes the brighton first team and a 20% sell on.

Bet that if we find out, we get substantially less

And i don't think £10m cash up front would be unreasonable either

Pitfalls of spending so long as a League One club, we're just not used to the figures being thrown around

Disappointing if Mbick goes unless the fee is truly astronomical

No one has mentioned it being big money?

It's an unexpected windfall, which we otherwise wouldn't have been getting. Say it covers the loan fee for Nyoni - then it's well timed and helpful.

Selling Mbick now is so short sighted, he only needs to have a decent spell in the Championship with us next season and his price is more than double what is it now.
Very true.  But if he has a shit season next year, his value will be less than half
